Polymorphisms Of Ovine Prion Protein (Prp) Gene In Pramenka Sheepbreed Population In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Ervin Zecevic, Admir Dokso, Amra Kazic, Muhamed Brka

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are a group of diseases that affect the nervous system and lead to death. The putative infectious agent is the host-encoded prion protein (PrP) and it appears that the development of scrapie in sheep is closely related to polymorphisms in the host PrP gene. The aim of this study was to investigate three well-known polymorphisms in exon 3 of the PrP gene (at codons 136, 154, and 171) that have a clear and significant effect on scrapie in sheep. Four other polymorphisms (at codons 145, 185, 231, and 237) that are yet undefined were also investigated. …

Seven alleles, from 192 bp to 210 bp, and 20 genotypes were detected at the GC101 locus in 447 individuals totally. The preponderant …

Impact Of B. Melitensis Rev-1 Vaccination On Brucellosis Prevalence, Adosinda Maria Coelho, Maria De Lurdes Pinto, Juan Garcia Diez, Ana Claudia Coelho Jan 2015

Impact Of B. Melitensis Rev-1 Vaccination On Brucellosis Prevalence, Adosinda Maria Coelho, Maria De Lurdes Pinto, Juan Garcia Diez, Ana Claudia Coelho

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, in the northeastern region of Portugal, previously exhibited the highest brucellosis prevalence in the entire small ruminant population of Portugal. Consequently, a vaccination program of the whole population with Brucella melitensis Rev-1 was carried out from 2001 to 2004, and further compulsory Rev-1 vaccination of 3- to 6-month-old lambs and kids was carried out between 2005 and 2007. The prevalence of brucellosis decreased by 71.42% in 2004, with a 2-fold decrease occurring from 2005 to 2007. The reduction of brucellosis prevalence was statistically significant (P < 0.001) according to flock size. By species, brucellosis prevalence decreased 14.5-fold in sheep and 5.5-fold in goats in 2004. Regarding flock constitution, it decreased by 77% for pure flocks and 73% in mixed flocks in 2004. Regarding the animals involved in production, brucellosis prevalence decreased during the 7-year period. It was concluded that Rev-1 vaccination of the whole population was effective in decreasing brucellosis prevalence. These results contribute to the scarce information available regarding the effect of Rev-1 vaccination on different characteristics of flocks. They may be used to improve the efficiency of brucellosis eradication programs within livestock management.

Evaluation Of Ultrasonography As A Diagnostic Tool For Hepatic Hydatid Cysts In Sheep, Hussein Awad Hussein, Mohammed Elrashidy

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This retrospective study was designed to evaluate the use of ultrasonography for the diagnosis of hepatic hydatid cysts. This study was conducted on 22 sheep, which were classified into 2 groups according to their liver health group (healthy liver = 13 and cystic liver = 9). Biochemically, serum concentrations of gamma-glutamyl transferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, and globulins were significantly increased (P < 0.01) while albumin was lowered (P < 0.01) in sheep with cystic livers. Ultrasonographically, rounded, anechoic, and unilocular hydatid cysts with elliptical circumferences ranging from 6 to 10 cm were seen. The interiors of cysts contained echogenic particulate materials, septations, or fine echoes. At the 10th intercostal space (ICS), ventral margin, size, thickness, and angle of livers increased in sheep with hepatic cysts, while the diameter of portal vein decreased in sheep with liver cysts. At the 9th ICS, the circumference of the gall bladder was lowered in sheep with hepatic cysts (P < 0.01). The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of ultrasonography for diagnosis of hepatic hydatid cysts were 80%, 100%, and 100% and 83%, respectively. In conclusion, ultrasonography alone or in combination with some biochemical parameters reflecting liver function could be helpful for the diagnosis of hepatic hydatid cysts in sheep.

