Several diseases that become catastrophic at the household level include end-stage renal disease, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, thalassemia, and hemophilia. Patients with these diseases benefit significantly from the National Health Insurance (JKN), and these conditions absorb high claim costs from JKN. Special attention is needed to manage these diseases effectively. Disparities in healthcare facilities, specialists, and variations in Case Mix Group (CMG) payment are suspected to be important contributing factors to the variation in JKN fund absorption across provinces. This study uses 2014 claim data from BPJS Kesehatan in Jakarta and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) provinces to explore the extent of …

Few investigations have examined the total burden of disease attributable to lower levels of income in a single number that accounts for morbidity and mortality.

Methods: We ascertained respondents’ health-related quality of life (HRQOL) scores and mortality status from the 2003 to 2004, 2005 to 2006, 2007 to 2008 and 2009 to 2010 cohorts of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) with mortality follow-up through 31 December 2011. A mapping algorithm based on respondents’ age and answers …

Decreasing Cost Associated Medication Nonadherence, Shawn E. Raymond Nov 2016

Decreasing Cost Associated Medication Nonadherence, Shawn E. Raymond

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

An Abstract of the Scholarly Project by

Shawn E. Raymond

Medication cost is a major contributor for patient medication nonadherence. Take in the fact that a large population lives in poverty, many cannot afford to pay the retail prices associated with purchasing their medications. By incorporating wholesale medications into a charitable health clinic, the reduced cost of medications for treatment of both acute and chronic illnesses could be passed on to those in need thereby decreasing cost associated medication nonadherence. Nurse Practitioners in the state of Kansas are not afforded the privilege to purchase, repackage and distribute or resell wholesale …

CBER Infographic Posters

What is health? How do we measure the health of a society? Is it merely the clinical outputs of each individual patient or are these numbers impacted by environmental and social factors such as access to healthcare facilities? The answer is yes. Research surrounding health and social services shows a correlation between health outcomes and the environment, calling this junction the Social Determinants of Health (Bradley, et al., 2011; Bradley, et al., 2016; Woolf, et al., 2015). This includes a combination of factors that impact the health of an individual such as: access to food, income, education, physical activity, and …

Lymphatic filariasis afflicts 68 million people in 73 countries, including 17 million persons living with chronic lymphedema. The Global Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis aims to stop new infections and to provide care for persons already affected, but morbidity management programs have been initiated in only 24 endemic countries. We examine the economic costs and benefits of alleviating chronic lymphedema and its effects through a simple limb-care program. For Khurda District, Odisha State, India, we estimated lifetime medical costs and earnings losses due to chronic lymphedema and acute dermatolymphangioadenitis (ADLA) with and without a community-based limb-care program. The program would …

Essays On Health And Labor Market Practices In The U.S., Mona Khadem Sameni Aug 2016

Essays On Health And Labor Market Practices In The U.S., Mona Khadem Sameni

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the link between different aspects of labor market and individuals’ health. The first chapter analyzes the relationship between the use of four different substances and nonstandard work schedules. Using the NLSY97 and applying standard panel techniques as well as survival analyses, I find that contrary to most previous evidence, nonstandard work schedule is not necessarily associated with an increase in substance use, and in the case of drinking and binge drinking such correlation is actually negative. Evidence also suggests that drug prone individuals tend to work more at nonstandard schedules. Results are robust to the specification at …

Three Essays On Informal Payments In The Health Care Sector In Russia, Alexandra Polovinka Aug 2016

Three Essays On Informal Payments In The Health Care Sector In Russia, Alexandra Polovinka

Dissertations

Health care is one of the most corrupt sectors in Russia. In 2015 twenty percent of patients paid a bribe for the health care services once or twice, and thirteen percent more than twice (Russian Public Opinion Research Center, 2015). Using data on adults from over 5,000 households in Russia, this three-essay study analyzes out-of-pocket formal (official) and informal (unofficial, bribes) payments for the health care.

In the first essay, I study whether there is a difference in the amount of unofficial pay-ments across five types of health care services (ambulance, inpatient, outpatient, dental, and medical checkups) and two types …

Have You Counted The Ingredients On Your Child's Lunch Tray?: An Economic Analysis Of Sustainability Initiatives Within The School Lunch Program, Vanessa R. Scalora Jul 2016

Have You Counted The Ingredients On Your Child's Lunch Tray?: An Economic Analysis Of Sustainability Initiatives Within The School Lunch Program, Vanessa R. Scalora

Business and Economics Summer Fellows

In 2010, President Obama signed the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act, establishing a monetary incentive for schools that served meals following a more rigorous nutritional requirement than standard guidelines. This act is a step in the right direction towards placing more importance on school lunches, however America’s lunchroom practices continue to be environmentally unsustainable, and students absorb this message. The production and transportation of processed cafeteria food contributes to climate change, its packaging is polluting, and its consumption contributes to obesity. The use of premade foods and sales from vending machines increase as lunch times grow ever shorter. In addition, …

The Financial Dialogue In The Development Of Medical Treatment Plans, Christopher D. Busack, Ms3, Bethany Fox, Ms3 Jul 2016

The Financial Dialogue In The Development Of Medical Treatment Plans, Christopher D. Busack, Ms3, Bethany Fox, Ms3

The Medicine Forum

As patients face increasingly high out-of-pocket costs and difficulties navigating the healthcare system, failing to discuss available treatment options in financial terms can lead to grave consequences for patients. Medical bills are responsible for the majority of bankruptcies in the United States. Given the severe financial implications of medical bills, it is imperative that patients become more involved in discussions of their treatment plans and become aware of the costs of their decisions up front. Counseling about costs ensures that physicians avoid placing a debilitating financial burden on patients and maintain adherence to the ethical principle of non-maleficence. Various studies …

