Ozonation Of Secondary Effluent For Color Removal, Michael Patton Dec 1974

Ozonation Of Secondary Effluent For Color Removal, Michael Patton

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of various ozone concentrations when applied to secondary kraft effluent in regards to color removal. The influence of effluent temperature upon the color removal capabilities of ozone was also investigated to determine the optimal ozone reaction temperature or the temperature which would result in the greatest color reduction at a given ozone concentration.

The study was conducted by injecting ozone at three different concentrations of 20, 30 and 40 mg/liter into a temperature controlled column of secondary kraft effluent obtained from S.D. Warren Company in Muskegon, Michigan. The temperature was …

Poplars In The Prairie Provinces, G. A. Steneker Nov 1974

Poplars In The Prairie Provinces, G. A. Steneker

Aspen Bibliography

The story of poplars is an unusual tale - a rag to riches story. The poplar has gone from weed to popular resource, because today this abundant species is being regarded by many as a possible source of newsprint, tissue, plywood and even livestock feed. Poplars provide choice winter and summer food for white-tailed deer and grouse, and the first prairie homes were built with and heated by poplar logs. Often considered a weed, the poplars of the Prairies are now facing a brighter future.

The Cedar-Sauk Field Station As A Background Site For Urban-Rural Spectral Comparisons Of Direct Beam Solar Radiation In The Visible, Howard A. Bridgman Oct 1974

The Cedar-Sauk Field Station As A Background Site For Urban-Rural Spectral Comparisons Of Direct Beam Solar Radiation In The Visible, Howard A. Bridgman

Field Station Bulletins

The general effects of urban atmospheric pollutants on incoming solar radiation have been observed for many years. Estimates of shortwave depletion usually fall in the 15-20% range (Landsberg, 1956, p. 589), but only a few studies have concentrated on depletion across the spectrum. Such studies have generally been concentrated on absorptive effects of gases in the infrared and the ultraviolet (see Kondratyev, 1969 and Robinson, 1966 for examples). The visible spectrum has largely been ignored. Essential to a study of urban spectral depletion effects is a properly chosen rural background site for comparison purposes, free from urban influences. The results …

Wetlands In Environmental Education, Paul E. Matthiae Oct 1974

Wetlands In Environmental Education, Paul E. Matthiae

Field Station Bulletins

Wetlands are one of the most useful resources the environmentally oriented educator has at his disposal. They are his best teaching facility. Most wetlands allow active use. They provide rapid and easy "direct contact" study of their components. Because one can get an overall perspective, it is often easier to observe the animal populations and to sample the plant communities. Whether the wetland is a wet cattail marsh, sedge meadow, woodland swamp or acid bog the student can see it, feel it and appreciate it as a reservoir for living things. The wetland is not only easy to observe and …

Selected Physical And Chemical Properties Of An Alkaline Bog Lake, Nancy E. Liptak, Margaret Summerfield Oct 1974

Selected Physical And Chemical Properties Of An Alkaline Bog Lake, Nancy E. Liptak, Margaret Summerfield

Field Station Bulletins

Mud Lake is located in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, on land adjoining the UW-Milwaukee Field Station. It is surrounded by Cedarburg Bog, the most extensive bog in southeastern Wisconsin. This lake is unusual among bog lakes in being alkaline. Some work has been done on the chemistry of acid bog lakes (Malins Smith, 1942; Gorham, 1956; Gorham and Pearsall, 1956; Hayward, 1957), but none of these authors sampled sites with pH values approximating those of Mud Lake. The primary purpose of this study was to begin a data bank of chemical analyses of Mud Lake water samples. The availability of such …

Phospholipid And Myoglobin Concentrations In Ground Bovine Extensor, Semitendinosus, And Gastrocnemius, Carla S. Hall Jun 1974

Phospholipid And Myoglobin Concentrations In Ground Bovine Extensor, Semitendinosus, And Gastrocnemius, Carla S. Hall

Masters Theses

A possible quantitative relationship between phospholipid and extractable myoglobin, or between their rates of change during the heating of beef was investigated. Three muscles--extensor, semitendinosus, and gastrocnemius--were chosen for study at three heating end points--55°, 66°, and 77°C.

The investigated relationship was not shown statistically across the muscles or age categories represented by the samples used. The effects of several variables on the muscle components studied were analyzed individually.

Extractable myoglobin decreased as internal end point temperature increased. Increasing end point temperature also resulted in increased phospholipid concentration, dry weight basis, and total lipid, wet weight basis. Neither myoglobin nor …

Characteristics of nonparticipating Utah counties and municipalities in the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act of 1965 were studied. Specific objectives studied were: (1) program awareness, (2) program understanding, and (3) reasons for nonparticipation from 1965 to 1970.

A telephone survey was conducted of all nonparticipating counties, all nonparticipating municipalities larger than 2500 population and a simple random sampling of municipalities smaller than 2500 population. Results were compared on a governmental unit and regional basis.

