Small Group Market Health Insurance Purchasing Cooperatives Revisited, Karl Polzer

National Health Policy Forum

As Congress was in the final stages of considering the Clinton administration's proposal for comprehensive health reform and various derivatives of it, this Forum session examined the progress of several purchasing cooperatives in helping employees of small firms find affordable insurance coverage. The first half of the meeting focused on California's purchasing alliance, especially its impact on prices in the small-group insurance market. Varying models of cooperatives (or alliances) being set up in Florida, Iowa, and Kentucky also were discussed, with special attention being paid to their potential for addressing fundamental problems such as rising costs and access to insurance.

The Effect Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Education Program On Knowledge, Attitudes And Sexual Behavior Of Selected College Students, Arlene Jaine Jackson Montgomery

The problem studied in this investigation was whether a behaviorally focused Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Program affects the knowledge, sexual attitudes and sexual behavior of college students.

Three hundred and six first-and third-year college students were included in the study from one university located in Southeastern Virginia. The sample was predominately female, African-American and mainly between the ages of 16-22 years of age.

Freshmen students were presently enrolled in the institution's HIV/AIDS education program, which was a part of a required course. The class sessions consisted of a pretest prior to student's completing the reading assignment …

Frank mental disorders, such as depression and panic disorder, are prevalent in primary care; they cause people substantial suffering and interfere with daily functioning. Even subthreshold or "subsyndromal" conditions, with fewer symptoms than necessary for making a diagnosis, cause substantial morbidity. Recent literature on mental disorders in primary care, where many, if not most, people with mental health problems are seen, is reviewed with focus on recognition and diagnosis issues, management of these problems in primary care, obstacles to accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, and prevention issues. Development Of A Test Of Cognitive Bias In Medical Decision Making, Paul J. Hershberger, Howard M. Part, Ronald J. Markert, Steven M. Cohen, William W. Finger

Purpose. To develop an inventory to measure the influence of cognitive biases on medical decisions. Method. The Inventory of Cognitive Biases in Medicine (ICBM) consists of 22 medical scenarios in which respondents choose between alternatives that represent bias-prone or statistically based decisions. In 1992 and 1993 the ICBM was administered to 102 medical students and residents and 318 physician faculty at the Wright State University School of Medicine. Results. The statistically correct decision was made in fewer than half the ICBM scenarios for both groups (students and residents, 41%; faculty, 49%); and only the faculty scored better than chance.
