In this issue of the Journal, Jindal and colleagues compellingly document the high disease burden for asthma and chronic bronchitis in India.1 With a comprehensive survey of 169 575 individuals from 23 sites across 12 centres, they estimate that one or more respiratory symptoms were present in 8.5% of individuals. The national burden of asthma and chronic bronchitis is estimated at 17.23 million and 14.84 million, respectively. In absolute terms, these are not small numbers. The unfortunate reality, however, is that the brunt of this disease burden is likely disproportionately borne by the economically impoverished and the socially disenfranchised. The …

Meaningful Use And Meaningful Curricula: A Survey Of Health Informatics Programs In The U.S., Kai Koong, Madison Ngafeeson, Lai Lui

The introduction of the US government’s Meaningful Use criteria carries with it many implications including the training curriculum of healthcare personnel. This study examines 108 health informatics degree programmes across the USA. First, the courses offered are identified and classified into generic classes. Next, these generic groupings are mapped to two important frameworks: the Learning to Manage Health Information (LMHI) academic framework; and the Meaningful Use criteria policy framework. Results suggest that while current curricula seemed acceptable in addressing Meaningful Use Stage 1 objective, there was insufficient evidence that these curricula could support Meaningful Use Stage 2 and …

Attitudes Toward Workplace Mobbing In Slovenian Research Organisations, Brigita Horvat, Milan Pagon

Creating a "mobbing-safe" working environment can be a real challenge; to achieve it, a better understanding of related constructs is necessary. To obtain insight into researchers' attitudes toward workplace mobbing and behavioural intentions, we used a case scenario method. The results show that respondents, on average, consider the mobbing cases presented in a questionnaire to be very serious. Their attitudes and behavioural intentions depend more on their opinion about colleagues' attitudes and related intentions and less on their own, which shows a lower integrity than desired. Self-efficacy has been shown to be an important element in the success of individuals in a variety of different settings. This research examined the impact of a two week new employee orientation training program on the general and social self-efficacy of newly hired direct care employees at state mental health facilities. The research showed that the training program did not have a statistically significant impact on the social self-efficacy of the new employees after the training or after one month on the job.
