The Landscape As A Unit For Rangeland Inventory In Arid And Semi-Arid Regions Of Iran (Case Studies: Touran Biosphere Reserve And Behkadaye Rajinia Development Project), Mansour Mesdaghi
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Severe land fragmentation, degradation, and pollution problems will force us to think about a rural community and research group in Iran to combine our experiences and skills to deal with the challenges of improving land use sustainability (Bosch at el.1995; Mesdaghi, 1993). Planning rangeland inventory requiring recognition of the ecological processes operating at different scales and their particular characteristics (Friedel and Laycock, 1995).
In ancient countries like Persia (Iran), past land use suggests that rangelands exploitation by local herders was co-adapted with natural environments (Nyerges, 1980; Mesdaghi, 1993). Iranian rangelands, however, were nationalized through the land reforming and the …

Grasslands occupy almost half of the terrestrial expanse of India ranging from coastal to alpine regions. Whyte (1958) defined ‘grassland as the land on which graminaceous species represent the dominance if not the exclusive vegetation’. Grasslands comprise the main source of fodder for the 500 million cattle population in the country besides providing habitat to several plant and animal species. But the grasslands are shrinking due to the pressure of intensive agriculture and urbanization not only in expanse but also in their biodiversity. In this context there is an urgent need to develop not only a policy towards a sustainable …

Distribution, Diversity And Utilization Of Haloxylon Salicornicum: A Rangeland Shrub Of Arid Regions, V. S. Rathore, J. P. Singh
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Livestock systems occupy ~ 30 % of the planet’s ice – free terrestrial area, contributes about 40 % to the agricultural GDP and directly supports the livelihoods of 600 million poor smallholder farmers in the developing world. Livestock play multiple roles (societal, economic and environmental) in the livelihoods of people in communities, especially the poor. Therefore the sustainable livestock production is an imperative to nutritional and livelihood security globally. Haloxylon salicornicum is an important rangeland shrub species of arid regions. The species possesses range of morphological, physiological and ecological adaptation to survive under water limiting, nutrient poor environmental conditions of …

Role Of Shrubs In Rangeland Based Livestock Production System In Western Rajasthan, India, J. P. Singh, V. S. Rathore, B. K. Mathur
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Rangeland covers ~ 51% of the terrestrial surface of the Earth, and supports half of the world‟s livestock. More than 80 % of forage consumed by domestic livestock is supplied by rangelands in Africa and Asia. Hot arid regions of India cover an area of 31.7 million hectares and out of which Rajasthan state constitutes ~ 61.8 % of the entire area. The crop production in this area is low, unstable and risky. Livestock sustains arid farming systems by virtue of their potential to reduce risk, alleviate poverty, important providers of nutrients and traction for growing crops in smallholder systems …

Vegetation Restoration Patterns After Rangeland Enclosure In Arid Tunisia, Khalil Mseddi, Ahmad Mohajja Al-Shammari, Hossain Sharif, Mohamed Chaieb
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
In Tunisia arid regions, the increase in the rural populat-ion density, (Le Floc’h et al. 1999) has intensified human pressure on natural resources through ‘‘disturbances’’ such as grazing and wood harvesting, land clearing and ploughing, which largely depend on the annual rainfall. About 10% of the steppe area has been taken over by agriculture, shrinking perennial plant cover and a highly degraded vegetation class (Hanafi and Jauffret 2008). This work assesses the vegetation restoration patterns on a protected agricultural field in Tunisian arid rangeland after 15 years of enclosure and protection against plowing.
Effect Of Growth Stage On The Macro Mineral Concentrations Of Forbs And Grasses In A Semi-Arid Region Of Sudan, Sahar Ezzat, Babo Fadlalla
Effect Of Growth Stage On The Macro Mineral Concentrations Of Forbs And Grasses In A Semi-Arid Region Of Sudan, Sahar Ezzat, Babo Fadlalla
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Ruminants grazing forages in severely mineral-deficient areas may be more restricted by this condition than by inadequacy of energy or protein. Mineral imbalances in soils and forages are responsible for low production and reproduction in grazing livestock. As grazing livestock are not usually offered mineral supplements apart from common salt, they depend upon forages for their requirements. However forages rarely fully satisfy all mineral requirements. Mineral intakes of livestock are influenced by the factors that determine the mineral content of plants and their seeds. The concentrations of minerals in plants depend largely on plant genotype, soil environment, climate and stage …
Land Use Intensification Effects On Soil C Dynamics In Subtropical Grazing Land Ecosystems, Maria L. Silveira, Sutie Xu, Julius Adewopo, Kanika S. Inglett
Land Use Intensification Effects On Soil C Dynamics In Subtropical Grazing Land Ecosystems, Maria L. Silveira, Sutie Xu, Julius Adewopo, Kanika S. Inglett
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
The impacts of land intensification on carbon (C) responses are important components of soil organic carbon (SOC) management. Grazing land intensification typically involves the use of highly productive plant species that can support greater grazing pressure, removal of higher proportions of site biomass and nutrients during mechanical harvest or grazing, and increased use of fertilizers, particularly N. Current improved grazing land management strategies are aimed at increasing above-ground biomass yield, with less regard for below-ground C dynamics. Because intensive management affects above- and below-ground C inputs (Schuman et al. 1999; Liu et al. 2011a,b), it can therefore have …

Management Effects On The Vegetation Of Rangeland In The Middle Of Southern Slope Of Tianshan Mountains, Linqiao Xi, Shuqi Wu, Hui Liu, Dong Wang, Chunhui Ma
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Rangeland degradation is a widespread problem and its restoration remains a major challenge. In recent years, many scientists have discussed the primary causes of over-grazing and approaches to restoration of China’s grasslands (e.g. Harris 2010; Wang and Han 2005; Lu et al. 2005). The major evidence of grassland degradation is lower plant productivity, reduced biodiversity and increase in poisonous weeds (Zhao et al. 2010), increased frequency of rodent and grasshopper infestations, and large scale dust storms (Lu et al. 2005). Restoration of these impacted ecosystems is an important and challenging task, especially in Xinjiang Province, China, …
Monitoring Landscape Changes Using Remote Sensing Technology In Southern Africa, Anthony R. Palmer
Monitoring Landscape Changes Using Remote Sensing Technology In Southern Africa, Anthony R. Palmer
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Rangelands are a major global resource, and there is an urgency to improve the assessment of landscape performance to capture carbon, produce biomass, and improve water use. Effective monitoring necessitates the collection of high quality rangeland condition data using repeatable techniques. Despite much effort, there are few comprehensive data sets that allow confident detection of landscape change. Data are lacking for several reasons, including high cost of data collection, conflicting methodologies, and loss of archival data. Satellite imagery provides the basis for trend and pattern analysis of rangeland in different conditions classes and this paper presents some examples of the …

Evaluating Rangeland's Grazing Capacity For Livestock And Wild Herbivores Using The Delta Diet Tool And Gis Technology, Sandra A. Santos, Arnaud L. J. Desbiez, Humberto L. Perotto-Baldivieso, Juliana M. Alvarez
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Rangelands are dynamic and complex systems requiring appropriate adaptive decision-making to calculate grazing capacity integrating livestock and herbivore wildlife. This work describes the development and application of an integrated framework using the microhistological analysis (DeltaDiet tool) to identify key forage used by different herbivores from the same area associated with GIS technology to mapping landscape containing forage productivity and quality information. This study was conducted in a management unit, representative of the Nhecolândia sub-region landscape, Pantanal. During the dry period, representative fecal samples were collected from cows, capybaras and deer grazing in the same management unit for diet analysis, using …
