The research presented here describes a set of three different experiments that sought to establish appropriate management practices for hairy vetch in Maine, and to determine whether variability for winter hardiness exists among germplasm available commercially or from gene banks. Specific objectives of the first experiment were to evaluate effects of planting date and companion crop on crop and weed dry weight and total above-ground N content, at two sites differing in drainage. In a second experiment, the winter hardiness of hairy vetch from six commercial sources and the effect of a rye companion crop on hardiness were evaluated. In …

Tennessee’s climate is well suited for the production of high-quality, lowprotein, soft red winter wheat. This wheat is in demand by the flour milling industry and well-established local markets are adequate.
Tennessee-produced soft wheat is used primarily for milling general purpose or family flours, pastry flours and cake flours. Very little of Tennessee’s wheat is used for livestock feed, except as byproducts of the milling industry.
Winter wheat is a cool-season crop and can be grown successfully in all counties of the state. Soft red winter wheat varieties recommended and commonly grown in Tennessee have adequate winter hardiness to survive …

Field & Commercial Crops
Voles have historically been a problem for farmers using minimum and no-till technologies to establish field corn. As land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is returned to row crops, this problem is expected to increase. Retaining established cover by no-till farming decreases erosion, improves water quality, increases wildlife habitat and conserves moisture when compared to conventional tillage practices. However, voles that have established colonies and flourished beneath the cover established under CRP, crop residue or hay crops can devastate crop plantings. Stand reductions of 80-100 percent have been reported in no-till corn where vole numbers are high.

Because of the importance of such factors as appearance and vigor in turf management, genetic selection of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) is often conducted at high levels of N application. This process can mask potential differences between genotypes in N efficiency, especially under low N levels. The case is also made that because soil is the medium in which plant selections ultimately must perform, cultivar screening for N efficiency in solution culture should relate to results in soil. Grain legumes are the harvested seed of leguminous crops, typically peas, beans and their close relatives within the Fabaceae. Another term for many of these crops is pulses. In Australia, generally grain legumes are referred to as pulses. The term pulse is derived from the Latin puls meaning that the seed or grain can be made into a thick soup or pottage. The term pulse is most commonly associated with the food legumes whereas grain legumes are mostly associated with the feed industry. The terms are interchangeable, but with few exceptions (notably chickpeas, lentils and mung beans), the majority of …

There has been growing interest among nations in the western hemisphere in preferential trading arrangements (Taylor et al., 1995; Schuh and Junguita, 1993). Since 1990, 33 regional agreements have been registered with the World Trade Organization — the supranational organization that sets the rules for international trade (Blandford, 1995). One of the most important of these trading arrangements is the Mercado Comun del Sur (Common Market of the South), commonly referred to by its acronym, the MERCOSUR. In June 1996, several of us had the opportunity to see sorghum ergot in Brazil and the damage that the disease can do. We saw severe damage in seed production plots and witnessed the pain that seed producers had to go through to deal with this new problem. There was a wide spread scare in the sorghum community in the Americas because of the infamous reputation of the disease in causing damage in seed production fields. Pricing of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) has been determined primarily by fiber length and grade, which were manually determined. Implementation of the high volume instrument (HVI) cotton classing system in 1991 allowed other fiber quality parameters to be objectively and rapidly measured (Deussen, 1989). One quality parameter added to the pricing structure by the advent of HVI in determining the value of ginned lint is fiber strength (Table 1). Open-end spinning, a new technology being utilized by the textile industry, requires high-strength cotton fibers (>25 g/tex) for manufacture of yarns. Monthly plantings of the rice variety Bouaké 189 were made under lowland irrigated conditions, to obtain information on the phenological and seasonal occurrence of pests and diseases on the West African Rice Development Association (WARDA) research farm near Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire. Regular sampling of insect pests and observations on rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) disease infection throughout the year provided information on the occurrence of RYMV and potential insect vectors. RYMV incidence and grain yields varied depending on planting date, and for a given planting date, varied from one year to another. There was no evidence that RYMV incidence increases …

Tobacco producers are always interested in new tobacco varieties, and are continually searching for the "best" variety. Producers receive information about varieties from a number of sources including; research and extension publications, county extension agents, neighbors, farm supply workers, and seed producers. To help producers evaluate varieties, county agents in cooperation with tobacco specialists conduct many burley tobacco variety trials at the county level.

Burley tobacco removes large amounts of potassium (K) from soil. A 2,600 pound/A cured leaf crop removes around 200 lbs K/A/yr, with about 110 lbs of that in the leaf and 90 lbs in the stalk. Because of such a heavy soil demand for K, growers are always concerned that application of fertilizer K be sufficient for top production. The University of Kentucky's Soil Testing Laboratory (Division of Regulatory Services) provides a statewide soil testing service. The Mehlich-3 soil extractant is used by the UK lab, and soil test K values from use of this extractant (reported as lbs K/A) …
