Hemorrhage, or the discharge of blood from a ruptured blood vessel during life, constitutes one of the normal results of every operation of tooth extraction. In the majority of cases its control is simple, as it ceases within a short time and need be no cause for alarm. In exceptional cases, however, the discharge may be prolonged and excessive and cause, not only great anxiety to the dentist, but also much mental stress and a condition of extreme physical exhaustion to the patient. The gold inlay restoration has been used in dentistry for many years, the first ones being m~de by making a matrix of platinum or gold of about thirty-six to forty gauge in thickness, and then melting pure gold or solder of gold into the matrix. Up to the year 1860 surgery and sepsis were practically synonymous. Surgical procedures, accomplished as they were without the use of antiseptics, could not, of necessity, be done with the greatest of care, for the time element was the chief factor in success. In consequence, infections and diseases, as for example, pyemia, septicemia, erysipelas and hospital gangrene were the rule rather than the exception. This peculiarity is characterized by white, brown, and corn-colored opaque areas of enamel surrounded by apparently normal enamel. The greatest reason for using an anesthetic is to reduce pain for the patient. If we can do an operation without pain we are doing a great beneficial service to humanity. Hippocrates says "Divinum est opus sedan dolarum," meaning Divine is the work to subdue pain. In some cases it is best not to give an anesthetic as in case of cavity preparation which is very near the pulp. The pulp may be permanently injured by ever instrumentation.
