Turkish Journal of Botany

The main objective of this study is to identify and record the folk medicines used in Çamlıdere (Ankara) as well as to contribute to the preservation of this precious lore. For this purpose field trips were organized to Çamlıdere. A total of 79 taxa belonging to 66 genera and 33 families were recorded for the treatment of various disorders. The most represented families were Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, and Rosaceae, respectively. Respiratory tract diseases were the principal reasons for using folk medicines. Eight new folk medicines were included in the Turkish ethnobotanical repository with this study. Different ethnobotanical usages such as fuel …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Tulostoma ahmadii, a new species found in the subtropical pine forest of Malakand, Pakistan, is described and illustrated. It is characterized by parallel to squamulose deep reddish brown scales on stipe with bulbous base, warty exoperidium, and tubular and relatively large-sized basidiospores. Macro- and microscopic features along with sequence data demonstrated that Tulostoma ahmadii is a distinct species from other members of Tulostoma. T. Squamosum, which is represented here as a new record for the country, has also been characterized on a molecular basis.

The Role Of Anthropogenic Habitats As Substitutes For Natural Habitats: A Case Study On Epipactis Helleborine (L.) Crantz (Orchidaceae, Neottieae). Variations In Size And Nutrient Composition Of Seeds, Agnieszka Rewicz, Jeremi Kolodziejek, Anna Jakubska-Busse

Turkish Journal of Botany

Natural and anthropogenic habitats differed greatly in terms of soil nutrients. Soil at the anthropogenic sites contained significantly lower concentrations of nitrogen (N) than those at the natural sites. Seeds of Epipactis helleborine were sampled from these two contrasting growth habitats and their size and nutrient composition were recorded. The 8 populations of E. Helleborine were different in seed and embryo volumes, but there were no significant differences in seed width. Habitat type significantly influenced seed area: in the anthropogenic areas, seed area was greater than in the natural areas. Two distinct groups of populations were evident with regard to …

Comparison Of Rdna Regions (Its, Lsu, And Ssu) Of Some Aspergillus, Penicillium, And Talaromyces Spp., Rasi̇me Demi̇rel

Turkish Journal of Botany

Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Talaromyces spp. are commonly found worldwide and include industrially and medicinally important members. These genera are deeply related with life from soil to health hazards via their industrial products, surface proteins, biodiversity, food spoilage, mycotoxins, etc. These three genera progressively encounter important taxonomic revisions, such as the one fungus-one name concept, and various methods are available to establish their evolutionary and phylogenetic relationships. Besides morphological, microscopic, and extrolite analyses, nucleotide sequence analysis is the most preferred method. In particular, rDNA regions, such as the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), large subunit (LSU), and small subunit (SSU), are commonly …

Betalains And Expression Of Antioxidant Enzymes During Development Andabiotic Stress In Rivina Humilis L. Berries, Mohammad Imtiyaj Khan, Avinash Kumar, Parvatam Giridhar Jan 2016

Betalains And Expression Of Antioxidant Enzymes During Development Andabiotic Stress In Rivina Humilis L. Berries, Mohammad Imtiyaj Khan, Avinash Kumar, Parvatam Giridhar

Turkish Journal of Botany

This work investigated the betalains profile and associated molecular changes during Rivina humilis L. Berry development and 1 month after inducing stress through elicitors such as salicylic acid (SA, 0.05-0.5 mM) and chitosan (CH, 0.1%-1.0%). The results showed that, during berry development, diphenol oxidase activity of tyrosinase increased, which was reflected in an exponential increase in betalains accumulation. Expression levels of a putative Rivina humilis betanidin-5-O-glucosyltransferase 2 (RhBGT2) remained unchanged, while that of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) decreased. Treatment with SA (0.1 mM) and CH (0.5%) enhanced betalains accumulation. The pattern of betalains accumulation during berry …

Relationships Between Some Endogenous Signal Compounds And The Antioxidantsystem In Response To Chilling Stress In Maize (Zea Mays L.) Seedlings, Nevzat Esi̇m, Ökkeş Atici

Turkish Journal of Botany

This study investigated the correlation between endogenous levels of some signal compounds [nitric oxide (NO), salicylic acid (SA), abscisic acid (ABA)] and the antioxidant system in response to chilling stress in maize (Zea mays L.). Seedlings grown for 12 or 19 days under normal conditions (24/20 °C) were exposed to chilling stress (10/7 °C) for 2 days. The levels of NO, SA, ABA, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide anion (O2.-), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined in leaves of seedlings harvested on day 14 and day 21. In the same seedlings, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), and …

Leaflet Trichome Micromorphology In The Dolentes-Brevipedes Taxonomic Complex (Mimosa L., Mimosoideae), Mariana Grohar, Sonia Rosenfeldt, Matias Morales

Turkish Journal of Botany

We studied leaflets of 18 taxa of the genus Mimosa, specifically the Dolentes-Brevipedes taxonomic complex, focusing on micromorphology, type, shape, and density of trichomes. Within the nonglandular trichomes we described 3 types of nonbranched and 2 types of branched trichomes. We also described 2 types of stalked glandular trichomes, extending the recent classifications of trichomes in Mimosa. Multiseriate trichomes with lateral projections, which resemble incipient branching, are described here for many taxa. Most studied taxa have pubescent leaflets and show great variability in trichome density values. We also found 3 different types of blade margins with variation in type, alignment, …

Study Of Phylogenetic Relationship Of Turkish Species Ofmatthiola (Brassicaceae) Based On Issr Amplification, Beki̇r Doğan, Mustafa Çeli̇k, Murat Ünal, Abdurrahman Sefali, Esra Marti̇n, Ayla Kaya Jan 2016

Study Of Phylogenetic Relationship Of Turkish Species Ofmatthiola (Brassicaceae) Based On Issr Amplification, Beki̇r Doğan, Mustafa Çeli̇k, Murat Ünal, Abdurrahman Sefali, Esra Marti̇n, Ayla Kaya

Turkish Journal of Botany

Matthiola W.T.Aiton is a taxonomically complex genus in which there are many problems, mostly with Matthiola longipetala and M. Odoratissima. Matthiola species native to Turkey were collected from various locations in Anatolia, and their DNA was isolated. Revision studies performed on the basis of molecular data obtained from studies conducted in recent years have made the phylogenetic relationships and systematic positions of the taxa more apparent and reliable. Consequently, the remaining taxonomic problems among the species have been resolved through the use of DNA-based molecular analysis methods, which, unlike phenotype studies, are not affected by environmental factors. The inter-simple sequence …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Phylogenetic relationships among the species of Hellenocarum and its close allies (Umbelliferae-Apioideae) were investigated using nuclear (ITS, ETS) and plastid (psbA-trnH intergenic spacer) DNA sequences. According to the molecular data, Hellenocarum is not monophyletic. In most molecular analyses, the genus comprises 2 disparate lineages, with each lineage supported by distinct morphological characters (e.g., structure of underground organs, shape of the umbel, petal color). The first lineage includes Hellenocarum multiflorum (the type …
