Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The Turkish Merino is the most common mutton breed in Turkey. In this study the Turkish Merino was used as a sire line for the production of two-way and three-way crossbred slaughter lambs. Our aim was to investigate improvements in the meat production of these crossbred lambs. In this part of the study, the fattening, slaughter and carcass characteristics of two-way and three-way crossbred lambs were taken into consideration in comparison with those of Turkish Merino purebred lambs. The inspected live weights at the end of fattening were 37.6 kg, 37.8 kg and 37.4 kg for Turkish Merino x Kıvırcık, …

Investigations On Improving The Meat Production Of Slaughter Lambs By Crossbreeding Studies Between Turkish Merino, Chios And Kıvırcık Sheep Breeds 1. Fertility, Lamb Survival And Growth Of Lambs, Mustafa Özcan, Alper Yilmaz, Münevver Akgündüz
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was carried out at Marmara Animal Research Institute in 1998-1999. The aim was to investigate the improvement in lamb production achieved by the use of Turkish Merino rams as a father line for the production of two-way and three-way crossbred slaughter lambs, together with intensive fattening programs. In this first part of the study, the fertility of ewes and the survival and growth characteristics of lambs were taken into consideration. For the fertility characteristics of Kıvırcık, Chios x Kıvırcık (F_1) and Turkish Merino ewes mated with Turkish Merino rams, conception rates were 75%, 88% and 93.33%, litter sizes …

Milk Production In Akkaraman, Sakız (Chios) X Akkaraman F_1, Kıvırcık X Akkaraman F_1 And Sakız (Chios) X Karayaka B_1 Ewes During The First Lactation, Necmetti̇n Ünal, Fati̇h Atasoy, Meli̇k Aytaç, Hali̇l Akçapinar
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The study was carried out to investigate milk production in Akkaraman, Sakız (Chios) x Akkaraman F_1 (SA F_1), Kıvırcık x Akkaraman F_1 (KA F_1) and Sakız (Chios) x Karayaka B_1 (SKY B_1) ewes during the first lactation. Daily milk yield, lactation milk yield and lactation length were 340.11 g, 50.52 kg and 144.8 days for Akkaraman; 430.66 g, 67.83 kg and 154.63 days for SA F_1; 301.87 g, 44.93 kg and 145.40 days for KA F_1; 210.27 g, 26.96 kg and 123.50 days for SKY B_1 ewes, respectively. Differences between genotypes in terms of daily milk yield, lactation milk yield …

Survival Rate, Growth Characteristics And Some Body Measurements Of Akkaraman And Sakız (Chios) X Akkaraman F_1 Lambs, Necmetti̇n Ünal
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was carried out to investigate the survival rate, growth characteristics and some body measurements of Akkaraman and Sakız (Chios) x Akkaraman F_1 lambs. The Akkaraman breed has a fat tail and is raised in Central Anatolia, while Sakız has a long, but low fat tail and is raised in coastal areas of Western Anatolia. In the study, fertility results of Akkaraman x Akkaraman and Sakız x Akkaraman (SA) were determined to be 83.67 and 75.44% for birth rates, and 1.12 and 1.16 for litter size, respectively. The survival rates of Akkaraman and SA F_1 lambs at weaning (90 …

Fertility And Milk Yield Characteristics In White Karaman And Chios X White Karaman (F_1) Crossbred Sheep, Fi̇kret Esen, Orhan Özbey
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, various characteristics of fertility and milk yield were investigated in White Karaman and Chios x White Karaman crossbred (F_1) sheep. The study was carried out at the Research and Practice Farm at the University of Fırat, on 30 White Karaman and 22 Chios x White Karaman crossbred (F_1) sheep 1.5 years of age to examine fertility characteristics and on 20 animals from each genotype at the age of 2 years to examine milk yield characteristics. Animals in oestrous cycle were improved by addition of a teaser ram within the study population, and they were then inseminated by …
