Journal of Appalachian Health
The Journal of Appalachian Health is introducing a new section this issue. While the journal is centralizing some of the best research and commentary on Appalachian health, the editorial team felt that practice-focused groups, organizations, and agencies may not be fully represented in the publication.

Journal of Appalachian Health
A meta-analysis of oncology papers from around the world revealed that cancer patients who lived more than 50 miles away from hospital centers routinely presented with more advanced stages of disease at diagnosis, exhibited lower adherence to prescribed treatments, presented with poorer diagnoses, and reported a lower quality of life than patients who lived nearer to care facilities. Connected health approaches—or the use of broadband and telecommunications technologies to evaluate, diagnose, and monitor patients beyond the clinic—are becoming an indispensable tool in medicine to overcome the obstacle of distance.

The L.A.U.N.C.H. Collaborative: Linking & Amplifying User-Centered Networks through Connected Health: A Demonstration of Broadband-Enabled Connected Health and Community-Based Co-Design brings together a group of organizations that are eager to use Appalachian Kentucky as a site for the development of a project aimed at creating an environment that addresses two of the nation’s major concerns about cancer. First, individuals who live in rural and remote areas are more likely to die of cancer than those who live in urban or suburban settings. And second, geographic obstacles hinder their ability to access evidence-based strategies that can prevent cancer or treat it …

Medicine And The Museum: An Experiential Case Study In Art History Pedagogy And Practice, Marcia Brennan
Art History Pedagogy & Practice
This article brings three scholarly and professional perspectives to bear on museum-based learning experiences for undergraduate pre-medical and STEM students. In the first section, Marcia Brennan describes the seminar on “Medicine and the Museum: Clinical Aesthetics and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston” that she teaches at Rice University. Brennan is a modernist art historian, and her discussion focuses on the ways in which classes such as this can contribute meaningfully to undergraduate pre-medical and STEM education. Brennan collaborated with Joshua Eyler, who served as Executive Director of Rice University’s Center for Teaching Excellence. In the second section, Eyler discusses …

Diverse Mindfulness Practices For Bipolar Recovery: Qualitative Study Results, Sasha Strong
Diverse Mindfulness Practices For Bipolar Recovery: Qualitative Study Results, Sasha Strong
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
This study investigated the lived experience of Buddhist-informed mindfulness practice and its utilization in recovery from bipolar disorder (BD) in 9 adult participants. Established mindfulness based interventions (MBIs) decontextualize mindfulness practice from a Buddhist theory base, omitting conceptual frameworks that may have adaptive value in recovery from BD. In interviews, participants reported blending techniques learned from various Buddhist lineages throughout the course of their recovery, as well as a variety of other contemplative practices such as techniques to cultivate adaptive emotions, devotional practices, visualization practices, embodiment practices, investigative practices, and informal daily practice. Mindfulness practice for recovery from BD is …

Improving The Inhaler, Kabir Malkani, Jesse Evensky, Bradley Freid, Alex Reibstein, Gregory C. Kane, Md
Phase 1
Background: It is estimated that about 1 in 10 Americans use inhalers to deliver inhaled drugs for respiratory disease such as COPD and asthma. Some studies have shown that up to 84% of people use their inhaler incorrectly, which can cause long term problems and acute flareups. Therefore, improving the inhaler design to allow for ease of use was the main focus of our project.
Methods: We had a discussion with a pulmonary critical care attending who provided information on proper patient inhaler use and common user errors. He also gave us a sample of different inhalers on the market …

Color-Changing Device To Improve Adherence To Foley Catheter Replacement Protocols And Reduce Urinary Tract Infection Frequency, Alexander Straus, Ms, Kurt Hill, Bryn Cross, Jason M. Fields, Md
Phase 1
Background: Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are a major source of patient morbidity and mortality in healthcare settings and have a significant financial impact on the healthcare system. Many hospitals have clinical protocols in place to continually reassess the necessity of indwelling foley catheters and remove them if their use is no longer warranted. However, it is still common for indwelling foley catheters to be overlooked and remain in place, even after meeting criteria for removal. A design project was conducted that sought to improve adherence to clinical protocols, and reduce frequency of CAUTIs, by creating a color-changing device …

Design Thinking For Community-Provider Collaboration: Designing A Culture- And User-Friendly Refugee Wellness Center, Ellen Solomon, Oluwatoni Okuboyejo, Shandon Coffman, Brandon Joa, Bon Ku, Md, Mpp
Phase 1
Background: Designing South Philadelphia’s first permanent healthcare facility dedicated to refugee health presents a unique opportunity to integrate cultural sensitivity with principles of community health. Design thinking (human-centered design) is a promising strategy to address health and social justice concerns through the development of innovative products and services that prioritize population needs. This project utilized design thinking to inform suggestions to the design of Hansjörg Wyss Wellness Center that promote a culturally sensitive and welcoming environment in order to improve healthcare outcomes for the refugee population in Philadelphia.
Methods: Standard qualitative data gathering methods were used to gather insight into …

Journal of Health Ethics
The words “human medical experimentation” conjure up visions of Nazi medicine, which has come to exemplify the worst evils in the history of humankind. Places like Auschwitz and Dachau, where human life was cheap and test subjects plentiful were used as laboratories.
In 2010 the US government apologized to Guatemala for allowing U.S. doctors to infect Guatemalan prisoners and mental patients with syphilis 65 years earlier, while acknowledging dozens of similar experiments in the United States. These included studies that often involved making healthy people sick. such as in the Tuskegee syphilis study.
These experiments were often life threatening and …

The Colored Pill: A History Film Performance Exposing Race Based Medicines, Wanda Lakota
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Of the 32 pharmaceuticals approved by the FDA in 2005, one medicine stood out. That medicine, BiDil®, was a heart failure medication that set a precedent for being the first approved race based drug for African Americans. Though BiDil®, was the first race specific medicine, racialized bodies have been used all throughout history to advance medical knowledge. The framework for race, history, and racialized drugs was so multi-tiered; it could not be conceptualized from a single perspective. For this reason, this study examines racialized medicine through performance, history, and discourse analysis.
The focus of this work aimed …
