Purpose: To compare the in-vitro shear bond strengths of a new paste-paste formulation of resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (Rm-GIC) to an exising powder-liquid formulation. The study will test the hypothesis that the new paste-paste formulation of Rm-GIC (Fuji-Cem ™, GC Corp, Tokyo, Japan) has the same bond strength as an existing popular powder-liquid formulation of Rm-GIC (Rely-X ™ Luting Cement, 3M, St. Paul, MN)Materials and Methods: A total of 33 human molars were sectioned parallel to the occlusal surface to expose mid-coronal dentin and mounted parallel to the bond shearing device on the universal testing machine (Instron). Increased Receptor-Mediated Gene Delivery To The Liver By Protamine-Enhanced-Asialofetuin-Lipoplexes, M. A. Arangoa, Nejat Düzgüneş, C. Tros De Ilarduya

A novel lipidic vector composed of DOTAP/Chol liposomes, asialofetuin (AF), protamine sulfate and DNA has been developed. The resulting protamine-AF-lipoplexes improved significantly the levels of gene expression in cultured cells and in the liver upon i.v. administration. Lipoplexes containing the optimal amount of AF (1 μg/μg DNA) showed a 16-fold higher transfection activity in HepG2 cells than non-targeted (plain) complexes. The uptake by cells having asialoglycoprotein receptors (ASGPr) on their plasma membrane was decreased by the addition of free AF, indicating that AF-lipoplexes were taken up specifically by cells via ASGPr-mediated endocytosis. This study determined if any of six endodontic solutions would have a softening effect on resorcinol-formalin paste in extracted teeth, and if there were any differences in the solvent action between these solutions. Forty-nine single-rooted extracted teeth were decoronated two mm coronal to the CEJ, and the roots sectioned apically to a standard length of 15 mm. Canals were prepared to a 12mm WL and a uniform size with a #7 Parapost drill. Teeth were then mounted in a cylinder ring with acrylic. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to report the distribution of procedures provided to Virginia Medicaid children by three types of dental providers in rural and urban areas. Methods: Medicaid claims filed for dental patients younger than 21 were obtained and analyzed for fiscal years 1994 and 1995. Dental providers were categorized according to their practice type: general practice (GP), pediatric (PD) and public health (PH) dentists. Each type of practice was categorized as practicing in a Metropolitan, Urban, Rural or Completely Rural location and evaluated for percentages of preventive, diagnostic, and corrective services provided.Results: The number of procedures …

Purpose: This study analyzed the percentage of Virginia practitioners utilizing vacuum form machines, types of appliances recommended, and types of patient information provided.Methods: Questionnaires were constructed and mailed to 2500 dentists.Results: 80% of dentists utilized vacuum form machines, 42.5% recommended mouthguards, 60.2% recommended home bleaching trays, 37.6% provided patient information on mouthguards, 37.1% provided patient information on home bleaching trays, 16.5% inquired on patient questionnaires about mouthguard protection during contact sports,and 17.3% inquired on patient questionnaires about tooth color satisfaction.Conclusions: Dentists use vacuum form machines for home bleaching trays more than mouthguards. General dentists and pediatric dentists provide patient information …

The purpose of this study was to determine whether chlorhexidine gluconate (0.12%), used as an endodontic irrigating solution would affect the apical seal of three root canal cements. One hundred extracted human single-canal teeth were divided into 9 experimental groups of 10 teeth each, in addition to a positive and negative control group of 5 teeth each. The teeth were decoronated at the level of the cementoenamel junction, accessed, instrumented to a Master Apical File #50, irrigated with either sterile saline, 5.25% NaOCl or 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate, and dried using paper points. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of sagittal mandibular position on preferred lip position in profile. Five androgynous silhouette profiles differing only in the degree of mandibular retro- or prognathism (-25º, -18º, -11º, -4º, & +3º facial contour angles) were created. Using a computer animation program, evaluators moved the lips independently into the position deemed to be the most esthetic for each profile. Evaluators included adolescent orthodontic patients, parents of patients, and orthodontists. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of prophylactic near-infrared light therapy from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in pediatric bone marrow transplant (BMT) recipients.
Background Data: Oral mucositis (OM) is a frequent side effect of chemotherapy that leads to increased morbidity. Near-infrared light has been shown to produce biostimulatory effects in tissues, and previous results using near-infrared lasers have shown improvement in OM indices. However, LEDs may hold greater potential for clinical applications.

