Laboratory Automation Curriculum At Keck Graduate Institute, James D. Sterling

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel curriculum in laboratory automation and high-throughput technologies has been developed at the Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) over the past five years as part of the professional master's degree program in applied life sciences. The goal of this curriculum has been four-fold: (1) motivate study by describing the need for automation through several example problems in combinatorial biological discovery, (2) provide elements of fundamental engineering science that are required for the development of the technologies and tools that enable automation, (3) provide opportunities for the students to see and use state-of-the-art instruments, learn about existing industry standards, and to …

Reconstructability analysis (RA) dates back to the pioneering work of Ashby in the mid-1960s. In the 1970s and 1980s, RA was the subject of very active research in the systems community. It receded for a time as a focus of activity, but the special issue of the International Journal of General Systems in 1996 on the General Systems Problem Solver and the special IJGS issue in 2000 on Reconstructability Analysis in China marked the renewal of interest in this area. Implications Of Personal Recovery History For Training And Development Of Addiction Treatment Workers, Bruce K. Barnard

Masters Theses

The purpose of the study was to identify and compare competencies perceived as most important by addiction treatment workers with, and without, a personal history of recovery. A survey was developed and administered to 94 workers in three community-based addiction treatment agencies. The study found broad support for the competencies published by the Addiction Technology Transfer Center, National Curriculum Committee (1998). There were no significant differences in perceptions of competencies by workers with a personal recovery history and those without such history. Results indicate that factors such as workplace culture may be more powerful than recovery history in influencing worker …

By using high concentrations of buffer, electroosmotic flow within uncoated channels of a microfluidic chip was minimized, allowing the free solution electrophoretic separation of DNA. More importantly, because of the ability to efficiently dissipate heat within these channels, field strengths as high as 600 V/cm could be applied with minimal Joule heating (< 2 °C). As a result of the higher field strengths, separations within an 8-cm-long channel were achieved within a few minutes. However, when the electrophoretic separation of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) less than 22 bases in length was performed, containing the fluorophore Texas Red as an end label, more than the expected single peak was observed at this high electric field. On the other hand, the free solution electrophoresis of a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) consisting of a random sequence did exhibit the expected single peak. The appearance of these multiple peaks for ssDNA is shown to be dependent upon the base content and sequence of the ssDNA as well as on the chemical structure of the fluorophore used to tag the DNA for detection. Specifically, the peaks can be attributed to different secondary structures that result either from hydrophobic interactions between the DNA bases and an uncharged fluorescent dye or from G-quadruplexes within guanine-rich strands.

Several studies have reported that parents are often reluctant to vaccinate their own or other people's children, even when the balance of health risks and benefits clearly favors vaccination. This reluctance has been interpreted as a manifestation of omission bias, a general tendency to prefer inactive to active options even when inaction leads to worse outcomes or greater risks. The research raises significant public health concerns as well as worries about human decision biases in general.
