Doctor Cushing, of Chicago, was elected eleventh president of the Association at the 1871 meeting at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. As chairman of the Committee on Dental Literature, he delivered an extensive report, citing the recent "marked improvement" in dental journals. Doctor Cushing was one of the founders, and twice president, of the Illinois State Dental Society. He also served as president of the Chicago Dental Society and the Chicago Odontological Society. He was recording secretary of the American Dental Association from 1878 to 1883 and from 1885 until his death in 1900. Doctor Cushing was born in Providence, …

The Association had the following standing committees and councils: Judicial, Dental Education, Dental Legislation, Dental Health Education, Relief, Dental Relief Fund, Research, Process Patent, Dental Index, Membership, representatives on National Board of Dental Examiners, Insurance, Economics, Dental Therapeutics, Public Health, American Red Cross, History and Dental Museum. Doctor Robinson was president of the California State Dental Association in 1930 and the National Association of Dental Examiners in 1935. Doctor Taft, of Cincinnati, was elected eighth president of the Association at the 1868 meeting at Niagara Falls. He had served as recording secretary since the preliminary meeting in 1859. Doctor Taft was professor of operative dentistry and dental hygiene at the Ohio College of Dental Surgery and later held a similar position at the University of Michigan. He was author of a textbook, A Practical Treatise on Operative Dentistry. Doctor Taft compiled an index of dental periodical literature, and for several years he was editor of the journal, The Dental Register. He was extremely active in dental organizations. He …

Doctor Deines, of Seattle, became the one-hundred-andseventh-president of the Association at the 1970 meeting in Las Vegas. The House of Delegates adopted a statement on the "25th Anniversary of Fluoridation," saying "The American Dental Association urges state legislatures and public officials and agencies involved in health planning or care programs to give the highest priority to implementing fluoridation without further delay." Doctor Brown, of Columbus, Ohio, was elected fifty-first president of the Association at the 191 3 meeting in Kansas City, Missouri. The Association was reorganized in 1913 under a new Constitution and Bylaws which established the House of Delegates and the Board of Trustees. Doctor Brown was chairman of the Committee on Dental Legislation for 21 years following his presidency. Through his efforts the status of dentists in the armed forces was equalized by law with that of physicians, and proposals for a sharp increase in tariffs on dental imports were defeated. Doctor Hartzell, of Minneapolis, became the fifty-ninth president of the Association at the 1921 meeting in Milwaukee. In that year, a number of dental schools began stipulating one year of predental college work as a requirement for admission. Doctor Hartzell, who was a dentist and a physician, in 1904 organized the periodontia department at the University of Minnesota, where he was a professor of oral and general surgery. Doctor Ward, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, became the seventysixth president of the Association at the 193 8 meeting in St. Louis. The House of Delegates adopted a set of principles and recommendations for a national health program. Doctor Ward was dean of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry from 1916 to 1934, when he was named Jonathan Taft Professor of Dentistry and chairman of the Department of Dental Materials.
