This research report is based on the results of a mail survey of randomly selected South Dakota beef cow-calf operators undertaken during late 1991. The purpose of the survey was to determine the nature of management practices followed by the state's cow-calf producers and whether those practices differ by size and/or location of herd. Attention was given to producers' overall cowcalf, breeding, feeding, and health management practices.

A Study Of Kentucky’S Agricultural Performance Using Shift-Share Analysts, David Neal Cundiff

In this paper the theory that Kentucky has a comparative advantage in agricultural employment, when compared to the United States, is examined. In order to test this hypothesis, a dynamic shift-share analysis was conducted using the thirteen major economic sector of Kentucky over the period 1970 to 1989. The resulting regional shift components, or competitive components, give support to the theory that a comparative advantage for Kentucky in agriculture does exist. Annual regional shift components, as well as their dynamic counterpart, possess predominately positive values, indicating outperformance by Kentucky’s agricultural sector when compared to the United States economy as a …

The upper Great Plains and Mountain States of the United States use a substantial quantity of water. Primary uses are irrigation, domestic, and industrial. The amount of water used is increasing as population grows, as more users exercise water rights, as farmers implement the use of irrigation to reduce risk, and as the states' economies become more diverse. Within the Upper Midwest, there is both geographic and temporal variability of water supply, resulting in various degrees of scarcity relative to the quantities demanded. The allocation method for the available water must be appropriate for these variations.

Sustainable farming and reduced or low tillage are the technical and management innovations examined in the paper. A stratified survey of producers in a six county area of eastern South Dakota was conducted. The specific characteristics examined are operator age, education, gross income, percentage of rented land and cropping acres. The paper analysis the adopters and nonadopters of such technical and management innovations on the farm.

South Dakota's agricultural land values increased 3.4% in 1991, paced by strong increases in farmland values in the north central region. Farmland values declined slightly (-1.1%) in the southeast region, the only region with reported declines. Average agricultural land values (as of February 1, 1992) vary from $533 per acre in the southeast region, to $225 per acre in the central region to $95 per acre in northwest South Dakota. In a survey conducted three years ago by the staff of Pork '88, it was found that some of the major players in the pork industry, like Smithfield foods, for example, have either integrated into hog production or have all the requirements for vertical integration in place. The move toward internalizing the exchange process in the hog/pork sector through vertical integration has raised several questions ranging from its impact on prices and quantities to its impact on individual hog producers. The Suburban Rice Farmers: Economic And Cultural Change In Japan, Makoto Chiwaki

The world economic situation is forcing the Japanese government to initiate policies designed to make its rice farming industry more competitive on the world market. These new policies, along with the growth of Japan's urban areas, are causing certain stresses on the cultural institution called bunke among the part-time rice farmers in the Kaizuka region of Chiba City, Japan.

An ethnographic study of these farmers reveals that the farmers of the Kaizuka region have responded to recent changes differently from the farmers of other regions because of their cultural institutions and traditions.

Influence Of Water Supply On Farm Productivity In The North-Eastern Wheatbelt, E J. Hauck

In the area with reliable reticulated water supplies, average what yield, average wool production and average number of sheep per pastured hectare showed a positive correlation with annual rainfall in all but one year. By contrast, in the area served by on-farm water supplies only, average wheat yield and annual rainfall were strongly correlated, whereas average wool production and average number of sheep per pastured hectare showed a weaker correlation with annual rainfall. These correlations suggest tt on farms with a reliable water supply, livestock numbers have been adjusted annually to ensure optimum utilisation of available feed in all seasons.

The rural transportation system consists of a combination of modern, heavy farm machinery, trucks, and personal vehicles driven over earth, gravel and bituminous roads. These roads were often originally designed for use by horse and wagon. The evolution of transportation and agricultural technologies has changed the demands upon the road system and caused this mismatch between original road design and modern vehicles and equipment. Increased farm production and decreased farm numbers are reflected in fewer rural residents who make more trips and carry heavier loads.
