Physical Activity And Mental Health Of Youth During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Amber Watson, Alicia Fedewa, Clair Tischner

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

The COVID-19 Pandemic has globally impacted children’s physical activity and mental health outcomes since the transition to remote learning (Štveráková, et al., 2021). Children and adults may encounter negative mental health related consequences, higher stress, and a significant lack of physical activity while in physical and social isolation (Clemente-Suárez, 2022). In particular, school-aged children have experienced a significant reduction in physical activity since transitioning to remote learning and do not have sufficient opportunities to make up for this loss while engaged in remote learning (Štveráková, et al., 2021). Increased physical activity has been consistently correlated with positive mental health outcomes …

Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Therapy

The frontline treatment for patients younger than 40 years with severe aplastic anemia (AA) is allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) from a human leukocyte antigen-identical sibling donor. However, in patients with severe AA who are older than 40 years, allogeneic HSCT has been found to be associated with increased treatment related mortality and toxicity, even when matched sibling donors are used. We report our institutional experience with allogeneic HSCT in patients with severe AA between 40 and 50 years. A total of 19 patients with severe AA were included in the study. Overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) …

Ocular Ultrasonography And Echobiometry In Sheep, Hakim Athar, Jalal Udin Parrah, Nida Handoo, Abdul Qayoom Mir, Mehraj Udin Dar, Beenish Qureshi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Ocular sonography and echobiometry was performed in local nondescript sheep (N = 36) of different age group and in adult corriedale (N = 60), crossbred Fec B (N = 48), and Poll Dorset cross breed sheep (N = 48). Cornea, anterior, posterior lens capsule, and retinal rim appeared hyperechoic whereas aqueous, vitreous humor, and nucleus of lens were anechoic. Significant increase (P < 0.05) in all the echobiometric measurement of the ocular distance except central corneal thickness and retinal rim thickness was recorded in the older animals (2 year old) compared to values recorded in animals at one month of age in local nondescript sheep. Significant differences (P < 0.05) in few recorded ocular biometric measurements were also noticed among different sheep breeds. However, the difference in the various ocular biometric measurements between the right and left eyes was nonsignificant. The results of this study provide the base line information regarding the ocular echobiometry in sheep that are relevant to comparative ocular anatomy and can be useful for ultrasonographic evaluation of different ocular affections in sheep.

What Role Does Age-Associated Neuroplasticity Play In The Efficacy Of Cochlear Implantation?, Jacob Fliegelman

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Bilateral, profound-severe, congenital deafness causes widespread structural and functional changes of the auditory system. In humans, the consequences of these changes are extensive and often include detriments to language acquisition and auditory perception. Fortunately, early intervention methods, such as cochlear implantation, can significantly mitigate inevitable auditory deficiencies. This review begins by briefly addressing early stages of brain development and associated anatomical discrepancies observed in congenitally deaf subjects. Considering the deleterious effects of congenital deafness, neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to rewire itself, is of paramount importance in reversing the auditory impairments. Hence, its incorporation into the methods required for …
