How Fungicide Alters The Hidden Mycobiome Of A Restored Prairie System, Mya Reyes, Noah Brown, Anthony Yannarell

PRECS student projects

  • Fungal Endophytes are microscopic fungi that live inside plant tissues and form a symbiotic relationship that influences the fitness of both parties.

  • Fungicides are a widely used method of crop disease control in agriculture, but fungicides can be carried into other environments by water and wind.

  • This experiment looks at how long-term fungicide exposure affects diversity of fungal endophytes that are grown in vitro as well as screens them for phosphate solubilization ability.

  • Phosphate is a vital macronutrient that is essential for making nucleic acids (DNA, RNA) as well as playing a vital role in energy transfer throughout the plant's …

Modeling The Relationship Between Estimated Fungicide Use And Disease-Associated Yield Losses Of Soybean In The United States I: Foliar Fungicides Vs Foliar Diseases, Ananda Y. Bandara, Dilooshi K. Weerasooriya, Shawn P. Conley, Carl A. Bradley, Tom W. Allen, Paul D. Esker

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Fungicide use in the United States to manage soybean diseases has increased in recent years. The ability of fungicides to reduce disease-associated yield losses varies greatly depending on multiple factors. Nonetheless, historical data are useful to understand the broad sense and long-term trends related to fungicide use practices. In the current study, the relationship between estimated soybean yield losses due to selected foliar diseases and foliar fungicide use was investigated using annual data from 28 soybean growing states over the period of 2005 to 2015. For national and regional (southern and northern United States) scale data, mixed effects modeling was …

Evaluation Of Fungicides And Biofungicide To Control Phytophthora Root Rot (Phytophthora Cinnamomi Rands) And Ambrosia Beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) On Flowering Dogwoods Exposed To Simulated Flood Events, Matthew S. Brown, Fulya Baysal-Gurel, Jason B. Oliver, Karla M. Addesso

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Phytophthora root rot causes major economic losses in woody ornamental nurseries, especially in plants exposed to flooding. Ambrosia beetles, which attack stressed trees, are also important pests of woody plants. In this study, several products were evaluated for control of Phytophthora root rot and ambrosia beetles on containerized flowering dogwoods (Cornus florida L.) exposed to simulated flood events under field conditions. In two trials, preventive (7 days preflooding) or curative (1 day postflooding) sprench (combination spray and drench) treatments were applied to containerized dogwoods artificially inoculated with Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands. The plants were flooded by maintaining standing water for 1, …

Winter Wheat Grain Yield Response To Fungicide Application Is Influenced By Cultivar And Rainfall, Emmanuel Byamukama, Shaukat Ali, Jonathan Kleinjan, Dalitso N. Yabwalo, Christopher Graham, Melanie Caffe-Treml, Nathan D. Mueller, John Rickertsen, William A. Berzonsky

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Winter wheat is susceptible to several fungal pathogens throughout the growing season and foliar fungicide application is one of the strategies used in the management of fungal diseases in winter wheat. However, for fungicides to be profitable, weather conditions conducive to fungal disease development should be present. To determine if winter wheat yield response to fungicide application at the flowering growth stage (Feekes 10.5.1) was related to the growing season precipitation, grain yield from fungicide treated plots was compared to non-treated plots for 19 to 30 hard red winter wheat cultivars planted at 8 site years from 2011 through 2015. …

The environmental fate and potential impacts of nanopesticides on agroecosystems under realistic agricultural conditions are poorly understood. As a result, the benefits and risks of these novel formulations compared to the conventional products are currently unclear. Here, we examined the effects of repeated realistic exposures of the Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide, Kocide 3000, on simulated agricultural pastureland in an outdoor mesocosm experiment over 1 year. The Kocide applications were performed alongside three different mineral fertilization levels (Ambient, Low, and High) to assess the environmental impacts of this nanopesticide under low-input or conventional farming scenarios. The effects of Kocide over time were …

Individual And Combined Effects Of Herbicide Tribenuron-Methyl And Fungicide Tebuconazole On Soil Earthworm Eisenia Fetida, Jiqiang Chen, Muhammad Saleem, Caixia Wang, Wenxing Liang, Qingming Zhang

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Earthworms are soil engineers that alter the soil bio-physical properties to favor plant growth whereas pesticides represent a significant threat to their abundance and soil health. Thus, we investigated the toxic effects of tribenuron-methyl (TBM) and tebuconazole (TEB) on the soil earthworm, Eisenia fetida. The TBM demonstrated low toxicity to E. fetida in the contact filter paper and artificial soil tests, with median lethal concentrations (LC50) of 135.6 μg cm−2 at 48 h and 511 mg kg−1 on day 14, respectively. Similarly, TEB also showed low toxicity to E. fetida in the artificial …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebFact addresses symptoms and management of foliar leaf spot diseases in wheat.

Foliar leaf spot diseases in wheat occur in spring and summer. Tan spot is characterized by small brown, oval lesions with tan centers early on. Later large tan blotches have a yellow halo. Septoria leaf blotch is characterized by tan irregularly shaped blotches with black specks and a yellow margin. Septoria leaf and glume blotch is characterized by brown irregularly shaped blotches on leaves, purple-brown lesions on glumes and black specks absent from lesions.

The disease can be managed through crop rotation and stubble management that leaves …

Home grown strawberries, raspberries and grapes are a rewarding experience for the gardener as well as the consumer of the fresh fruits and jellies. If properly managed, these crops can be a source of enjoyment for years. To be successful, however, the home gardener must develop a sound integrated pest management (IPM) approach to controlling diseases and insect pests. A good IPM program makes use of cultural, varietal and chemical means of preventing or reducing disease losses.

This NebFact discusses which fungicides to use for which disease of small garden fruits and provides recommendations for a fungicide treatment schedule.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Growing tree fruits in the home garden can be a very enjoyable experience, and with proper management, can provide many years of enjoyment. Success in growing tree frutis depends on following an approach known as integrated pest management, or IPM. In this management program, variety selection, cultural practices and chemical means are used to prevent or reduce losses due to diseases or insects.

This NebFact covers cultural practices, variety selection, the control of disease problems, and how to correctly use chemical controls for a safer environment.
