Abstract

This is a revised version of a comprehensive treatment of the vascular flora of Utah. All new taxa and distributional records discovered since the publication of the second edition in 2003 are included.

Keys are provided to families, genera, species, and infraspecific taxa (when present). Taxa are described, ecological data is given, and geographical information is provided. County distribution in Utah is given for each species and infraspecific taxon. General geographical information is given for taxa that extend beyond the boundaries of Utah. Chromosome numbers are provided for each taxon, where that information was available in literature.

Abstract

This book details the author’s trips to Death Valley, along with general ecological information about the region. Explorations by other natural historians are also recounted. Death Valley and its surrounding mountain ranges are stark and appear to lack vegetative cover, but that appearance is deceiving. The ranges and valley support a great diversity of living things, both plants and animals. Pages 10–17 contain photographs of various landscapes. Pages 18–20 list the plant species collected in Death Valley, 1970–1983. Voucher specimens are available for study at Stanley L. Welsh Herbarium, Brigham Young University.

A comprehensive floristic study of Mt. Timpanogos, Utah County, Utah, was undertaken. The Mt. Timpanogos area is a much used facility in recreation, biology, watershed development, livestock management, and education. It is also representative of a major segment of the overall flora of Utah. This study adds to the ever-increading knowledge of the flora of Utah, and provides a means of identifying the flora of this region, which is basic to any future management.

A Revision Of The Astragalus Lentiginosus Complex For The State Of Utah, Carol Susan Schoener

The taxonomy and distribution of the Astragalus lentiginosus complex in Utah is presented. The nine varieties are listed and a key is provided which allows determination of the members of the complex in Utah. Each entity is discussed and illustrated. Two distribtuion maps are included for each variety, one showing the distribution in Utah and the other, the general range of the entity. The body of this work is based on the study of herbarium specimens and field observations and collection. These studies have resulted in the synonymizing of two varieties, the inclusion of another and one nomenclatural change.

A Flora From The Dakota Sandstone Formation Near Westwater, Grand County, Utah, Samuel R. Rushforth

A cretaceous (Cenomanian) flora from the Dakota Sandstone Formation near Westwater, Grand County, Utah contains an admixture of ferns and angiosperms. The ferns of this flora are representative of an older Jurassic-Wealden vegetational type, whereas the angiosperms are typical of the modern vegetational type. Species of Gleichenia and Matonidium and Astralopteris coloradica represent the dominant forms in this flora. The Westwater flora contains fourteen genera including nineteen species and one variety. New species described from this flora include Asplenium dakotensis, Coniopteris westwaterensis and Ilex serrata.

The National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS) is located along the western edge of the upper Snake River Plain in southeastern Idaho. The area covered in this study comprises 894 square miles of rolling to broken land. The plain is broken by three large buttes, all volcanic in nature. The Snake River Plain was formed by the interbedding of volcanic rocks, lake, and alluvial deposits. The alluvial deposits are Quaternary in age as are the basalt flows, and the three buttes are middle Teritary. The vegetation is semi-desert and belongs to the northern desert shrub biome. This vegetational analysis is concerned with changes which have cocurred since 1949 in a mountain brush community within an exclosure in the central Wasatch Mountains. The exclosure, established in 1949, is located in Pole Canyon on lower Provo Canyon. Two major studies have been conducted previously, but it has been nine years since the last intensive work was done. Several major changes occurring during the eighteen year period are evident and are described.

A taxonomic and ecological survey of the algae of Lilly Lake in the Uinta Mountains, Utah, was carried on from June 1967 to November 1967. The lake is a typical acid bog lake with an average pH range of 4.5 to 6.9. Extremes of pH in the alkaline range were present due to additional factors. Algae identified included 96 genera and 208 species. These were found in many different types of microenvironmental niches. The main factors which limited the algae to definite areas of the lake were pH, water temperature, light available, and type of substrate. The predominant algal genera …

The ecological life history of budsage (Artemisia spinescens D.C. Eaton) was investigated during 1963 and 1964. The field studies were conducted at the Desert Experimental Range in Millard County, Utah. Laboratory studies were done at Brigham Young University. The different community types in which budsage grows were described and the physical site factors, viz. climate, soil texture, total soluble salts, hydrogen ion concentration of the soil, carbonate content and soil moisture were investigated. An understanding of the interactions betnen vegetation and livestock grazing is of paramount importance to the welfare of the livestock industry. It is also important to know how these interactions affect the balance of the ecosystem. In general, observations of changes in vegetation provide an index for evaluating such interactions. Vegetation change is the main object of consideration in this paper. The study is concerned with some of the oldest pemanent native vegetation study plots in the Western United States. They are located on Horseshoe Flats of the Wasatch Plateau in Central Utah.

A general survey of the vegetational changes of the rangelands of the Uinta Basin was made using historical records, documents, interviews, and recent vegetational surveys. Historical vegetatienal information about the Uinta Basin is very limited, most of it pertaining to the vegetation along the streams and rivers. Escalante, in 1776, mentioned the splendid groves of cottonwoods, the fine pastures, and the abundance of game along the rivers. Ashley in 1825 and Powell in 1870 entered the Basin via the Green River. Ashley crossed the Basin following the Duchesne River and its tributary the Strawberry River. He described the groves of …

This is a comparative study of the vegetation and soils of an exclosure in the mountain brush vegetation of the Wasatch Mountains, Utah. The exclosure was fenced and initially analyzed during the summers of 1949-1950. The study area is located in Pole Canyon in the Uinta National Forest, a few miles northeast of Provo, Utah. The dominant woody species of the vegetation in the exclosure are big toothed maple (Acer grandidentatum) and Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii). After settlement of the area in and around Provo, Pole Canyon became overgrazed by livestock. Since 1949 the area has been protected from grazing. …

The material compiled here is the result of searching through all available sources such as government reports of geological explorations, private diaries of explorers and pioneers , contemporary magazines, books and newspapers .
