Objective: This research was designed to evaluate the polyphenolic content, antibacterial potency and antioxidant activity of extract and fractions from Laggera aurita L. (Asteraceae), a medicinal herbaceous from Burkina Faso. Methods: Folin ciocalteu and AlCl3 methods respectively were used for polyphenol contents. The antioxidant activities of the samples were evaluated by various in vitro assays like ferrous reducing antioxidant assay (FRAP), Total reducing power, 2, 2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging and ABTS radical cation decolorization assays. Peroxidase (POX), a biotechnologically important enzyme was purified from bulb of Ipomoea batatas and characterized for use in the bioconversion of phenolic compounds from industrial wastewater. Purified peroxidase (POXp) was obtained using the gel-filtration chromatography and anion exchange chromatography. A final yield of 18 % was obtained with 20.5 as purification fold. Electrophoresis on SDS-PAGE and native-PAGE showed that POXp is monomeric with a molecular weight of 44 kDa. The optimum pH and optimum temperature were respectively 6.0 and 45 ° C. Burkina Faso is a Sahelian West African country. Current population is about 16 millions and 43.9 % live below the poverty line. Burkina Faso is classified as both a least developed country and a low-income, food-deficit country. The nutritional quality is poor (1830 against 2000 Kcal/person/day). Food insecurity affects 50 % of households, and is increasing in the urban areas. However, Burkina Faso is one of the country that respect the 2003 Maputo’s declaration’s call to invest at least 10 percent of the budget in agriculture, in order to increase agricultural production and attain food self-sufficiency. The latest estimates of the FAO demonstrate the problems of the fight against hunger. These problems are manifested by the ever-increasing number of chronically undernourished people worldwide. Their numbers during the 1999-2001 period were estimated at about 840 million of which 798 million live in developing countries. Sub-Saharan Africa alone represented 198 million of those. In this part of Africa the prevalence of undernourishment ranges from 5-34%, causing growth retardation and insufficient weight gain among one third of the children under five years of age and resulting in a mortality of 5-15% among these children.