The survey determined that, as a whole, less than 45 percent of nonparticipating Utah counties and municipalities were aware of the program. The greatest awareness …

Effects Of Land Disposal Of Pulp Mill Effluents On Plant Nutrient Uptake And Element Balance, Joseph B. Schwarzback May 1974

Effects Of Land Disposal Of Pulp Mill Effluents On Plant Nutrient Uptake And Element Balance, Joseph B. Schwarzback

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An analysis of the soil and plant tissues was undertaken to ascertain the effect that land irrigation with pulp mill effluent has on nutrient uptake and element balance of tree seedlings. Results show that the effluent significantly increased the sodium content of both soil and tissue; however, these levels fell far below the level necessary to become detrimental to plant life, soil chemistry and soil structure. There was evidence that the increase of elements from the effluent provided positive effects in growth and plant health. There was no evidence of sodium toxicity or calcium starvation. Evidence clearly points out the …

Effects Of Surface Sizing Agents On Bod Of Recycled Papers, Lynn Berry Apr 1974

Effects Of Surface Sizing Agents On Bod Of Recycled Papers, Lynn Berry

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Surface sizing agents can be major contributors to a mill's BOD loading. A 2% solids application of polyvinyl alcohol will give little or no BOD as compared to a high BOD resulting from a 8% solids application of anionic and cationic starch. The use of polyvinyl alcohol will give equivalent or better strength properties along with better sizing and high wax picks with only about one-half to three-quarters of a pound pick up per 3300 ft2. High sizing values were achieved with the starches but at higher pick up levels. Polyvinyl alcohol could be best used in combination …

No-Sulfur Semi-Chemical Pulping With Na2Co3 And Naoh, James P. Hanson Apr 1974

No-Sulfur Semi-Chemical Pulping With Na2Co3 And Naoh, James P. Hanson

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Na2CO3/NaOH cooking liquors were evaluated as possible pulping agents for the production of semichemical pulp for use in corrugating medium. Optimum ratios of Na2CO3/NaOH were found to be 2/1 to 4/1. Pulp produced with ratios within these figures were equal to tensile and concora and higher in yield when compared to NSSC pulp made at the same temperature, time and Na2O/chip ratio. By increasing either the time or the Na2O, higher tensile and concora tests were obtained but with a slight sacrifice in yield. Na2CO3 …

The Effect Of Three Different Surface Sizes On Coated Sheet Properties, Roy W. Kemppainen Apr 1974

The Effect Of Three Different Surface Sizes On Coated Sheet Properties, Roy W. Kemppainen

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A literature search showed that although much work has been done on the mechanism of coating migration (1, 3, 5) and the influence of base sheet properties on migration (2, 8). No reports were found on the influence of different surface sizes on coating migration. The functions of a surface size in coating base stock is threefold. First, it is to resist excessive water penetration so that the sheet will retain sufficient strength for the coating operation. Second, the smoothness which it imparts is beneficial to further printing processes, especially in the case of offset. The third function of a …

Linear Programming As A Technique For Least Cost Furnish Analysis, James B. Keeler Apr 1974

Linear Programming As A Technique For Least Cost Furnish Analysis, James B. Keeler

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This study was a limited laboratory scale investigation of whether or not linear programming was a viable technique for determining the least cost furnish blends. It is original in that it used actual laboratory developed data for input to determine the linear programming model, and the results were actually produced in the laboratory to see if constraints were met. The materials used were a bleached hardwood, a bleached softwood, tab cards, clay and TiO2. It was found that requirements of linearity and averaging inherent in the linear programming caused results which were not as accurate as needed. However, …

Investigation Of The Static Mixer For Improved Heat Transfer To Black Liquors, Bruce J. Redmond Apr 1974

Investigation Of The Static Mixer For Improved Heat Transfer To Black Liquors, Bruce J. Redmond

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The objective of this experiment was to determine an improved method by which evaporation of kraft black liquors to the 50 to 65% total solids level could be sufficiently performed in multiple effect evaporators. This would eliminate the need of the highly malordorous direct contact evaporators which are presently used. Heat transfer characteristics of the Kenics Static Mixer were examined to determine if its application in multiple effect evaporator tubes would possibly reduce viscous liquor film layers which now hinder heat transfer. A single pass heat exchange unit that allowed removal of the inner tube and its replacement by a …

Use Of Brazilian Clays For Coating Formulations, Rubens Pellegrini Apr 1974

Use Of Brazilian Clays For Coating Formulations, Rubens Pellegrini

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Foreword

The massive effort of the Brazilian Government to develop a stronger and more competitive industry has boosted the production of pulp and paper up to six times its level of 1969.

The increasing demand for coated papers has forced the industry to look for new domestic sources of clay and to try to use the internally available product. Besides the undesirable situation of dependency upon a source many thousands of miles way, the difference in cost is the most appealing factor of all.

Today the three largest pulp and paper producers in Brazil have their own mines to assure …

"The Evaluation Of Bacterial Cellulose From Acetobacter Xylinum As A Potential Papermaking Material", Thomas R. Arnson Apr 1974

"The Evaluation Of Bacterial Cellulose From Acetobacter Xylinum As A Potential Papermaking Material", Thomas R. Arnson

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Bacterial cellulose was biosynthesized by Acetobacter xylinum on an enriched growth medium of glucose, yeast extract and KH2PO4. The bacterial cellulose fibers were found to be about one-fourth the size of an average softwood fiber.

Pulp and paper total mill effluents and alfalfa extract were exchanged for the glucose and the yeast extract in the growth medium to see if they could substitute for these materials. Kraft and NSSC total mill effluents were found to substitute for the glucose. The alfalfa extract was found to be a better and cheaper material than the yeast extract. Acetobacter …

Studies On The Causes Of Tree Distribution In A Forest Type In The Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Thomas A. Janszen Apr 1974

Studies On The Causes Of Tree Distribution In A Forest Type In The Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Thomas A. Janszen

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Vegetational composition and environmental parameters were analyzed in a forest type of the Dismal Swamp. A 0.5 ha forest stand was divided into 200 5 x 5 meter contiguous quadrats and the tree size classes were precisely mapped. Fifty soil samples were analyzed for texture, pH, and major nutrients. A topographic map was constructed with precision to 0.01 ft. Analysis of variance tests showed non-randomness to exist in soil texture and nutrient content while homogeneity tests showed non-randomness in distribution of some woody species. Factor analysis indicated no significant correlations between soil quality, topography, and woody species. Findings indicate that …
