The Secondary Blood Vessel System Of Segmental Arteries And Dorsal Aorta In Blennius Pavo And Zosterisessor Ophiocephalus. Histology, Fine Structure And Sem Of Vascular Corrosion Casts., F. Lahnsteiner, A. Lametschwandtner, R. A. Patzner

Scanning Microscopy

The secondary blood vessel system of the segmental arteries and of the dorsal aorta of the teleost fish Blennius pavo and Zosterisessor ophiocephalus are examined by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and by scanning electron microscopy of appropriately processed tissue and of vascular corrosion casts. Dorsal, lateral and ventral segmental arteries and the caudal portions of the dorsal aorta have a secondary vessel system. The secondary vessels are formed by capillaries which arise from the proximal portions of the segmental arteries and from the caudal parts of the dorsal aorta. In Z. ophiocephalus these capillaries are strongly dilated at their …

Changes In The Esophageal Epithelium In Rabbits Treated By Cis-Dichlorodiammineplatinum As Studied By Electron Microscopy, M. Albertsson, C. -H. Hakansson, M. Palmegren Nov 1989

Changes In The Esophageal Epithelium In Rabbits Treated By Cis-Dichlorodiammineplatinum As Studied By Electron Microscopy, M. Albertsson, C. -H. Hakansson, M. Palmegren

Scanning Microscopy

The esophageal mucosa of the rabbit was investigated after a single dose of 5 mg Cis-Dichlorodiammineplatinum (Cis-DDP). Specimens were taken for scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and light microscopy. Examination was performed daily for 20 consecutive days. A cytotoxic effect was observed already the first day after injection with an intracellular oedema. Thereafter the height of the esophageal epithelium and the basal cell layer steadily decreased to a minimum day 11. This parallels the damaged microridges and an increased cell loss as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. At the end of the observation period the esophageal mucosa had completely …

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Small Intestine Mucosa In Children With Celiac Disease After Long-Term Dietary Treatment, M. Morroni, A. Sbarbati, G. D'Angelo, C. Catassi, P. L. Giorgi, S. Cinti Nov 1989

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Small Intestine Mucosa In Children With Celiac Disease After Long-Term Dietary Treatment, M. Morroni, A. Sbarbati, G. D'Angelo, C. Catassi, P. L. Giorgi, S. Cinti

Scanning Microscopy

Jejunal mucosal specimens from twenty children with celiac disease were studied by light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) after one year of dietary treatment. An ultrastructural morphometric study was performed in five patients who had an intestinal permeability (IP) test. Seventeen patients were tested for serum antigliadin antibodies (AGA). In ten children, in whom LM showed partial villous atrophy, SEM and TEM examination confirmed the lesion. In the second group (10 children) with normal morphology at routine LM, SEM showed lesions of variable degree in 70% of cases. The morphological ultrastructural investigation showed good …

Polarized Membrane Domains Of Fibroblasts, Z. Somosy, Tamara Kubasova, G. J. Köteles Jul 1989

Polarized Membrane Domains Of Fibroblasts, Z. Somosy, Tamara Kubasova, G. J. Köteles

Scanning Microscopy

Data on the heterogeneous distribution of various membrane domains on the surface of fibroblasts are reviewed. Polarized localization of negative charges is demonstrated and new results on the development and maintenance of polarity in primary human fibroblasts are presented. Cell membrane heterogeneity in fibroblasts and in other cells is compared. Our results indicate that the regional localization of membrane domains of fibroblasts, and their dependence on cell movement and cell contacts is in several aspects similar to that described for epithelial cells.

The Lectin-Gold Technique: An Overview Of Applications To Pathological Problems, P. Versura, M. C. Maltarello, F. Bonvicini, R. Laschi Jun 1989

The Lectin-Gold Technique: An Overview Of Applications To Pathological Problems, P. Versura, M. C. Maltarello, F. Bonvicini, R. Laschi

Scanning Microscopy

Lectins are proteins, mainly of vegetal origin, which recognize glycosidic residues with high specificity; for this property they have been used for many studies of molecular biology. The colloidal gold represents at present the most popular electron dense marker employed in immunocytochemistry, since it offers intrinsic and unique characteristics which are superior to those displayed by the other markers.

