Phosphorus And Nitrate Loss From Horticulture On The Swan Coastal Plain, Neil Clifton Lantzke
Phosphorus And Nitrate Loss From Horticulture On The Swan Coastal Plain, Neil Clifton Lantzke
Agriculture reports
(En) The extent of nutrient loss from nine horticultural properties located on the sandy soils of the Swan Coastal Plain was examined. On three of the properties phosphorus (P) loss was measured by monitoring nutrient loads in shallow drains. On the other six properties networks of monitoring bores were installed and both P and nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) concentrations were monitored. All of the properties except one were located on the low phosphate fixing Bassendean sands. The level of nutrient loss was depend l production areas. High to very high N03-N concentrations were found in the shallow groundwater beneath the production …

Research Reports and Research Bulletins
There has been growing interest among nations in the western hemisphere in preferential trading arrangements (Taylor et al., 1995; Schuh and Junguita, 1993). Since 1990, 33 regional agreements have been registered with the World Trade Organization — the supranational organization that sets the rules for international trade (Blandford, 1995). One of the most important of these trading arrangements is the Mercado Comun del Sur (Common Market of the South), commonly referred to by its acronym, the MERCOSUR. (See Table 1 for a definition of acronyms and technical terms.) The MERCOSUR is a customs union whose member nations are Argentina, Brazil, …

Comparison Of Sampling Methods Used To Estimate Spider (Araneae) Species Abundance And Composition In Grape Vineyards, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane
Comparison Of Sampling Methods Used To Estimate Spider (Araneae) Species Abundance And Composition In Grape Vineyards, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane
Horticulture and Crop Science
The effectiveness of 3 methods for sampling spiders in grape vineyards was tested. The sampling methods were as follows: (1) a drop-cloth method in which spiders were dislodged from a 5.1-m2 area of grapevine onto a drop cloth, (2) a funnel method in which spiders were dislodged into a 0.74-m2 funnel, and (3) a D-vac method in which 50 sections of grapevine (30-cm sections, total area of 5.4 m2) were suctioned with a gasoline-powered vacuum. Data from all sampling methods were adjusted for area sampled and compared with an absolute control, in which foliage from an entire vine was removed …

Yield, Earliness And Fiber Strength Of Blends Of Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) Cultivars, J. S. Mcconnell, F. M. Bourland, W. H. Baker, B. S. Frizzell
Research Reports and Research Bulletins
Pricing of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) has been determined primarily by fiber length and grade, which were manually determined. Implementation of the high volume instrument (HVI) cotton classing system in 1991 allowed other fiber quality parameters to be objectively and rapidly measured (Deussen, 1989). One quality parameter added to the pricing structure by the advent of HVI in determining the value of ginned lint is fiber strength (Table 1). Open-end spinning, a new technology being utilized by the textile industry, requires high-strength cotton fibers (>25 g/tex) for manufacture of yarns. As this technology becomes more widely used, cotton with …

Revision Of The Cerrado Hemicryptophytic Chamaesyce Of Boissier's "Pleiadeniae" (Euphorbiaceae), Mark P. Simmons, W. John Hayden
Biology Faculty Publications
The species of Chamaesyce classified by Boissier as the "Pleiadeniae'" are revised in light of presently available collections. Six species are accepted and new combinations are proposed for C. nana, C. setosa, C. tamanduana, and C. viscoides. Although these herbaceous perennials of cerrado vegetation of Brazil, northern Argentina, and adjacent countries are distinctive ecologically and geographically, cladistic analysis does not support their recognition as a monophyletic group.

