Viscoelastic Properties Of Orthodontic Adhesives Used For Lingual Fixed Retainer Bonding, Demetrios P. Papadogiannis, A. Iliadi, T. Gerard Bradley, N. Silikas, George Eliades, T. Eliades

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Objective

To evaluate the viscoelastic properties of two experimental BPA-free and one BisGMA-based orthodontic resin composite adhesives for bonding fixed retainers.

Methods

A commercially available BisGMA-based (TXA: Transbond LR) and two bisphenol A-free experimental adhesives (EXA and EXB) were included in the study. The viscoelastic behavior of the adhesives was evaluated under static and dynamic conditions at dry and wet states and at various temperatures (21, 37, 50 °C). The parameters determined were shear modulus (G), Young’s modulus (E) under static testing and storage modulus (G1), loss tangent (tan δ) and dynamic viscosity (n*) under …

Objectives

Postoperative pain management is of highest interest for patients undergoing maxillofacial surgery including microvascular reconstructive surgery. Currently, there is a lack of information regarding process and outcome of postoperative pain management after microvascular reconstruction.

Materials and methods

In a prospective clinical study, 31 adults were evaluated on the first postoperative day following microvascular reconstruction with a radial forearm flap using the standardized questionnaire of the Germany-wide project Quality Improvement in Postoperative Pain Management (QUIPS). It enables a standardized assessment of patients’ characteristics, pain parameters, outcome and pain therapy process parameters.

Results

Pain management consisted predominately of premedication with midazolam, …

Optimizing Anterior Implant Outcome Immediately After Implant Placement And Grafting By Using Patient’S Extracted Teeth: A Case Report, Soni Prasad, Jay Darryl Banez, Despoina Bompolaki, Yvonne Hart Jan 2017

Optimizing anterior implant outcome using patient’s extracted teeth.

Successful implant treatment in the anterior maxilla is predicated on providing a functional and esthetically acceptable outcome. As well, achieving a predictable ideal emergence profile and soft tissue contour is expected. Placing immediate provisional restorations utilizing the patient’s modified extracted teeth can facilitate initiate facial soft tissue contouring while precluding undue pressure on the surgical site during the early healing phase. This allows for a one stage surgical procedure, fixed provisionalization and ideal tissue contouring.

This clinical report presents the use of a patient’s modified extracted permanent teeth as bonded fixed provisional …

Immunohistochemical Analysis Of Il-1 Beta In The Discs Of Patients With Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction, Luis Eduardo Almeida, Sean Pierce, Joseph Zacharias, William E. Cullinan, Lucia Noronha, Marcia Olandoski, Vinicius Tramontina, Carla Loreto, Rosalia Leonardi Jan 2017

Purpose: Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a cytokine that participates in the regulation of immune responses and inflammatory reactions. It is hypothesized that IL-1 levels may be elevated in patients suffering from temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to determine the association of IL-1β expression with TMD using an immunohistochemical approach to evaluate the joint disc.

Materials and methods: A total of 39 human temporomandibular joint disc samples were collected, with 31 samples in the test group. Nineteen of the test group samples were from discs of patients with anterior disc displacement with reduction, and 12 …

The oral cavity is the first component of the digestive tract, which is delimited by the lips anteriorly and the oropharynx posteriorly. The oral cavity functions as a protective barrier and is an essential component for speech and swallowing, mastication, digestion, and taste sensation.

The oral examination comprises a uniform and consistent inspection of the head and neck and an intraoral evaluation of the hard and soft tissues (see the images below) in conjunction with a thorough medical and dental history. The entire mouth should be inspected regardless of the patient’s chief complaint and reasons for the visit. [1 …

The Relationships Between Fluoride Intake Levels And Fluorosis Of Late‐Erupting Permanent Teeth, Pradeep Bhagavatula, Alexandra Curtis, Barbara Broffitt, Karin Weber-Gasparoni, John J. Warren, Steven M. Levy Jan 2017

The Relationships Between Fluoride Intake Levels And Fluorosis Of Late‐Erupting Permanent Teeth, Pradeep Bhagavatula, Alexandra Curtis, Barbara Broffitt, Karin Weber-Gasparoni, John J. Warren, Steven M. Levy

Objectives

To examine the relationships between fluoride intake levels and fluorosis of late‐erupting permanent teeth.

Methods

The current study used information collected from 437 children in the longitudinal Iowa Fluoride Study. Participants' fluoride intake information was collected using questionnaires from birth to age 10 years. Estimated mean daily fluoride intake was categorized into low, moderate, and high intake tertiles for each age interval (2‐5, 5‐8, and 2‐8 years). Bivariate analyses were performed to study the relationships between self‐reported fluoride intake levels during three age intervals and dental fluorosis.

Results

For canines and second molars, the prevalence of mostly mild fluorosis …

Expression Of Interleukin-1 And Temporomandibular Disorder: Contemporary Review Of The Literature, Adam Sorenson, Kyle Hresko, Seth Butcher, Sean Pierce, Vinícius Augusto Tramontina, Rosalia Leonardi, Carla Loreto, Jose A. Bosio, Luis Eduardo Almeida Jan 2017

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), leading to jaw dysfunction, joint and muscle pain, and a decrease in quality of life. A communication network of pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators called cytokines maintains the homeostasis of the TMJ. This review will focus on the Interleukin (IL) family of cytokines, which have been quantified in TMJ synovial fluids in a variety of studies. IL-1α and IL-1β have pro-inflammatory effects, while the endogenous receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) inhibits the pro-inflammatory effects of IL-1.

Methods: A literature search (2006–2016) to identify eligible studies was completed …

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by chronic high blood glucose concentrations (hyperglycemia). When it is left untreated or improperly managed, it can lead to acute complications including diabetic ketoacidosis and non-ketotic hyperosmolar coma. In addition, possible long-term complications include impotence, nerve damage, stroke, chronic kidney failure, cardiovascular disease, foot ulcers, and retinopathy. Historically, universal methods to measure glycemic control for the diagnosis of diabetes included fasting plasma glucose level (FPG), 2-h plasma glucose (2HP), and random plasma glucose. However, these measurements did not provide information about glycemic control over a long period of time. To …
