Germline Variants Associated With Cancer Predisposition And Bone Marrow Failure Are Common In Kmt2a-R Infant Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Patients, Sarah E. Mc Dermott

Research Days

Background: Infant acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), is a particularly aggressive subtype of leukemia with an early onset and unfavorable clinical outcome. Most (~70%) cases of infant ALL involve chromosomal rearrangement of KMT2A (KMT2A- r) on chromosome 11q23, the strongest independent predictor of a poor prognosis. To date, genomics studies have consistently demonstrated KMT2A-r infant ALL to have a strikingly silent landscape of DNA mutations. Germline mutations in cancer predisposition genes are found in 8.6% of pediatric malignancies and 4.4% of pediatric leukemias, compared to 1.1% in persons in the 1000 Genomes Project.

Objectives/Goal: We hypothesized that germline variants may contribute …

Activation Of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Signaling In Human Trophoblasts Alters Markers Of Growth And Differentiation, Asmaa Alsousi May 2021

Activation Of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Signaling In Human Trophoblasts Alters Markers Of Growth And Differentiation, Asmaa Alsousi

Research Days

Background: It is estimated that 1.7% of pregnant women smoke during their pregnancy globally, with the highest levels observed in Europe at 8.1%, and lowest in Africa at 0.8. The association of maternal cigarette smoking with increased risk of poor birth outcomes such as preterm birth, congenital anomalies, and neonatal mortality is well-established. In addition, evidence suggests that intrauterine exposure to maternal smoking impacts the risk of developing diseases later in life; however, we still do not understand the exact mechanism(s) leading to these outcomes. Once components of cigarette smoke (CS) cross the placenta and enter the fetal compartment, several …

Predicting Propofol-Induced Burst Suppression Using An Individualized Model-Based Approach Over Repeated Treatments, Jason C. Huang May 2021

Predicting Propofol-Induced Burst Suppression Using An Individualized Model-Based Approach Over Repeated Treatments, Jason C. Huang

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Our group is investigating the antidepressant effects of high-dose propofol, but dosing propofol to induce standardized changes in EEG activity (“burst suppression”) is challenging due to limited knowledge of each subject’s pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD). In this paper, we approximated PK-PD models for propofol-induced burst suppression (PIBS), based on multiple subjects over repeated treatments. We then applied these models to predict BSR in each subject’s repeated treatment, then evaluate their predictive performances. We hypothesized that predicting BSR from a greater number of previous treatments would improve performance, but our current results are not conclusive enough to validate the hypothesis. …

Importance Of Understanding Genetic Predisposition, Andrew Carter Apr 2021

Importance Of Understanding Genetic Predisposition, Andrew Carter

Thinking Matters Symposium

Hypersensitivity reactions can be sudden and are often fatal. Many of these reactions occur as a result of allergies to prescribed medication. Adverse drug reactions or (ADR’s) were show in a recent study to affect over 6% of hospitalized patients and resulted in over 100,000 deaths a year in the US alone. This poster will review the importance of understanding genetic predisposition, through articles about possible genetic causes of allergies to penicillin and other beta-lactams. Changes in a specific HLA gene located on chromosome 6 showed a correlation to penicillin reactions in over 600,000 participants. Another study found a conclusive …

Perivascular Adipose Tissue In Relation To Diet, Thermogenesis And Cardiovascular Health, Ginger Paquette, Caitlin Stieber, Ashely Soucy, Benjamin Tero, Lucy Liaw Apr 2021

Perivascular Adipose Tissue In Relation To Diet, Thermogenesis And Cardiovascular Health, Ginger Paquette, Caitlin Stieber, Ashely Soucy, Benjamin Tero, Lucy Liaw

Thinking Matters Symposium

Adipose tissue is a diverse and crucial component to vascular health due to its role in energy storage and heat production. The primary function of white adipose tissue (WAT) is energy storage while the function of mitochondria-rich brown adipose tissue (BAT) is heat production. Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT), which surrounds blood vessels, contains both WAT and BAT adipocytes. Dietary calorie restriction is associated with increased lifespan with decreased adiposity. Increased prevalence of WAT-like PVAT, due to high-fat diets and obesity, leads to increased metabolic disfunction and cardiovascular-disease. We used a calorie-restriction model in C57BL6/J mice to test the hypothesis that …

Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Preeclampsia is a life-threatening, pregnancy-associated disorder characterized by the rapid development of hypertension with renal dysfunction. While preeclampsia generally occurs later in pregnancy, early-onset preeclampsia (EOPE) can occur much earlier and is usually more devastating. Early-onset preeclampsia is also associated with an increased risk of maternal cardiovascular and metabolic disease in mothers later in life and neurocognitive dysfunction in their offspring. EOPE is strongly associated with abnormal placental development and fetal growth restriction during pregnancy.

Measuring The Decrement Times Of Volatile Anesthetics In Drosophila Melanogaster Using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Jason Tolley Apr 2021

Measuring The Decrement Times Of Volatile Anesthetics In Drosophila Melanogaster Using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Jason Tolley

Scholar Week 2016 - present

Presentation Location: Warming House, Olivet Nazarene University

Abstract

Background

Model organisms are widely used in research, especially in the context of complex situations. One model organism that has been widely used is the common fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster (D. mel). D. mel are most commonly used in the context of genetics, but they have also been widely used in research focusing on general anesthetics. One value that has not been measured in D. mel, however, as it relates to general anesthetics, is the decrement times. This is what was the present research set out to determine. …

Pornography: Social, Emotional And Mental Implications Among Adolescents, William Kelly Canady Mar 2021

Pornography: Social, Emotional And Mental Implications Among Adolescents, William Kelly Canady

National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference

This presentation will explain the historical development of pornography. It will highlight four segments: 1- Porn’s impact on brain development of reward pathways, ultimately increasing the appetite for more porn. 2- Porn can be a false substitute for real intimacy, resulting in decreased sexual satisfaction with a real person and increased verbal and physical aggression. 3- Porn promotes sex trafficking, promotes multiple sex partners and reduced STD prevention. 4- A review of interventions available to assist clients in navigating a lifestyle away from pornography.

Opioid Use Disorder: The Timeline For Medication Assisted Therapy, Alexander Cristofori Jan 2021

Opioid Use Disorder: The Timeline For Medication Assisted Therapy, Alexander Cristofori

Capstone Showcase

Opioid Use Disorder is patterns of opioid use leading to withdrawal, giving up important life events in order to use opioids, and excessive time spent using opioids, to name a few diagnostic criteria. The clinical progression of the disorder involves periods of acute exacerbation and remission that are cyclic in nature. Treatment is most effective when it includes both pharmacological and psychosocial modalities, referred to as medication assisted therapy (MAT). Three drugs used commonly in MAT-based treatment for OUD from oldest to newest include Methadone, Buprenorphine-naloxone, and Naltrexone. Treatment program models that prioritize total abstinence from the addictive substance attached …
