Adult soft-shelled clams (Mya arenaria) persist at low densities in Chesapeake Bay sandy habitats despite Intense predation by blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus). Clam persistence may be a consequence of variation in blue crab foraging rates as a function of clam density and sediment composition. In laboratory aquaria, we measured the functional responses (prey consumption per predator as a function of prey density) of large blue crabs to six densities of adult soft-shelled clams buried at natural depths in two sediment types (mud and sand). Functional responses in sand and mud were differentiated statistically by analyses of(1) residuals and residual sums …

A Survey Of The Temporary Easement For Construction Of The Proposed Bridge Over The Machipongo River, Roger Mann, James P. Whitcomb
Reports
On April 23 and 24, 1986 a survey was conducted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) on the temporary easement (3.248 acres) for the construction of the proposed bridge over the Machipongo River in Accomack County, Virginia (Figure 1). The study was done at the request of the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation, Suffolk, Virginia for Project 0182-001-102, RW-201.
The objective of this study was to determine the extent and value of the molluscan resource in· the temporary easement.

The Assessment Of Commercial Fishing Effort In Virginia Annual Report 1986, Joice S. Davis, James C. Owens, William H. Kriete Jr., Joseph G. Loesch
Reports
This report summarizes the assessment of commercial fishing effort in Chesapeake Bay and its Virginia tributaries during the period October 1, 1985 through December 31, 1986. Objectives of this study were: 1. to assess pound net fishing effort in Chesapeake Bay, and in the James, York and Rappahannock rivers; and 2. to assess anchor, drift, and stake gill net fishing effort in the James, York and Rappahannock rivers.
Additionally, two months of data for pound nets and anchor, drift, and stake gill nets have been included in order that the cessation of the study period would occur at a natural …

Enhancing The Value Of Commercial Fish Species Through Quality Control Procedures : An Integrated Approach For Mid-Atlantic Fisheries., Virginia Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science
Reports
Poor quality has often been cited as a major obstacle to increased foreign and domestic sales of U.S. harvested fish. In a report on fisheries trade prepared for the 1984 New England Governors' Conference, the absence of quality standards, particularly for finfish, was cited as a major reason for diminished economic returns to fishermen (Background Paper on Fisheries Trade 1984). A subsequent study by the New England Fisheries Development Foundation (NEFDF) revealed a definite need for vessel operators and buyers to initiate quality control in order to effectively compete for world markets (Connors and Ostergard 1986). The need for procedural …
