Solutions To Soil Problems: V. Low Organic Matter, Kevin Heaton, Rich Koenig
All Current Publications
Utah soils are inherently low in organic matter due to the desert climate and historically low plant growth rates. In Utah, soil organic matter levels are typically 0.25 to 1%, while regions with high rainfall such as the Midwest and Eastern United States have soils with as much as 7 to 10% organic matter.

All Current Publications
Soil structure refers to the combination of primary soil particles – sand, silt and clay – into larger units called aggregates or clods. Aggregates are commonly seen when a soil is tilled or disturbed.

Analysis Of Anthropogenic Effects On Topsoil Throughout The California Polytechnic State University Campus In San Luis Obispo, Brooke L. Hamilton
Analysis Of Anthropogenic Effects On Topsoil Throughout The California Polytechnic State University Campus In San Luis Obispo, Brooke L. Hamilton
Earth and Soil Sciences
Soils reflect the health of a landscape, and in many cases carry the burden of anthropogenic activity, continually changing in characteristics such as pH, soil texture, soil structure, carbon:nitrogen ratios (C:N), and chemical composition. In a study sampling six different soils on the California Polytechnic State University campus in San Luis Obispo, these five soil characteristics were tested for and the results were determined. Soil samples consist of the top 5-10 cm of soil profiles, with sample sites varying according to degree of human contact; the locations the samples were taken from are as follows: (1) Walters Creek Ranch pasture, …
Fragaria Species Grown In A Greenhouse Cropping System Chemigated By Phosfite® And Bacillus® In Subsidence Of Phytophthora Fragariae And Verticillium Dahliae, Russell L. Morgan
Fragaria Species Grown In A Greenhouse Cropping System Chemigated By Phosfite® And Bacillus® In Subsidence Of Phytophthora Fragariae And Verticillium Dahliae, Russell L. Morgan
Earth and Soil Sciences
Strawberry yields depend directly on infestation of Phytophthora fragariae and Verticillium dahliae in correspondance to the use of Phosfite and Bacillus. The objective is to find understanding of newly administered techniques in prevention of Phytophthora fragariae and Verticillium dahliae and prohibiting the use of Methyl Bromide. Application of Phosfite and Bacillus on patented Fragariae species to identify utilization of P and ZN forms and their aid in prevention of Phytophthora and Verticillium species. In the Plots on the western bench the developmental symptoms of PRR disease were absent within all infested soil containers containing the FHS-1 crop. In the plots …
Solutions To Soil Problems: Iii. Drainage, Michael Johnson, Rich Koenig
Solutions To Soil Problems: Iii. Drainage, Michael Johnson, Rich Koenig
All Current Publications
Drainage is a common problem throughout Utah. Complex patterns of soil development, transport and deposition have resulted in excessively drained soils that are coarse-textured (sandy or rocky), and poorly drained soils that are fine-textured (silt and clay-dominated). Excessively drained are more common in higher elevation and bench areas.
Diversity Of Bacteria And Glycosyl Hydrolase Family 48 Genes In Cellulolytic Consortia Enriched From Thermophilic Biocompost, Javier A. Izquierdo, Maria V. Sizova, Lee R. Lynd
Diversity Of Bacteria And Glycosyl Hydrolase Family 48 Genes In Cellulolytic Consortia Enriched From Thermophilic Biocompost, Javier A. Izquierdo, Maria V. Sizova, Lee R. Lynd
Dartmouth Scholarship
The enrichment from nature of novel microbial communities with high cellulolytic activity is useful in the identification of novel organisms and novel functions that enhance the fundamental understanding of microbial cellulose degradation. In this work we identify predominant organisms in three cellulolytic enrichment cultures with thermophilic compost as an inoculum. Community structure based on 16S rRNA gene clone libraries featured extensive representation of clostridia from cluster III, with one cluster sharing as little as 73% sequence similarity with the closest known relative. In all, 14 new GHF48 gene sequences were added to the known diversity of 35 genes from cultured …
Effects Of Soil Temperature Regimes After Fire On Seed Dormancy And Germination In Six Australian Fabaceae Species, Victor Santana, Ross A. Bradstock, Mark Ooi, Andrew J. Denham, Tony D. Auld, M Baeza

In addition to direct fire cues such as heat, smoke and charred wood, the passage of fire leads indirectly to changes in environmental conditions which may be able to break physical dormancy in hard-coated seeds. After a fire, the open canopy and the burnt material lying on the surface alter the thermal properties of the soil, resulting in elevated soil temperatures for long periods of time. We simulated daily temperature regimes experienced at different depths of soil profile after a summer fire. Our aim was to determine whether these temperature regimes and the duration of exposure (5, 15 and 30 …

Pathogen Reduction Effects Of Solar Drying And Soil Application In Sewage Sludge, Nurtaç Öğleni̇, Sai̇m Özdemi̇r
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The responses of sludge faecal coliforms, Salmonella, and Ascaris lumbricoides to heat drying, solar dehydration, and inactivation in soil are examined in this study. The presence of Salmonella in raw sludge cake after treatment was low, and absent for most of the cases. Likewise, the viable Ascaris eggs were not determined because of absent or low prevalence. Faecal coliforms, on the other hand, drastically decreased from 4.2 × 10^7 MPN g^{-1} Dry Solid (DS) to absence by heat drying. Faecal coliform numbers in solar and non-solar drying treatments were not declined below 1.0 × 10^3 MPN g^{-1} after drying to …