This study evaluated bone density in designated implants sites using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and compared the measurements to those of quantitative computed tomography (QCT) and subjective bone density evaluation. Sixty-two designated implant sites in 9 human cadavers jaws were used. Indicator rods, 2 mm in diameter, were placed in all sites. CT images representing 1 mm bucco-lingual slices immediately mesial and distal to the rods were selected for density evaluations. Distraction osteogenesis (DO) is the gradual lengthening of a healing bone. This surgical technique can be applied to the jawbone to correct an asymmetry or deficiency of the mandible. DO has been added to the list of treatment options for patients with craniofacial anomalies or excessive dental crowding.

Purpose. The purpose of this case-control study was to determine whether long-term ultrasonic noise exposure via the dental office environment is related to dental hygienists' hearing status.
Methods. Registered dental hygienists (N - 698) who live in the Hampon Roads areas of Virginia were mailed a Dental Hygiene Word History Questionnaire to determine who would meet the inclusion criteria and would be willing to participate in the study. Consenting subjects were categorized into one of two groups, according to ultrasonic sealer usage rate, and matched on age. The initial purpose of the study was to determine if a difference existed between nosocomial pneumonia rates for intubated patients who received twice daily oral hygiene care with 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate and those who received the standard oral care while in the critical care unit (CCU). Over seven months (February - August), participants were identified through screening and consent procedures, and randomized into one of two groups. Over the seven months, only five subjects were enrolled. วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาว่าที่ระดับค่าความเป็นกรด-ด่างและระยะเวลาเท่าใดของแคลเซียมไฮดรอกไซด์จึงจะ สามารถฆ่าเชื้อ 4 ตัวได้ วัสดุและวิธีการ เตรียมแคลเซียมไฮดรอกไซด์ผสมกับน้ํากลั่นให้ได้ระดับค่าความเป็นกรด-ด่าง 12.5, 12.0, 11.5, 10.5, 9.5, 8.5 และ 7.5 ใส่ลงไปในหลอดที่เตรียมเชื้อทั้ง 4 ตัวคือ เชื้อเอนเทอโรคอคคัส ฟิคัลลิส, เชื้อ แอคติโนมัยชีส วิสโคซุส, เชื้อสแตฟฟีโลคอคคัส ออเรียสและเชื้อสเตรปโตคอคคัส มิวแทนส์ ที่มีความเจือจาง เท่ากับแมคฟาแลนด์นัมเบอร์ 1 ตั้งทิ้งไว้ที่อุณหภูมิห้อง เมื่อครบ 10 นาที, 30 นาที, 1 ช.ม., 6 ซ.ม., 24 ซ.ม., 48 ซ.ม. และ 72 ซ.ม. นําสารในหลอด ใส่ในอาหารเลี้ยงเชื้อ 2 หลอดทุก ๆ ระดับค่าความเป็นกรด-ด่าง โดยมี น้ําเกลือเป็นตัวควบคุม นําอาหารเลี้ยงเชื้อเข้าตู้อบ 37°C เป็นเวลา 48 ช.ม. แล้วอ่านผลโดยดูจากความขุ่น ถ้าขุ่น แสดงว่ามีการเจริญของเชื้อ ทําซ้ํา 3 ครั้ง ตอนที่ 2 เตรียมแคลเซียมไฮดรอกไซด์ให้ได้ค่าความเป็นกรด-ด่าง เหมือนในตอนแรก นําเชื้อที่เจือจางแล้ว ใส่ลงไปในสารที่เตรียมไว้ อ่านค่าความเป็นกรด-ด่างตามเวลาที่เปลี่ยน ไปเหมือนตอนแรก ทําการทดลองซ้ํา 3 ครั้งนํามาหาค่าเฉลี่ย ผลการศึกษา เชื้อทั้ง 4 ตัวสามารถถูกทําลายโดยแคลเซียมไฮดรอกไซด์ที่ระดับค่าความเป็นกรด-ด่าง 12.5 โดย ค่าเฉลี่ยการลดลงของความเป็นกรด-ด่างเริ่มต้นที่ 12.5 มีความแตกต่างจากกลุ่มอื่นอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (Repeated-Measures ANOVA ที่ p0.00) ส่วนค่าความเป็นกรด-ด่างที่ต่ํากว่า 10 ไม่สามารถทําลายเชื้อตัวใดได้เลย โดยใช้เวลาในการสัมผัสกับแคลเซียมไฮดรอกไซด์แตกต่างกัน เชื้อสเตรปโตคอคคัส มิวแทนส์ ใช้เวลา 30 นาที เชื้อแอคติโนมัยชีส วิสโคซุส …

