The Kinetics Of Solvent Reorientation In Hydroxylated Solvents From The Exciting-Wavelength Dependence Of Chromophore Emission Spectra, John Milton, Robert M. Purkey, William C. Galley
WM Keck Science Faculty Papers
The disappearance of the exciting-wavelength dependence of the phosphorescence spectra of polar, aromatic chromophores in supercooled glycol–water mixtures is utilized to monitor the kinetics of solvent reorientation. Reorientation times in the nanosecond to second range are obtained for (3:2 v/v) glycerol–water and (1:1 v/v) ethylene glycol–water at 140–240 °K. The results suggest that the process is one involving a cluster of solvent molecules and in which the chromophore plays a relatively passive role. Steady-state data and direct measurements of phosphorescence shifts as a function of time indicate that the solvent reorientation process is nonexponential in nature. The decay function derived …

Gamsiella, A New Subgenus Of Mortierella (Mucorales: Mortierellaceae), R. K. Benjamin
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Mortierella multidivaricata is described and placed in a new subgenus, Gamsiella, of M ortierella. It is distinguished from species of subgenus M ortierella in having repeatedly divaricately branched sporangiophores. Large numbers of sporangiola develop simultaneously on slender, attenuate pedicels arising from the ultimate branches of the sporangiophore. The sporangiole of M. multidivaricata forms two subglobose, finely sculpttued sporangiospores. Mostly terminal, globose, spiny chlamydospores are formed in slender, secondary, intra- or extrahyphal hyphae that arise from living segments of the ageing aerial mycelium. Classification of the Mortierellaceae is summarized briefly. The type and only known strain of M. multidivaricata originated from …

Wood Anatomy Of Bruniaceae: Correlations With Ecology, Phylogeny, Organography, Sherwin Carlquist
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Wood of Bruniaceae is very primitive according to widelyaccepted criteria. Vessels are relatively long, with scalariform perforation plates having numerous bars, fully or vestigially bordered. Many aberrations in disposition of bars and perforations in perforation plates are present, and no species has exclusively normal perforation plates. Lateral wall pitting of vessels, both intervascular and between vessels and rays, is scalariform to opposite. Vessels are solitary or nearly so, angular to round in transection. Helical thickenings are present in vessels of only a single species. All imperforate elements are thick-walled tracheids, some with gelatinous walls. Tracheids are only slightly longer (in …
