Feeding And Food Preferences By Three Sympatric Species Of Cyprinodontid Fishes, Lawrence J. Baer Jul 1974

Feeding And Food Preferences By Three Sympatric Species Of Cyprinodontid Fishes, Lawrence J. Baer

OES Theses and Dissertations

The feeding and food utilization by three sympatric species of cyprinodontid fishes was examined using a modified Ivlev Electivity Co-efficient. Results indicated that although Fundulus heteroalitus and Fundulus majalis are sympatric in the area examined, their usage of the available food source varied noticeably. The third investigated species, Cyprinodon variegatus, fed mainly upon a vegetal detritus food source varied by the consumption of invertebrate and vertebrate food items. Slight intra-specific variances of diet between crespuscular periods was also discussed.

An Evaluation Of In-Stream Structures Designed To Provide Fish Habitat, Charles H. Call Jr. May 1974

An Evaluation Of In-Stream Structures Designed To Provide Fish Habitat, Charles H. Call Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In-stream concrete structures were studied through model tests and river tests. The model studies indicated that four designs provided good habitat in the model stream. These structures were the inverted weir, the "V" structure, the slab with legs and the cylinder. Through the river studies it was determined that these structures did not influence enough of the total river area to be effective in providing good fish habitat. Also an appreciable amount of yearly maintenance would be required to free the structures from silting in, debris, and vandalism. The slab with legs was the only promising structure.

The Fresh-Water Mussel Industry Of The Lower Tennessee River: Ecology & Future, Randall Grace May 1974

The Fresh-Water Mussel Industry Of The Lower Tennessee River: Ecology & Future, Randall Grace

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The fresh-water mussel industry of the Tennessee River is nearing an end. Overharvesting, habitat alterations, and pollution are the major contributors to the depletion of the mussel resource, upon which the shell industry is based. A history of unconcern by shell harvesters and weak conservation enforcement by governmental agencies, has left the major waterways of the United States nearly void of commercial clams. The lower Tennessee River presently supplies the mussel industry with nearly all the important species of mollusks. If this industry is to be maintained in the United States, ways to preserve and propagate the mussel population must …

Finitely Generated Modules Over Bezout Ringsrwiegand@Unl.Edu, Roger Wiegand, Sylvia Wiegand

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Let R be a Bezout ring (a commutative ring in which all finitely generated ideals are principal), and let M be a finitely generated R -module. We will study questions of the following sort: (A) If every localization of M can be generated by n elements, can M itself be generated by n elements? (B) If M 0 R m = Rn for some m, n, is Af necessarily free? (C) If every localization of M has an element with zero annihilator, does M itself have such an element? We will answer these and related questions for various familiar classes …

Parasites Of Salmonid Fishes From Southcentral Alaska, James Carl Riis Jan 1974

Parasites Of Salmonid Fishes From Southcentral Alaska, James Carl Riis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of fish parasites is directly related to the value of the fish they affect. Alaskan salmonids are extremely important and are constantly increasing in value to the United States. Other countries, such as Japan and Russia, are also finding Alaskan salmonids important as a foodstuff. If human populations continue growing at present rates, in only a few years there could be twice as many people eating fish. As a recreational asset in Alaska, salmonids rank at or near the top, both for sportfishing and as a natural attraction. It is thus important from an economic point of view …

Polypodium Sp. (Coelenterata) Found In North American Sturgeon, Glenn L. Hoffman Jan 1974

Polypodium Sp. (Coelenterata) Found In North American Sturgeon, Glenn L. Hoffman

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

On 27 May 1970, Mason Shouder, Michigan Fisheries Biologist, discovered some abnormal eggs in a ripe sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens. The fish were taken from the Black River near Cheboygan, Michigan, which is barricaded from Lake Huron by a dam built in the 1920's. Normal ripe eggs were black spheres; the abnormal ones were enlarged and grayish (Fig. 1). About 20% of the eggs were affected and attached to the wall of the uterus in saclike structures. The ovary was also abnormal, being flaccid. In May 1973, a single infected egg was found in vodka-prepreserved eggs from a ripe sturgeon …

Review Of Fish Pathology: A Guide To The Recognition And Treatment Of Diseases And Injuries Of Fishes, With Emphasis On Environmental And Pollution Problems And Parasites Of Freshwater Fishes: A Review Of Their Control & Treatment, Ross F. Nigrelli

