KWRRI Research Reports

Samples of water, bottom fauna, and fishes were collected from 66 stations in the Salt River and one of its principal tributaries, the Beech Fork and its tributary, the Chaplin River, Kentucky. Precipitation ranged from 38.86 inches (1969) to 58.04 inches (1970), an increase of nearly 50 percent with marked fluctuations in discharge. Intensive comparisons of phosphates, sulfates, specific conductance, total alkalinity, total hardness, and turbidity showed the streams to be relatively clean and healthy. Nearly 300 different kinds of benthic organisms and other macroinvertebrates have been collected and identified from the basin. Detailed studies of caddisflies and stream drift …

A Test Of The Simple Recessive Hypothesis For The Inability To Taste Phenyl-Thio-Urea: A Family Study, Susan I. Wolf Aug 1973

A Test Of The Simple Recessive Hypothesis For The Inability To Taste Phenyl-Thio-Urea: A Family Study, Susan I. Wolf

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a report on the analysis of family data gathered to test the simple recessive hypothesis for the inability to taste phenyl-thio-urea (P.T.C.). The simple recessive hypothesis states that the inability of a minority of persons to taste high concentrations of P.T.C. is due to the action of an autosomal recessive gene in the homozygous condition.

B704: Costs And Returns On Maine Apple Farms, Wilbert C. Geiss Jr., Reginald K. Harlan

Bulletins

The purpose of this study was to collect data relative to the costs of growing, harvesting, storing, and packing apples in Maine, to analyze the factors affecting costs and returns, and to provide Maine apple producers with current information for adjusting farm resources to achieve optimum efficiency in production under rapidly changing economic conditions.

This study was undertaken to determine the profitability of Maine apple farms, and to determine the current size and scope of the Maine apple industry. The results and implications of this study should be useful to all concerned with the apple industry in Maine and New …

Annotated Checklist Of Mammals Of The Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. I. Chiroptera, J. Knox Jones Jr., James Dale Smith, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Our field investigations on the Yucatán Peninsula were initiated in the summer of 1962 when two field parties from the Museum of Natural History at the University of Kansas visited the area. One field party consisted of W.E. Duellman and six students enrolled in a summer field course in vertebrate zoology; the other party was composed of the senior author and four students who were conducting a survey of Middle American terrestrial vertebrates and their ectoparasites. Some of the data relative to ectoparasites obtained during this study have appeared in the publications of Emerson (1971), Kohls et al. (1965), Loomis …

Economic (Linear Programming) Model Of The Farming Region Served By The D.M.D.A. Irrigation Company, Delta, Utah, Francisco Zarzalejo May 1973

Economic (Linear Programming) Model Of The Farming Region Served By The D.M.D.A. Irrigation Company, Delta, Utah, Francisco Zarzalejo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The main objectives of the study are to create a linear programming model of the study area in order to estimate changes in benefits when water delivery system losses are assumed to be affected by shifting between rotation, demand and continuous flow management systems,

Approximately 7,000 acres are included in the program model and the estimated potential "gains" or benefits from distribution system loss "savings" due to more efficient delivery range from $6,000 to _ $12,000 per season. This result is influenced by the facts that the - loss estimates are hypothetical and the system studied is in an area …

The Closing Circle: A Review Of Barry Commoner's Book, Robert L. Scott Apr 1973

The Closing Circle: A Review Of Barry Commoner's Book, Robert L. Scott

IUSTITIA

Commoner's book provides an opportunity to review the problems of pollution and their causes in the social, political, and economic fabric of our society. This review also provides an opportunity to compare and contrast natural and social laws. From this examination of the problem of pollution and the interface between natural and social law emerge certain ideological concerns confronting Americans as a people.

A Study Of The Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Project And Its Impact On The Resources Of The Upper Saint John River Valley, Rosemary M. Manning, Sierra Club, New England Chapter

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

This report was under-taken primarily to evaluate the impact that the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project would have upon the resources of the Upper St. John River, and to examine the assertion that the Dickey-Lincoln project constitutes a wise use of the public's environmental and economic resources. Since the case that has been made for the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project rest primarily on the justification of the project in economic terms, this aspect of the project proposal will be intensively explored.

Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.
