Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Objectives: This study aimed to determine the risk factors for the occurrence of arrhythmias after either transcatheter or surgical closure of atrial septal defect. Methods: This prospective study included 150 patients admitted for transcatheter or surgical closure of atrial septal defect. Transthoracic echocardiography together with a twelve-leads ECG were done during 1 and 3 months follow up. The paired T, chi-square and Logistic regression tests were used to detect any association between any arrhythmias and factors that may affect its occurrence. Results: One-hundred and twenty-three patients had percutaneous device closure while the remaining 27 patients had surgical closure. The youngest …

© 2020, The Author(s). Background: Cardiovascular anomalies are the largest group of congenital anomalies and the major cause of death in young children, with various data linking rising atrial septal defect incidence (ASDI) with prenatal cannabis exposure. Objectives / Hypotheses. Is cannabis associated with ASDI in USA? Is this relationship causal? Methods: Geospatiotemporal cohort study, 1991–2016. Census populations of adults, babies, congenital anomalies, income and ethnicity. Drug exposure data on cigarettes, alcohol abuse, past month cannabis use, analgesia abuse and cocaine taken from National Survey of Drug Use and Health (78.9% response rate). Cannabinoid concentrations from Drug Enforcement Agency. Inverse …

Background: Percutaneous closure of atrial septal defects has been shown to be a safe alternative to surgery. Despite this, past studies have largely been focused on either small- to medium-sized atrial septal defects or percutaneous closure in children and young adults.
Purpose: Our study sought to examine if right ventricular function and size improved after percutaneous closure of large atrial septal defects in the adult population.
Methods: Over a 5-year span, 25 patients underwent percutaneous closure of a secundum atrial septal defect with an occluder device. A retrospective examination was conducted for each patient, including both echocardiography and chart review …
Diversion Of The Inferior Vena Cava Following Repair Of Atrial Septal Defect Causing Hypoxemia, Ellen A. Thompson, Silvestre Cansino, Dennis Moritz, Romaine Perdue Perdue
Diversion Of The Inferior Vena Cava Following Repair Of Atrial Septal Defect Causing Hypoxemia, Ellen A. Thompson, Silvestre Cansino, Dennis Moritz, Romaine Perdue Perdue
Silvestre P. Cansino
Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are a common congenital abnormality, and operative repair is a routine, safe procedure. Diversion of the inferior vena cava (IVC) into the left atrium is an unusual complication following ASD closure. We report a case that illustrates the problem created by this right-to-left shunt. A middle-aged woman underwent ASD repair. She developed hypoxemia postoperatively. A transthoracic echocardiogram confirmed a right-to-left shunt, found only with agitated saline injected into the femoral vein, not into the basilic vein. Surgical reexploration revealed a residual ASD diverting IVC flow into the left atrium, which was repaired with a pericardial patch. …

Background: This study was performed to test the hypothesis that there exists a correlation between the Butler-Leggett (BL) criterion for right ventricular hypertrophy on the electrocardiogram and the Qp/Qs shunt ratio in adults with ostium secundum atrial septal defects (ASDs).
Methods: Demographic, cardiac catheterization, ASD closure, and electrocardiographic data were acquired on 70 patients with secundum ASDs closed percutaneously. Simple linear regression and logistic regression models were created to test the hypothesis.
Results: The mean Qp/Qs ratio and BL criterion value were 1.61 +/- 0.46 and 0.11 +/- 0.41, respectively. The BL criterion values correlated with shunt ratios (r(2) = …