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิภาพของสารที่ใช้ดึงเกลือแร่ 3 ชนิด คือ เอทิลีน ไตเอมีน เตตรา อะซิติก แอซิด (อีดีทีเอ) กรดฟอร์มิก และกรดไนตริกฟอร์มาลีน โดยพิจารณาจากระยะเวลาที่ใช้ ราคา วิธีการเตรียมสาร และการสูญเสียของเนื้อเยื่อ วัสดุและวิธีการ ใช้ฟันกรามใหญ่ที่สาม จํานวน 12 ซี่ แบ่งเป็น 3 กลุ่ม กลุ่มที่ 1 ดึงเกลือแร่โดยใช้อีดีทีเอ กลุ่ม ที่ 2 ใช้กรดฟอร์มิก และกลุ่มที่ 3 ใช้กรดไนตริกฟอร์มาลีน เปรียบเทียบระยะเวลาที่ใช้ดึงเกลือแร่จนสมบูรณ์ซึ่ง ตรวจสอบโดยวิธีการใช้สารเคมี เปรียบเทียบราคาของสารแต่ละชนิดและศึกษาการเปลี่ยนแปลงของเนื้อเยื่อฟัน หลังจากถูกดึงเกลือแร่ ผลการศึกษา กรดไนตริก ฟอร์มาลีนดึงเกลือแร่จากฟันได้เร็วที่สุดคือ 102.0 ชั่วโมง รองลงมาคือ กรดฟอร์มิก 148.5 ชั่วโมง และ อีดีทีเอ 696.8 ชั่วโมง การเปรียบเทียบราคาต่อขบวนการ คือ อีดีทีเอ 395.43 บาท กรดฟอร์มิก 89.10-148.50 บาท และกรดไนตริกฟอร์มาลีน 21.17-30.26 บาท กรดไนตริกฟอร์มาลีนเป็นสารเพียงชนิดเดียว ที่ทําให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนสีและเกิดการสูญเสียเนื้อเยื่อฟัน สรุป กรดไนตริกฟอร์มาลีนใช้เวลาน้อยที่สุดในการดึงเกลือแร่และมีราคาถูกที่สุดแต่มีข้อเสีย คือ อาจทําให้มีการ สูญเสียเนื้อเยื่อฟัน กรดฟอร์มิกซึ่งใช้เวลามากกว่า และมีราคาสูงกว่า เหมาะสมในการใช้งานด้านบริการ เนื่องจาก ไม่ทําให้เกิดการสูญเสียเนื้อเยื่อ แต่อีดีทีเอไม่เหมาะในการใช้งานด้านบริการเพราะใช้เวลานานมากและมีราคาสูง