The Effect Of Maternal Employment On Child Obesity, Bezawit T. Agiro

International Journal of African Development

Abstract

Obesity has been a major concern for the United States and most other industrialized countries over the past few decades. More than one third of children and adolescents in the United States are obese or overweight. Child obesity is of particular interest because overweight children are more likely to be overweight as adults, and such adults are exposed to various diseases. During the same period that witnessed an increase in child obesity, an important change that occurred was the increase in maternal employment. This study is an attempt to analyze the relationship between maternal employment and child obesity. This …

International Trade Effects Of Regional Economic Integration In Africa: The Case Of The Southern African Development Community (Sadc), Mengesha Yayo, Sisay Asefa

International Journal of African Development

Empirical studies on regional economic integration process in Africa exhibit sluggish progress, and there by limited level of intra-trade. The existing literature in Africa, particularly in the Southern African regional integration bloc, has neglected the effects of regional economic integration dealing with disaggregated data. This study analyzes trade creation and diversion effects of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) using disaggregated data. The investigation estimates an augmented gravity model using panel data and random effect estimator methods applying instrumental variables where needed.

The results show that intra-SADC trade is growing in the fuel and minerals and the heavy manufacturing sectors …

Using The Theory Of Fundamental Causes To Show The Potential Effects Of Socioeconomic Status On Surgical Outcomes, Mehwish Qasim, A.B.D.

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Surgical procedures are both costly and common. There are large differences in surgical outcomes both within and between hospitals based on patient characteristics such as measures of income. In both 2000 and 2009, patients residing in low-income communities had worse morbidity and mortality rates, across a wide range of quality indicators. In this review, the author will explicate the Theory of Fundamental Causes as it relates to surgical care, review key empirical findings and address potential limitations of the theory. This review will provide a platform for researchers to discuss current research in surgical disparities using the Theory of Fundamental …

Inequitable Chronic Lead Exposure: A Dual Legacy Of Social And Environmental Injustice, Tamara Leech, Elizabeth A. Adams, Tess D. Weathers, Lisa K. Staten, Gabriel M. Filippelli Jul 2016

Inequitable Chronic Lead Exposure: A Dual Legacy Of Social And Environmental Injustice, Tamara Leech, Elizabeth A. Adams, Tess D. Weathers, Lisa K. Staten, Gabriel M. Filippelli

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Both historic and contemporary factors contribute to the current unequal distribution of lead in urban environments and the disproportionate impact lead exposure has on the health and well-being of low-income minority communities. We consider the enduring impact of lead through the lens of environmental justice, taking into account well-documented geographic concentrations of lead, legacy sources that produce chronic exposures, and intergenerational transfers of risk. We discuss the most promising type of public health action to address inequitable lead exposure and uptake: primordial prevention efforts that address the most fundamental causes of diseases by intervening in structural and systemic inequalities.

Predictive Models Of Health Expenditure Via Regularization: Do Low And Upper Middle Income Economies Share Common Predictors?, Faustine Williams, Emmanuel Thompson

Faustine Williams

Countries around the world are presently confronted with gargantuan health care challenges and huge variability in health spending. In the literature, income has been recognized as a crucial predictor of health expenditure. However, there is no agreement on which other variables may be connected to the remaining largely unexplained variation in health expenditure. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the link between health expenditure and some important predictors among low-income and lower middle-income economies. Regularized regression methods including the Lasso and the Elastic net, and the 2013 World Bank data were used to identify key predictors …

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a condition that is increasing in incidence in Indonesia, consuming a lot of National Health Insurance (JKN) public funds. In the JKN program, hemodialysis (HD) for treating CKD is guaranteed but requires a balance between costs and outcomes. Since 2014, BPJS has covered almost all HD costs in Indonesia with different Casemix Base Group (CBG) rates according to hospital class.

Terapi Sistemik Defisit Jkn: Bahan Refleksi Bagi Semua Pihak, Budi Hidayat Jun 2016

Terapi Sistemik Defisit Jkn: Bahan Refleksi Bagi Semua Pihak, Budi Hidayat

Jurnal Ekonomi Kesehatan Indonesia

The deficit deserves to be considered a chronic JKN disease. Indications of the deficit are revealed from the claims ratio figures. In 2014 and 2015, the claims ratio was consistently above 100%. This figure results from dividing claim costs (or participant health costs) by contribution income. Thus, the claims ratio describes the absorption of contribution funds for health costs only. However, contribution income must also be allocated for operational expenses and reserves. The JKN deficit will continue to grow if systemic therapy is nil. For 2016, the author's estimation results by referring to the assumed contribution amounts by Presidential Regulation …

It has become a common issue that the Global Fund (GF) as one of the largest international donors to AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Program will immediately stop the funding. Data shows that in 2009 GF ATM support reached 88,8% while APBN funding just cover 11,2% of the total budget needed. However, APBN budget for ATM programs was significantly increased in 2012 which covered almost 30% of the total budget. Eventhough the increasing trend of ATM budget seemed at the central government level, how ever the local governments will hold the key to the sustainability of the post- termination GF ATM …

Research On Problem Gambling Websites, Chang Boon Patrick Lee Jun 2016

Research On Problem Gambling Websites, Chang Boon Patrick Lee

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

This is a continuation of a series of studies on problem gambling websites. It has been noted in prior studies that one avenue problem gamblers might look for help was to go online to perform a web search. Online help is practical as help can be located immediately and this can help to ease the gamblers’ concerns that they are left alone to handle their own problems. While there are some anecdotal evidences regarding the success of problem gambling websites, there have been few empirical studies that relate directly to the perceptions and usefulness of the websites for the problem …
