Herder Mental Stocking Rate In The Rangeland Regions Of Northern China, Yanting Yin, Xiangyang Hou, David L. Michalk, Xiangjun Yun, Yong Ding, Xiliang Li, Jizhou Ren
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
In 2002, the Chinese government issued the “balancing animals and grass” policy to control the degradation problem of northern China, but these programs have been widely resisted by herders. We proposed that herder had their mental stocking rate, which refers to the number of animals that the herders think they can place or maintain on a piece of rangeland over a specified period of time. It is the mental stocking rate that guides herder on how to adjust livestock-breeding practices. This study surveyed herder opinion of grass-animal balance in the meadow steppe, typical steppe and desert steppe regions of northern …

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Overgrazing is a universal phenomenon on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, which results in 90% of the alpine meadow grassland being degraded (Gao and Hou 2011). As well, animal productivity of the grassland is becoming lower because of the yearly continuous grazing. Improved grazing management will play a key role in the sustainable use of alpine meadow grasslands.
Unpalatable Perennial Grass Invasion In Central-East Argentina Native Grasslands: Processes, Implications And Recovery, Roberto A. Distel
Unpalatable Perennial Grass Invasion In Central-East Argentina Native Grasslands: Processes, Implications And Recovery, Roberto A. Distel
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
In temperate semiarid central-east Argentina, unpalatable perennial grasses (UPG) have been steadily invading native grasslands formerly dominated by palatable perennial grasses (PPG). The objective of this contribution is to provide a synthesis of underlying processes and implications of UPG invasion, as well as recovery strategies. Results have shown that heavy selective grazing on PPG reduces their superior competitive ability. Gaps formed due to reduced competition by PPG provide safe sites for UPG establishment. The development of large, long-lived tussock of UPG, in combination with high standing crop accumulation, impairs PPG establishment even in absence of grazing. UPG produce sclerophyllous tissues, …
Effect Of Overgrazing And Enclosure On Ecosystem Functioning And Biological Capacity In The Typical Steppe, Xiangyang Hou, Zhen Wang
Effect Of Overgrazing And Enclosure On Ecosystem Functioning And Biological Capacity In The Typical Steppe, Xiangyang Hou, Zhen Wang
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Overgrazing is one of the most important human-induced causes for arid and semi-arid grassland degradation, which can result in widespread deterioration of biodiversity, ecosystem services and destroys soil structure (Louhaichi et al. 2012). Overgrazing is likely to reduce a plant’s individual aboveground biomass (AB) directly through influence on the phenotype plasticity of different traits and indirectly through the allometric relationships among plant that can have impacts on grassland productivity and biodiversity. Grazing can reduced nutrient cycling by inhibiting the growth of palatable and nutrient-rich species with high litter quality and promoting the dominance of those nutrient-poor or chemically defended …

Identifying Grazing-Driven Plant Indicators Of Rangeland Degradation In Semi Arid Zones Of Uzbekistan, Toshpulot F. Rajabov, Bakhtiyor K. Mardonov, Mahmud A. Muminov
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The development of practical indicators of vegetation degradation is an important element in predicting and assessing rangeland health due to disturbances such as livestock grazing. Once established, phytoindicators provide a simple and visual operative way to diagnose active and possibly undesirable vegetation changes. This paper aimed to identify rapid, yet realistic and easily communicated plant indicators of rangeland degradation caused by intense grazing. The grazing gradient approach is applied to study plant traits affected by increased levels of grazing pressure. Qualitative and quantitative changes in key species of the plant community alongside successive changes of vegetation attributes along an apparent …