Brushing Pansy (Viola Tricolor L.) Transplants: A Flexible, Effective Method For Controlling Plant Size, Lauren C. Garner, F. A. Langton
Horticulture and Crop Science
Though brushing is an effective method for controlling excessive elongation in many species, its adoption by the commercial plug transplant industry will depend on the ease and flexibility of its application. Brushing was applied to pansy (Viola tricolor L.) seedlings growing at a density of 1500 plants m-2 by daily stroking with 20/20 gauge netting. In dose response experiments, final petiole length appeared to approach a lower asymptote as number of brush strokes increased, and the number of strokes required to give near full reduction in length increased under environmental conditions favouring extension growth. Ten or 20 daily …

Identification Of Poinsettia Cultivars Using Rapd Markers, Jing-Tian Ling, Roger Sauve, Nick Gawel
Identification Of Poinsettia Cultivars Using Rapd Markers, Jing-Tian Ling, Roger Sauve, Nick Gawel
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) techniques were used to compare the DNA from leaf tissues of nine commercial poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima Wild ex Klotzsch) cultivars. Amplification occurred in 57 out of 60 (95%) tested primers. Nine primers that revealed polymorphisms among cultivars were selected for further evaluation. Forty-eight RAPD bands were scored from these primers, and 33 (69%) were polymorphic. All tested cultivars could be discriminated with seven bands generated from primers OPB7 and OPC13. Results of a UPGMA cluster analysis and principal components analysis placed the nine cultivars into two groups: one group consisted of `Jingle Bells', `Supjibi', …

Horticulture and Crop Science
Searching and ovipositional behaviors by female Eretmocems sp. nr. californicus Howard on Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring infesting velvetleaf, Abutilon theophrasti Medic. (Malavaceae), and telegraph weed, Heterotheca grandiflora Nutt. (Asteraceae), were quantified. Adult female behaviors were described and quantified for E. sp. nr. californicus to establish a behavioral time budget analysis. Females departed from leaves of A. theophrasti in 83.3% of the trials, and of those that remained and searched for hosts, walking speeds averaged 0.29 mm/s. Females departed from the leaves of H. grandiflora in 44.4% of the trials, and those remaining readily searched for whitefly hosts with walking …

Notes: Forage Yield, Quality, And Fertility Of Sorghum X Sudan Grass Hybrids In A1 And A3 Cytoplasm, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, J. J. Toy
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Currently, no information is available comparing the agronomic performance of A1 and A3 cytoplasms in sorghum x sudangrass [Sorghumbi color (L.) Moench] hybrids. The objectives of this study were to compare the effects of A1 and A3 cytoplasm on the maturity, fertility, height, forage yield, and forage quality of sorghum × sudangrass hybrids. In 1989, pollen from a bulk of eight sudangrass populations was used to pollinate four sorghum lines that had been male-sterilized in both A1 and A3 cytoplasm. Hybrids were grown at the Univ. of Nebraska Field Laboratory Ithaca, NE, in 1990 and 1991, in a split-plot …

Molecular And Functional Characterization Of A Novel Low-Affinity Cation Transporter (Lct1) In Higher Plants, Daniel P. Schachtman, Raman Kumar, Julian I. Schroeder, Ellen L. Marsh
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The transport of cations across membranes in higher plants plays an essential role in many physiological processes including mineral nutrition, cell expansion, and the transduction of environmental signals. In higher plants the coordinated expression of transport mechanisms is essential for specialized cellular processes and for adaptation to variable environmental conditions. To understand the molecular basis of cation transport in plant roots, a Triticum aestivum cDNA library was used to complement a yeast mutant deficient in potassium (K+) uptake. Two genes were cloned that complemented the mutant: HKT1 and a novel cDNA described in this report encoding a cation …

Soil Temperature And Fumigation Effects On Plant Phosphorus Uptake And Related Microbial Properties, Dennis L. Mccallister, L. A. Jawson, M. D. Jawson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Early season problems with growth of corn (Zea mays L.) under cool, wet conditions prompted a study of the effects of soil and environmental conditions on mineralization and plant uptake of phosphorus (P). Our objective was to determine the effect of soil test P, temperature, and soil fumigation on soil P availability and uptake during early corn growth. Corn was grown in growth chambers at temperatures of 14°C or 25°C. Soils were a high-P Hastings silty clay loam (fine, montmorillonitic, mesic Udic Argiustoll) and a low-P Sharpsburg clay loam (fine, montmorillonitic, mesic Typic Argiudoll). Plants grew for up to …
