Role Of Ghrelin Receptor In Sarcopenia: Involvement Of Redox Signaling And Rankl., Mariam A. Othman, Joo Hyun Kim, Khaled Moustfa, John Lawler

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Sarcopenia is aging-induced debilitating loss of skeletal muscle strength and function. Evidence from aging research suggests an integration of disrupted mechanotransduction and oxidative stress elevation that leads to muscle atrophy. Ghrelin is a 28 amino acid peptide hormone circulating in both acylated (AG) and unacylated (UAG) forms that acts as a nutrient sensor and metabolic regulator. Acylated ghrelin then binds to the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R) or the “ghrelin receptor.” Emerging evidence indicates that GHS-R knockout may hold greater promise in protecting against sarcopenia and fasting-induced atrophy (Wu 2020, Sun 2020). Furthermore, ghrelin can promote the elevation of nNOS, …

Injury Risk And Location Comparison Of Full-Time Swat Operators And Part-Time Swat Operators, Kaylee Fredella

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams deal with high-risk situations with unpredictable movement patterns that put them at a risk for injuries. SWAT teams fall into two distinct categories full-time (FT) and part-time (PT). FT SWAT teams are in big cities, and they are SWAT operators their whole shift. While PT teams are in smaller cities or more rural counties, and they spend half their time as SWAT operators and the other as patrol officers. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine differences in pain and injury locations and average length of injury time between PT and FT …

Effects Of Inducing Post Activation Potentiation On Leg Extensors Using Isotonic Movements, Samuel Ramirez, Dakota Harris, Calvin D. Smith, Kase Pennartz, Micheal Luera Feb 2023

Effects Of Inducing Post Activation Potentiation On Leg Extensors Using Isotonic Movements, Samuel Ramirez, Dakota Harris, Calvin D. Smith, Kase Pennartz, Micheal Luera

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Post Activation Potentiation (PAP) has been documented in previous studies as evoking greater muscle activation and velocities in submaximal contractions. Literature has additionally shown that isotonic contractions have increased motor unit activation when compared to isokinetic. PURPOSE: Induce PAP using different interventions and evaluate PAP differences between interventions in the vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis (VM) and evaluate velocity and muscle activation differences. METHODS: 8 recreationally active males (n=8, age = 20.6 ± 1.8, height = 178.2 ± 12.1 cm, weight = 83.2 ± 48.3 kg) with no previous lower extremity injuries completed this study. …

Implementing Stroke Impact Scale As An Indicator Of Stroke Survivor Recovery, Adam Avalos Feb 2023

Implementing Stroke Impact Scale As An Indicator Of Stroke Survivor Recovery, Adam Avalos

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Rehabilitation testing efforts for stroke survivors (SS) have either been generalized or restricted to the physical domain. Conventional testing lacks the capability to accurately identify a wide range of resulting morbidities. PURPOSE: Rehabilitation efforts for stroke survivors (SS) has been generalized and are not specific to the wide range of resulting disabilities. Use of the Stroke impairment Scale (SIS) provides categorical insight into the impact of stroke on individuals. The purpose of the present study was to identify specific categories of impairments in order to develop optimal rehabilitation strategies for each individual. METHODS: Subjects were asked to self-evaluate their recovery …

Comparative Effects Of Advanced Footwear Technology On Running Economy In Track Spikes And Racing Shoes, Garrett M. Oehlert

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Advanced footwear technology, such as highly-cushioned midsoles with carbon-fiber plates, has been shown to improve running economy (RE) in road racing shoes. More recently, similar features have been incorporated into track spikes; however, the impact of advanced spikes on RE has yet to be quantified. Furthermore, there has been no comparison of advanced spikes to advanced shoes. PURPOSE: Quantify the RE benefit of advanced track spikes compared to a control spike and determine whether RE is optimized more in an advanced racing shoe or an advanced track spike. METHODS: Four racing shoes (3 advanced, 1 control) and 3 …
