Vintage Report 2019: North Willamette Valley, Gregory V. Jones Dec 2019

Vintage Report 2019: North Willamette Valley, Gregory V. Jones

Linfield University Wine Studies Reports

This report describes the impacts of climate and phenology on vintage for the North Willamette Valley in Oregon in 2019. A relatively mild early winter in 2018 was followed by a cold and wet second half of winter in 2019 and then a wet, but warm, spring. The growing season saw a few mild frosts during late April, but started off warmer than average, moderating through mid-vintage with fewer than average heat spikes. Near-record precipitation amounts during late June and early July brought increased disease pressure to the region. The vintage will be remembered for the early rains in September …

Prevalence Of Malaria Reported During Summer And Winter At A Tertiary Care Hospital In Karachi, Pakistan, Fazal M. Arain, Aisha Memon, Roohi Jamal, Ahmed Raheem Buksh, Mohammad Asim Beg

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

This study was designed to determine the prevalence and type of malaria cases that presented throughout the year 2014 in a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. A total of 1099 cases, (377 females, 722 males) were reported. Plasmodium vivax (P. vivax) was discovered in 93.7% cases compared to 6.3% Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum). Based on the highest and lowest weather temperatures, in summer (June, July and August) and in winter (December, January and February) were differentiated. The number of cases were greater during summer months compared to winter. Interestingly, the ratio of P. falciparum to P. vivax during winter …

Tracking Landscape-Scale Movements Of Snow Buntings And Weather-Driven Changes In Flock Composition During The Temperate Winter, Emily A. Mckinnon, Marie Pier Laplante, Oliver P. Love, Kevin C. Fraser, Stuart Mackenzie, François Vézina Sep 2019

Tracking Landscape-Scale Movements Of Snow Buntings And Weather-Driven Changes In Flock Composition During The Temperate Winter, Emily A. Mckinnon, Marie Pier Laplante, Oliver P. Love, Kevin C. Fraser, Stuart Mackenzie, François Vézina

Nomadic movements of migratory birds are difficult to study, as the scale is beyond the capabilities of hand-held telemetry (10 s of kms) but too fine-scale for long-range tracking devices like geolocators (50–100 km accuracy). Recent widespread installation of automated telemetry receiving stations allowed us, for the first time, to quantify and test predictions about within-winter movements of a presumed nomadic species, the Snow Bunting (Pletrophenax nivalis). We deployed coded radio-transmitters on 40 individual Snow Buntings during two winters (2015-16 and 2016-17) in southern Ontario, Canada, and tracked movements over a 300 by 300 km area with 69–77 active radio-receiving …

Nitrogen (N) fertilizer recommendation tools could be improved for estimating corn (Zea mays L.) N needs by incorporating site-specific soil and weather information. However, an evaluation of analytical methods is needed to determine the success of incorporating this information. The objectives of this research were to evaluate statistical and machine learning (ML) algorithms for utilizing soil and weather information for improving corn N recommendation tools. Eight algorithms [stepwise, ridge regression, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso), elastic net regression, principal component regression (PCR), partial least squares regression (PLSR), decision tree, and random forest] were evaluated using a dataset …

Evaluation Of Stabilized Fertilizer And Crop Canopy Sensors As Next-Generation Nitrogen Management Technologies In Irrigated Corn, Leonardo Mendes Bastos Feb 2019

Evaluation Of Stabilized Fertilizer And Crop Canopy Sensors As Next-Generation Nitrogen Management Technologies In Irrigated Corn, Leonardo Mendes Bastos

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Nitrogen (N) is often the most limiting nutrient to corn. Once applied to the field, N can be lost through different pathways, which contributes to low N use efficiency (NUE) by plants. Increases in NUE and decreases in N losses can be potentially achieved by using management options that allow a better synchrony between N supply and demand, such as stabilized fertilizers, and spatially-variable sensor-derived in-season N application. Three studies were conducted in order to assess the effects of different stabilized fertilizers and crop canopy sensors on irrigated corn yield. The first study evaluated the effect of urease inhibitor on …

Row Spacing Models, Imsa Fusion Jan 2019

Row Spacing Models, Imsa Fusion

An Epidemiological Approach to Addressing Food Insecurity

Objectives:

  • Identify multiple row spacing models used by soybean farmers and determine how these planting arrangements impact crop yield.
  • Explore how row spacing influences the amount of access that a plant has to the natural resources it needs to grow.
  • Recommend a row spacing model that considers overall yield, economic efficiency, and potential environmental threats for a hypothetical farmer.

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Winter wheat is susceptible to several fungal pathogens throughout the growing season and foliar fungicide application is one of the strategies used in the management of fungal diseases in winter wheat. However, for fungicides to be profitable, weather conditions conducive to fungal disease development should be present. To determine if winter wheat yield response to fungicide application at the flowering growth stage (Feekes 10.5.1) was related to the growing season precipitation, grain yield from fungicide treated plots was compared to non-treated plots for 19 to 30 hard red winter wheat cultivars planted at 8 site years from 2011 through 2015. …

The main ingredients of chocolate are usually cocoa powder, cocoa butter, and sugar. Both the powder and the butter are extracted from the beans of the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao L.). The cocoa butter represents the fat in the beans and possesses a unique fatty acid profile that results in chocolate’s characteristic texture and mouthfeel. Here, we used a linkage mapping population and phenotypic data of 3,292 samples from 420 progeny which led to the identification of 27 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for fatty acid composition and six QTLs for fat content. Progeny showed extensive variation in fat levels …
