Impact Of Moral Injury On Work Performance In Nurses Following The Covid-19 Surges, Annette Callis, Trisha Saul, Ross Bindler

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Background

Moral Injury (MI) was defined by Jonathan Shay in 1994 as committing acts that betray one’s moral compass in high-stakes situations, while under the authority of another, that severely affect one’s well-being. MI was measured solely in the military prior to the COVID pandemic.

Aims

1.Explore the relationship between moral injury (MI) and perceived work performance in hospital nurses following the pandemic surges. 2. Determine relationships between MI and select participant demographics and between work performance and select demographics.

Sample

A convenience sample of 191 nurses from seven Southern California Hospitals participated in the study from March to June …

Podium Presentation: Levels Of Compassion Satisfaction Among Prescribers, Nursing Staff, And Chaplains, Teresa Bigand, Adam Gaines, Dawn Bock, Jamie Roney, Rachel Freedberg, Rosemary Timmerman, Danell Stengem

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background:

Patient care delivered in hospitals is fast-paced, complex, and ever-changing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses, prescribers, and chaplains provided front-line, whole-person care in hospital settings to patients who had decreased or no access to visitors without the use of technology while facing acute illness and difficult prognoses. During the pandemic, nurses and physicians reported increased fatigue and stress in scientific literature. Poor emotional well-being may lead to decreased compassion satisfaction. Increased compassion satisfaction may mitigate adverse occupational and patient-centered outcomes, support fewer missed days at work, lead to higher staff satisfaction, and raise patient satisfaction scores. Literature reports that …

Podium Presentation: Relationships Between Nursing Stress And Perceived Importance Of Access To Chaplains During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Teresa Bigand, Adam Gaines, Sheila Doucette, Danell Stengem, Rachel Freedberg, Jamie Roney, Rosemary Timmerman

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background:

Hospital chaplains are trained to provide spiritual support to inpatients, family members, and support persons across the continuum of care. Patients receiving a chaplain visit during their hospital stay report higher satisfaction, quality of life, and spiritual well-being. Chaplain consultation during hospitalization is related to higher rates of hospice enrollment and lower rates of in-hospital deaths. Additionally, evidence suggests nurses who are employed in hospitals with staff chaplains report lower stress and compassion fatigue based on frequency of interactions with chaplains during worked shifts. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, hospital nurses providing front-line care report higher stress levels compared to …

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background:

Occupational burnout, a symptom of chronic work-related stress, can lead to negative health outcomes such as anxiety, depression, diabetes, insomnia, and increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Burnout also augments negative occupational risks such as increased sick days, decreased productivity, disability claims, and turnover. Nurses working in the hospital setting report high levels of work-related stress and burnout related to patient acuity levels and short staffing, and rates have further worsened in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The emergence of the virus brought multiple hospital surges, greatly increasing nursing workload as patient acuity climbed and simultaneously, national nurse …

Podium Presentation: Promoting Holistic Health: Impact Of Vocati On The Spiritual And Moral Development In Youth, Joann Long, Jeremy Smith

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background: Approximately one out of every six individuals are adolescents between the ages of 10 to 19. Promoting health and reducing risks for this age group has life-long health and societal consequences. Evidence suggests positive and negative risk-taking behaviors cluster in this population. Models for the promotion of positive youth development have shifted in focus from avoidance of risk-taking behaviors to emphasis on psychosocial competence and holistic well-being. Evidence suggests spiritual wellbeing, regardless of conceptual definition, is more often than not associated with positive health outcomes and development in youth. However, few studies have included spiritual and moral constructs in …

Podium Presentation: Or Nurses Psychological Well-Being And Redeployment During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Joy Lanfranchi, Trisha Saul, Ross Bindler Jun 2022

Podium Presentation: Or Nurses Psychological Well-Being And Redeployment During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Joy Lanfranchi, Trisha Saul, Ross Bindler

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Operating Room (OR) nurses were redeployed to patient care units during times of maximal surge capacity in hospitals caring for patients with the novel coronavirus. Hospital bed and staffing needs caused hospitals to cancel elective surgeries, allowing for conservation of bed space and nurses to accommodate the patient influx. Despite the highly specialized nature and skill set of OR nursing, OR nurses were expected to function in traditional patient care roles, where levels of self-assessed competence vary based on experience and training. There is a paucity of literature on the psychological impact of redeployment of …

Effects Of Mindfulness Stress Reduction Program On Nurses: An Integrated Research Review, Gisele Nicole Bazan Jun 2022

Effects Of Mindfulness Stress Reduction Program On Nurses: An Integrated Research Review, Gisele Nicole Bazan

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background/Purpose:

Prevalence of nurse burnout can be as high as 40% (Duarte & Pinto-Gouveia, 2016). Variations of mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have been utilized to combat burnout among nurses. Many studies utilize an adapted version(s) of the eight week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) course develop by Dr. Kabat-Zinn, which aims to aid in the improvement of mindfulness through practice of linking one’s physical and mental state in a nonjudgmental way (Ghawadra et al., 2019). Multiple instruments to measure levels of burnout and other psychological effects job stressors may have on nurses have also been applied. Higher levels of burnout have been …

Assessment Of Trauma-Informed Care Knowledge Among Caregivers In An Inpatient Mental Health Unit, Katie Rhea, Loni Conley, Jeremy Williams, Kathryn Wiltfong, Teresa Bigand Jun 2022

Assessment Of Trauma-Informed Care Knowledge Among Caregivers In An Inpatient Mental Health Unit, Katie Rhea, Loni Conley, Jeremy Williams, Kathryn Wiltfong, Teresa Bigand

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background: Research suggests exposure to traumatic events is extremely common. Furthermore, risk of developing chronic health conditions or engaging harmful behaviors such as substance use later in life increases with more frequent exposure to traumatic events, especially during childhood. Best evidence recommends delivery of health care using a Trauma Informed Care (TIC) approach to improve outcomes such as anxiety or depression. This care approach guides healthcare providers on interactions with patients centered on the tenets of (1) safety, (2) trustworthiness, (3) peer support, (4) collaboration, (5) empowerment and choice, and (6) cultural, historical, and sex issues. On one inpatient …

Podium Presentation: Differences In Exercise Patterns Among Day And Night Shift Nurses During Covid-19 Surges, Randy Sanoff, Teresa Bigand, Elena Crooks, Katie Carroll, Mary Halabi

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background: Registered nurses (RN) working in acute-care hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic reported unprecedented stress. Walking between 7000-10,000 steps each day offers positive benefits such as improved mood, reduced stress, and reduction in overall mortality risk. Additionally, the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Physical Activity Guidelines recommends adults should engage in 75 -150 minutes per week of moderate to intense activity for health benefits. Yet, some research suggests that number of steps taken per week decreased and time spent sedentary increased during the first year of the onset of COVID-19 compared to the year prior. Among nurses working full-time …