The cytochemical method which utilizes the gold-labelled lectins takes advantages from both the two systems, in order to optimize the localization of the glycoconjugates.

The present paper reviews both the technical aspects of the preparation of the lectin-gold complex and its …

Solution-Mediated Transformation Of Octacalcium Phosphate (Ocp) To Apatite, R. Z. Legeros, G. Daculsi, I. Orly, T. Abergas, W. Torres Mar 1989

Solution-Mediated Transformation Of Octacalcium Phosphate (Ocp) To Apatite, R. Z. Legeros, G. Daculsi, I. Orly, T. Abergas, W. Torres

Scanning Microscopy

OCP crystals were hydrolyzed in solutions containing Ca2+, Mg2+, HPO42-, CO32-, F-, citrate or P2O7 ions. Products of hydrolysis were analyzed using scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction.

Results demonstrated that the OCP to Apatite (AP) transformation is influenced by: (1) types of ions in solution: inhibited by Mg2+, citrate or P2O74-; facilitated by F-, CO32-, HPO42- or Ca2+ ions; (2) ionic concentrations; (3) …

Heat-Set Gels Based On Oil/Water Emulsions: An Application Of Whey Protein Functionality, R. Jost, F. Dannenberg, J. Rosset Jan 1989

Heat-Set Gels Based On Oil/Water Emulsions: An Application Of Whey Protein Functionality, R. Jost, F. Dannenberg, J. Rosset

Food Structure

The microstructure of portein/lipid gels produced by heat treatment of whey protein stabilized oil-in-water(O/W) emulsions was studied. Scanning electron microscopy as well as transmission electron microscopy was performed on glutaraldehyde/osmium tetroxide fixed, and critical point-dried samples. Microstructure analysis showed that in the case of homogenized O/W emulsions, extensive coating of the fat globule surface with coagulated protein led to a "cauliflower - like" structure. In such gels, uncoated fat globules having smooth surfaces were not present. This specific microstructure was not obtained with protein/lipid gels in which whey protein was added in the continuous phase and mixed with a O/W …

Influence Of The Extrusion Process On Characteristics And Structure Of Pasta, M. Ambrogina Pagani, Plerpaolo Resmini, Gerardo Dalbon

Food Structure

The effects of the kneading and forming process or pasta quality have been investigated. Using the same blend of wheat flour and keeping mixing and drying conditions constant, three types of spaghetti were produced using the following three kneading and forming processes: A) kneading with a continuous press and forming by pressure-extrusion; B) kneading and forming by sheeting-rolls; C) kneading by hand and forming with sheeting-rolls. These three processes impart different mechanical work on the dough.

The three types of dried spaghetti exhibited differences in cooking requirements and in cooing quality. Spaghetti (A) absorbed water more slowly and showed poor …

The Effect Of Irradiation On Starch Content In Golden Delicious Apples, E. Kovacs, A. Keresztes Jan 1989

The Effect Of Irradiation On Starch Content In Golden Delicious Apples, E. Kovacs, A. Keresztes

Food Structure

Starch content in apple (Golden Delicious) skin and flesh was studied as a function of radiation dose (0, 0.5, 1, 2 and a 5kGy) after 8 weeks shelf life (16 C, 80-90% RH).

Starch was generally not found in the flesh with the exception of the 5 kGy sample. Starch grains were observed, however, in plastids of the epidermis and especially in the hypodermis in correlation with the radiation dose. 1 kGy dose caused a significant effect (p>99, 98%) on retardation of starch breakdown measured by electron microscopic morphometry and chemical analysis.

Analysis showed that increasing radiation dose increased …
