Despite widespread recognition of schools' role in the healthy development of youth, surprisingly little research has examined the relationships between schools' overall functioning and the health‐related behavior of students. School functioning could become an important predictor of students' health‐related behavior and may be amenable to intervention. This paper describes the development and testing of the School Functioning Index (SFI) as a first step in investigating this question. The index was developed for use with middle schools and conceived as a predictor of students' violent behavior, with the potential for extending research applications to additional health and social behaviors. Escherichia coli isolates (72 commensal and 10 O157:H7 isolates) were compared with regard to physiological and growth parameters related to their ability to survive and persist in the gastrointestinal tract and found to be similar. We propose that nonhuman hosts in E. coli O157:H7 strains function similarly to other E. coli strains in regard to attributes relevant to gastrointestinal colonization.

The use of ocean observatories is expanding with the potential for collecting serial data with high temporal resolution at multiple sites within an ecosystem. Integration of underwater video cameras in observatory systems allow observation of vagile species and are useful tools for observing variations in behavior over time. In order to assess the utility of using video records for time series behavioral data I analyzed video records from an observatory site in the South Atlantic Bight (SAB) off the Coast of Georgia collected during the month of November in 2000, 2002 and 2004. Drug release and its relationship with kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of drug sorption onto biodegradable and biocompatible fibers made of polylactic acid (PLA), starch acetate (SA), wheat gluten (WG) and soy protein (SP) have been studied using Diclofenac, 5 Fluorouracil (5-Fu) and Metformin as drug models. To understand drug release from these four fibers using sorption, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters, such as the diffusion coefficient, activation energy for diffusion, affinity, and sorption enthalpy and entropy, have been investigated. Two years ago on a Saturday morning, I was asked quite pointedly by two friends how I could be both spiritual and a scientist. My questioning friends felt that these qualities were incompatible. It turned out their church taught that scientists were ‘the enemy’ because scientists believe in evolution. Since that time, Letters to the Editor regarding evolution have attracted my attention. Many of the published letters stated that the author did not believe in evolution, and argued in support of his/her position that God had created life. One animal beautifully adapted to the viscous asphalt of the La Brea tar pits is the oil fly Helaeomyia petrolei (Syn. Psilopa). As a normal part of its carnivorous existence the oil fly larval guts are filled with tar, with no adverse effects. Surface sterilized larvae 5 contained ca. 2 x 10 heterotrophic bacteria per larva. These bacteria have been identified as a mixture of enteric bacteria, most commonly Providencia rettgeri, and Acinetobacter spp. These bacteria were clearly growing because their numbers in the larval guts were 100 to 1,000 times greater than in free oil/asphalt. Anya v Strane chudes, young Nabokov’s 1923 Russian translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, contains an intentionally shifted statement “beheading first, sentence later” compared to Lewis Carroll’s “sentence first, verdict later”. The shift is fitting for the 1920s children émigré audience.
