Digenetic Trematodes Of Marine Fishes From The Kuwaiti Coast Of The Arabian Gulf, Faiza Yousef Al-Yamani

D~ring July and August 1978, 165 fishes belonging to 35 species in 19 families were collected from the Kuwaiti coast of the Arabian Gulf and examined for parasites. Nine digenetic trematodes including three new species and two new genera are described: (Hemiuridae) Opisthadena kuwaiti, n.sp. from Valamugil seheli, Lecithocladium bulbolabrum Reid, Coil and Kuntz, 1966 from Johnius aneus (new host record), 1· unibulbolabrum Fischthal and Thomas, 1971 from Rastralliger kanagurta (new host record), Clupenuroides sheemi n.g., n.sp, from Eleutheronema tetradactylum; (Angiodactylidae) Hexangium sigani Goto and Ozaki, 1929 from Sigartus oramin; (Pleorchiidae) Pleorchis arabicus n.sp. from Otolithes argenteus; (Opecoelidae) Helicometrina nimia …

Larval Trematode Populations And Host-Parasite Interactions In Cerithidea Californica, John M. Emery

Cerithidea california is examined to determine the fecundity of the parasitic trematode species in its gonad. Five species of trematodes are studied (Cloacitrema michiganensis, Euhaplorchis californiensis, Parorchis acanthus, Himasthia rhigedana, and Acanthoraryphium sp.). Their fecundity is determined by direct counts of rediae and estimation of the cercarial population. Correlations are shown for trematode numbers and snail size.

Incidences of infection are given with regard to site, snail size, and trematode species. Comparison is made between infection ratios of C. californica and another marsh snail, Batillaria zonalis.

The taxonomy of the polyclad flatworms is fairly well-known and some attention has been given to study of their physiology. Investigations of an ecological nature, however, are scarce; in fact, no ecological studies have been made on the Pacific Coast of North America. Else- where, Pearse and Wharton (1938) investigated the general ecology of Stylochus frontalis, associated with oysters on the coasts of Florida, and occasional notes have appeared, reporting on polyclads as predators on oysters and barnacles (Book, 1925: Wolke, 1954; Loosanoff, 1956: Skerman,1960)

The present paper deals solely with parasites of marine fishes of the family Enbiotocidae represented in the American Pacific according to Special Publications no. 2, American Fisheries Society, 1960, by 20 species, all of which are marine except the Tule perch, Hysterocarpus traski (Gibbons) from fresh water. In Tomales and Bodega Bays 174 fishes representing 9 embiotocid species were examined and found to harbor 6 species of digenetic trem todes, including one here in described as new.

The following seven species of hemiurid trematodes, some with new host records, are reported in this study: Dissosaccus laevis, Genolinea laticauda, Lecithaster salmonis, Parahemiurus merus, Sterrhurus exodicus, Sterrhurus monticelli and Tubulovesicula lindbergi. Dissosaocus laeyis and Sterrhurus monticelli are reported for the first time from the West Coast of North America.

Genolinea oncorhynohi Adams and Margolis 1958 is placed in synonymy with Genolinea laticauda Manter 1925. Keys for Genolinea and Tubulovesicula species, modified from Manter (1954) are included. The aim of this investigation was to study some of the digenetic trematodes of marine fishes from Monterey Bay, with special reference to the genus Opecoelus family Opecoelidae Ozaki 1925. Extensive work on this family has been done by Dr. D. Yaiuaguti and his colleagues in Japan. After the Allan Hancock Pacific expeditions to the Galapagos Islands in 1934. Dr. H. W. The family Bucephalidae is unique in the class Trematoda by virtue of the mouth being situated near the mid-ventral portion of the body. Other characteristics of the family include: haptor near the anterior extremity; a simple, sac-like gut with pharynx and esophagus; genital pore ventral, just anterior to the posterior extremity; gonads posterior and vitellaria species live in the gut of marine and fresh-water fishes. The metacercariae are found encysted beneath the skin or in the nervous system of other fishes serving as second intermediate hosts. Sporocysts and cercariae have been recovered from a variety of lamellibranchs.

A survey of the trematode parasites of marine fishes of Tomales and Bodega Bays, California, was instituted In the Spring of 1948. Many adult forms were obtained, but the search progressively narrowed Itself to a study of the larval trematodss of an area of Tomales Bay, known, as Nick's Cove. Here an interesting cystophorous cercaria was discovered in the littoral snail, Thais emarglnata.

Very little is known of the development, life history, economic importance, of biological relationships of larval trematodes, especially in their molluscan and arthropod hosts on the Pacfic Coast. The comparatively few contributions to our knowledge have been from scattered and fragmentary observations. The purpose of this study was to expand our knowledge and to lay a foundation for further work on trematode life cycles in marine organisms. The area selected for special investigation was Nick's Cove, Tomales Bay, California.

Studies on trematodes of marine organisms of the Pacific Coast have been of a scattered and fragmentary nature. J. Stafford (1904) collected and described a number of trematodes from fishes of the north Pacific, but, in his historical survey, Manter (1926) fails to mention specifically any studies covering the waters south of Canada. The genus Probolitrema was established by Looss (1901) in recognition of the location of vitellaria and multiple testes entirely outside the extra caecal field in Anaporrhutum richardii Lopez (1888) which differentiated it from A.albidum Ofenheim (1900) with the vitellaria within and the testes partly within and partly without the intra-caecal field. Ofenhein had created the genus Anaporrhutum for the above two species because of their multiple testes. A.albidum was a new species described by him; his A.richiardii Lopez specimens he considered to be the same species as Distomum richiardii Lopez, described in detail by Monticelli in 1893.