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Fish Pathology states in its subtitle that it is "A guide to the recognition and treatment of diseases and injuries of fIshes with emphasis on environmental and pollution problems." These topics were included in the author's earlier volume "Krankheiten und Schadigungen der Fische" (Gustav Fischer Verlag, Stuttgart, 1966) and are only slightly revised in . this English translation by Christa Ahrens. Fish Pathology deals briefly but inadequately with semiology and histopathologY but it is a good introduction to information on infectious, parasitic, and nonparasitic diseases of fishes, and to such subjects as the harmful effects of pollutants and abnormal environmental …

Review Of Parasites Of Freshwater Fishes, Ross F. Nigrelli Jan 1974

Review Of Parasites Of Freshwater Fishes, Ross F. Nigrelli

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

The title of this paperback should be "The Treatment and Control of Parasites of Freshwater Fishes," since a therapeutic armamentarium is its chief feature. This information, which was collected from many, often obscure, sources, is the most comprehensive collection of data on the subject that has ever been assembled and published. As pointed out by Drs. Hoffman and Meyer, two outstanding authorities on fish diseases, the efficacy of many of the chemicals listed has not been critically evaluated, and some of them should be used with caution. To this end, they have included a table which gives the toxicity limits …

Rate Of Growth As A Method Of Assessing Water Quality, George L. Johnston

Masters Theses

A study of the Embarras River basin was conducted to determine if rate of growth could be used as an indicator of water quality. Six species of sucker were collected from five locations using hand seines and electrofishing gear from December 1970 to December 1971. Tests of eighteen water quality parameters were conducted from November 1970 to November 1971.

The fish were measured and scale samples taken. The rate of growth of the fish taken at the five stations was analyzed and compared using the single classification analysis of variance. Condition factors were also compared.

Although there was some difference …

Mercenaria Mercenaria (Mollusca: Bivalvia): Temperature-Time Relationships For Survival Of Embryos And Larvae, Vs Kennedy, Wh Roosenburg, M Castagna, Ja Mihursky

VIMS Articles

To estimate the effects of entrainment of Mercenaria mercenaria embryos and larvae in the cooling water systems of steam-electric power plants, we used a thermal gradient apparatus. Cleavage stages, trochophore larvae and straight-hinge veliger larvae were subjected to 11 different temperatures for 8 different time periods. There was a direct relationship of mortality with temperature increase and, at higher temperatures , with increase in time exposure. As the clams aged, temperature tolerance increased, with cleavage stages most sensitive to higher temperature and straight-hinge larvae least sensitive. Multiple regression analyses of percentage mortality on temperature and time produced estimating equations that …

Ichthyofaunal Diversification And Distribution In Jane's Creek Watershed, Randolph County, Arkansas, Cheryl Lynn Fowler, George L. Harp

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The purposes of this study were to determine the qualitative and quantitative distribution of fishes in the Jane's Creek watershed. Jane's Creek is a clear, spring-fed Ozark stream in northeastern Arkansas. A knowledge of the ichthyofauna of this stream prior to a long-range impoundment is of significance to the natural history of Arkansas. Jane's Creek and its tributaries were found to be alkaline, with no measurable turbidity, and to have low levels of carbon dioxide. Dissolved oxygen values ranged from 6.1 to 16.0 ppm. Only slight differences in physicochemical conditions were noted among stations and between pool and riffle areas …

The Effect Of Thermal Increases On The Acute Toxicity Of Copper And Hexavalent Chromium To Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Alan Kirk Millis Jan 1974

The Effect Of Thermal Increases On The Acute Toxicity Of Copper And Hexavalent Chromium To Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Alan Kirk Millis

Masters Theses

48-hr, 96-hr, and incipient median tolerance limits of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus Rafinesque) to copper and hexavalent chromium were determined at temperatures of 50, 60, 70, and 80 F. Standard static bioassay procedures were used. The incipient TLm for copper ranged from 0.56 ppm to 2.15 ppm and from 22.5 to 39.5 ppm for hexavalent chromium. The 48-hr and 96-hr results were somewhat higher. The highest resistance for both metals occurred at 70 F. At 80 F, however, there was a sharp decrease in tolerance. Increased oxygen consumption and opercular movement offer a possible explanation since they would …

Growth And Production Of Golden Shiner, Notemigonous Crysoleucas, Under Different Stocking Densities And Feeding Rates, Gary D. Hickman, Raj V. Kilambi

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Experiments on the effects of stocking densities and feeding rates on growth and production of golden shiner were conducted under laboratory conditions. The stocking densities were 20, 28 and 36 fry per 60 gal of water. The fish in tanks with 28 fry were fed at 1, 3 and 5% feeding rates and the rest were fed at 5% feeding rate. A 5% feeding rate was found to be essential for good production. The stocking density of 20 fry (400 lb/acre production) with 5% feeding rate yielded better growth in weight and length and better production than the rest of …