New Understanding Of An Old Phenomenon: Uncontrolled Factors And Misconceptions That Cast A Shadow Over Studies Of The ‘Male Effect’ On Reproduction In Small Ruminants, Trina Jorre De St Jorre, Penny Alison Rhian Hawken, Graeme Bruce Martin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In female sheep and goats, exposure to males can be used to induce ovulation and thus control and synchronise fertility. This 'male effect' offers simple, cost-effective, and hormone-free management of reproduction in flocks and herds but, despite decades of research, significant gaps in our knowledge impede commercial application. Many of these gaps can be traced back to misconceptions in the early documentation of the male effect, and others are the result of uncontrolled factors in experimental design. Consequently, it is often difficult to draw conclusions from past research, to further our understanding of the phenomenon, and to make recommendations for …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study was conducted to compare the fertility of ewes, the survival rates, and the growth performance of lambs that were crossbred by mating German Black-Headed Mutton (GBM) rams with Kıvırcık ewes. The average lambing rates of the GBM × K(F1), Bandırma-I and Bandırma-II genotype, and Kıvırcık ewes were 80.00%, 75.73%, 76.78%, and 83.72%, respectively. The differences in lambing rates between the genotypes were significant (P < 0.01). The genotypes had a significant effect on litter size at birth, but not on fecundity. The differences in lambs' survival rates between the genotypes were significant (P < 0.05). The birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), and yearling live weight (YLW) of the lambs were 3.77 kg, 34.11 kg, and 43.71 kg for the GBM × K (F1); 3.74 kg, 32.98 kg, and 44.91 kg for the Bandırma-I; 3.73 kg, 33.18 kg, and 45.71 kg for the Bandırma-II; and 3.45 kg, 30.92 kg, and 42.22 kg for the Kıvırcık lambs. The results of this study showed that crossbreeding between the GBM and Kıvırcık breed did not significantly increase lamb production. However, crossbred lambs did not have significant survival problems when compared to native Kıvırcık lambs and had higher growth performance than purebred Kıvırcık lambs.

Concentration Of Products Of Nitric Oxide Oxidation And Some Vitamins In Sheep With Naturally Acquired Babesiosis, Handan Mert, İbrahi̇m Yörük, Yeter Değer, Ni̇hat Mert, Semi̇ha Dede, Fatmagül Yur

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of the present study was to determine serum concentrations of the products of nitric oxide oxidation (nitrate and nitrite) and some vitamins (retinol acetate, \alpha- and \delta-tocopherol, and vitamin D_3) in sheep naturally infected with Babesia ovis. The investigation included 30 infected and 10 control sheep. Serum \alpha -tocopherol levels were significantly lower (P < 0.05), and nitrate and nitrite concentrations were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in infected animals than in controls. It is thought that the elevated nitrate and nitrite levels of the sheep infected with babesiosis were due to the result of damage caused by Babesia. On the other hand, a significant decrease was observed in \alpha -tocopherol levels in sheep with babesiosis because of damage and pathophysiological changes to erythrocytes.

Colony morphology, agglutination by acriflavin, H2S production, CO2 requirement, dye sensitivity in thionin, basic fuchsin, growth characteristics in streptomycin, lysis with Tbilisi phage, and agglutination with monospecific A- and M antisera were examined for identification and biotyping. The isolates from 21 of 55 sheep and 1 of 10 goat abortion cases were identified as Brucella melitensis. Biotyping revealed that 14, 6, and 1 of 22 Brucella spp. were B. …

A 3-year-old East Friesian sheep from a sheep flock that suffered from chronic copper poisoning was forwarded to the Clinic of Farm Animals in the Aristotle University. The animal had signs of a hemolytic disease indicative of chronic copper poisoning and also nervous signs. Laboratory examinations were consistent with chronic copper poisoning. This was confirmed after necropsy and liver toxicological analysis. By blood smear examination, metarubricytosis, basophilic stippling, anisocytosis, and polychromasia were found. Also, brain histopathological examination revealed focal areas of gliosis in the cerebral cortex and white matter areas. Satellitosis, neuronal degeneration (chromatolysis) and neuronophagia were also observed. These …

The seroprevalence of Brucellosis in human, sheep, and cattle populations was investigated in rural regions of Kırıkkale in Turkey. Serum samples were obtained from 1436 humans, and 3.2% (46) of the population was found to be positive by Rose Bengal Plate test (RBPT) and 3.0% (43) gave positive results with the standard tube agglutination test (STAT). Immunoglobulin class analysis of RBPT-positive sera using the ELISA test gave positive results for 33 people (75%) with Brucella ELISA IgG and for 11 people (25%) with Brucella ELISA IgM. The evaluation of 804 serum samples, which were obtained from 301 cattle and 503 …
