Survival Of Trout Strains As Affected By Limnological Parameters, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Prior work at East Canyon Reservoir, Utah indicated that adult trout are important predators of stocked juvenile rainbow trout. Brown trout, in particular, were exclusively piscivorous when th~y exceeded 185 mm standard length. Fish became increasingly important in the diet of cutthroat trout greater than 330 mm. The purpose of this study was to further document the effect of adult trout on survival of juvenile rainbow trout in mid-elevation reservoirs. Causey Reservoir was chosen because it was thought to contain large brown and cutthroat trout and had not been intensively studied during the last eight years.

The bivalve larval velum contains four bands of cilia: inner and outer preoral bands, an adoral band, and a postoral band. The preoral bands of compound cilia are generally considered to be used for both locomotion and food gathering. The adoral and postoral bands function in concert with the preoral bands in food gathering and transfer of food to the mouth. Cilia are usually described as cylindrical structures which taper to a blunt tip. Modified cilia with disc-shaped (discocilia) or pad dle-shaped ends have been recorded in several invertebrate species. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate the presence of …

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts annual surveys of oyster spatfall ( or "sett.ing") in Virginia waters. This survey provides an estimate of the potential of a particular area for receiving a "striken or set of oysters and helps define the timiug of setting events. In 1988 spatfall was monitored from June 6 to October 16 at a total of forty-two stations (Figure 1). · During this period shellstrings were deployed at each station (0.5m off the bottom) on a weekly basis. Three sets of twelve oysters from the ,James River were placed in three recirculating aquaria dosed with the radioactive tracer zinc-65. All aquaria had the same amount of river bottom sediment which was kept in suspension by the water movement caused by aeration; one aquarium had twice as much tracer as the other two. The salinity of one of the low dose aquaria and. the high dose aquarium was maintained at 18 0/00: the other low dose aquarium was maintained at 1:2 0/00. All other factors were kept constant. Comparison Of Condition Indicies (K) Of Spot (Leiostomus Xanthurus) From The Elizabeth And York Rivers, Virginia, Kinloch Nelson

Spot from the York and Elizabeth Rivers were taken in 1983, 1984, and 1985. The length to weight ratio was used to find the equation for Condition Index (K). Condition Indices for the two populations were found and plotted against temperature. Regression lines were plotted for each group. From 6 to 19 degrees, the Condition Index of the two populations rises at similar rates. From 19 degrees on, the Elizabeth River Condition Index rises steadily while the York K drops down to approach the levels of winter.

In June 1987 under the Offshore Constitution Settlement (OCS), the Australian and West Australian State Governments completed the first stage of rationalising jurisdiction over a number of fisheries operating off the West Australian coast. The 1986/87 Australian catch was about 8,300 tonnes. At present levels of fishing,it has been suggested that this could be substantially increased. The fishery is not in danger of over-exploitation. Rather, the problem could be that there is more fish available than existing markets could absorb. However, there are prospects for increasing the present volume of fish sold domestically and for developing new products and markets in Australia and overseas.

A pumped storage system consists of an upper reservoir and lower reservoir separated by an elevation difference. During low demand energy periods such as nights and weekends water is pumped from the lower to the upper reservoir using available energy from conventional steam electric power plants. During high energy demand periods, such as mornings and afternoons of weekdays, upper reservoir water is allowed to drop back down through the same system of water conduits and turbines, generating electricity to conveniently meet abrupt electrical energy requirements. The same water turbines thus act both as pumps and as conventional hydroelectric turbines.
