Taxonomic Relationships Of Established Plant Species In The Conterminous United States, Daniel Buonaiuto, Annette Evans, Mathew Fertakos, William Pfadenhauer, Justin Salva, Bethany Bradley

Data and Datasets

Invasion status of non-native vascular plants established in the conterminous United States and their phylogenetic relationships to other invaders at multiple taxonomic resolutions.

Does Invasion Science Encompass The Invaded Range? A Comparison Of The Geographies Of Invasion Science Versus Management In The U.S., Lara Munro Dec 2020

Does Invasion Science Encompass The Invaded Range? A Comparison Of The Geographies Of Invasion Science Versus Management In The U.S., Lara Munro

Masters Theses

Biases in invasion science lead to a taxonomic focus on plants, particularly a subset of well-studied plants, and a geographic focus on invasions in Europe and North America. Geographic biases could also cause some branches of invasion science to focus on a subset of environmental conditions in the invaded range, potentially leading to an incomplete understanding of the ecology and management of plant invasions. While broader, country-level geographic biases are well known, it is unclear whether these biases extend to a finer scale and thus affect research within the invaded range. This study assessed whether research sites for ten well-studied …

Arboriculture Safety Around The World, Jamie Lim Oct 2019

Arboriculture Safety Around The World, Jamie Lim

Masters Theses

Arboricultural work is inherently dangerous, with more serious injuries and fatalities than most other professions. Safety standards exist in some jurisdictions, but it is unclear how many standards exist, how they compare to one another, and whether (and how many) jurisdictions share standards. To establish a baseline understanding of these issues, my objectives were to (i) develop a database of existing standards, (ii) identify the most frequently occurring safety topics and (iii) describe similarities and differences in safety topics among standards from different countries. I worked with a variety of contacts and traditional university library resources to identify, obtain, analyze, …

Plants, Parasites, And Pollinators: The Effects Of Medicinal Pollens On A Common Gut Parasite In Bumble Bees, George Locascio Oct 2018

Plants, Parasites, And Pollinators: The Effects Of Medicinal Pollens On A Common Gut Parasite In Bumble Bees, George Locascio

Masters Theses

Declines in several pollinator species are due to a variety of factors, including pathogens. Incorporating pollinator-friendly plant species into wild and agricultural habitats could reduce the stress of pathogens if food sources act medicinally against pathogens. Previous research demonstrated one domesticated sunflower cultivar (Helianthus annuus) can dramatically reduce a gut pathogen (Crithidia bombi) of the common eastern bumble bee, Bombus impatiens. To ascertain the breadth of this medicinal trait, we tested whether pollen from several H. annuus cultivars and four relatives could also reduce C. bombi infections in B. impatiens. We also investigated whether …

Increasing Nutrient Density Of Food Crops Through Soil Fertility Management And Cultivar Selection, Md. J. Meagy Apr 2014

Increasing Nutrient Density Of Food Crops Through Soil Fertility Management And Cultivar Selection, Md. J. Meagy

Doctoral Dissertations

The mineral nutrient density of vegetables has fallen in the past fifty years. As a result, some people are suffering chronic diseases due to shortage of mineral elements in these foods. The causes of this decline in nutritive value of vegetables have been attributed to a depletion of soil fertility and to a decrease in nutrient concentration in modern cultivars of vegetables. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is the most widely used leafy vegetable around the world. Research is needed to develop a nutrient content of lettuce that was help to supply adequate mineral nutrition to people. The objectives of …

Purification And Characterization Of Novel Nucleases From A Thermophilic Fungus, Kyle S. Landry Jan 2012

Purification And Characterization Of Novel Nucleases From A Thermophilic Fungus, Kyle S. Landry

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

A thermophilic fungus was isolated from composted horse manure. The organism was as a Chaetomium sp. by sequencing the highly conserved ITS region of the fungus and comparing to known regions in a genomic database and was referred to as TM-417. TM-417 was found to have an optimal growth temperature of 45 oC and an optimal pH of 7.0. An extracellular DNase and RNase was found to be produced by the isolate and were purified 145.58-fold and 127.6-fold respectively using a combination of size exclusion chromatography and a novel affinity membrane purification system. The extent of purification was determined …

Development Of A Cytosolic Ph Reporter For Tobacco By2 Cells, Michael E. Urbanowski Jan 2012

Development Of A Cytosolic Ph Reporter For Tobacco By2 Cells, Michael E. Urbanowski

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

The regulation of pH is a critical homeostatic function of plant cells. In addition to acting as the primary cationic species responsible for energizing the plasma membrane, protons likely act as an important regulator and messenger. Despite this importance, few studies have thoroughly described cytosolic pH patterns as the plant cell progresses through the cell cycle. To investigate pH in plant cells, I chose Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) Bright Yellow-2 (BY-2) cells as a model system. My research has two aims. First, I will measure and report the interphase cytosolic pH of BY-2 cells. Next, I will assay the cytosolic pH …

Use Of Short-Term Floods As An Additional Management Strategy For Controlling Dodder (Cuscuta Gronovii Willd.) In Commercial Cranberry Production, James M. O'Connell Jan 2010

Use Of Short-Term Floods As An Additional Management Strategy For Controlling Dodder (Cuscuta Gronovii Willd.) In Commercial Cranberry Production, James M. O'Connell

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

Dodder (Cuscuta gronovii Willd.) is a weed of serious concern to cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) growers. It develops vigorously and has a long-lived seed bank. Cranberries are a perennial crop and therefore strategies available to growers of annual crops are not practical. Herbicides, the primary management tool for dodder, although effective, have a narrow window of application and extended seedling emergence after applications can result in escapes. This project examined the effect of water temperature on dodder seed germination and the use of short-term floods (less than 72 hr) for dodder management.

Experiments investigated the effect of water temperature on …
