Courtship And Reproduction In The Bali Mynah, Leucopsar Rothschildi (Aves : Sturnidae), Ann Patterson Marshall Jan 1981

Courtship And Reproduction In The Bali Mynah, Leucopsar Rothschildi (Aves : Sturnidae), Ann Patterson Marshall

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Reproductive behavior of captive Bali Mynahs (Leucopsar rothschildi) was studied at the Smithsonian Institution's Conservation and Research Center, Front Royal, Virginia. Courtship and copulation are followed by egg-laying, then incubation, hatching, brooding and feeding, fledging, and feeding. Parents become aggressive toward their young at the start of a new reproductive period, marked by a renewal of courtship.

The female does the majority of the incubation, brooding, and feeding of the young, although the male participates as well. The male performs both the bobbing· display and the crest display more than the female does. During these displays, the crest is prominently …

Population Dynamics Of Musculus Senhousia And Protothaca Staminea In Tomales Bay, California, David Mcclain Nelson Jan 1981

Population Dynamics Of Musculus Senhousia And Protothaca Staminea In Tomales Bay, California, David Mcclain Nelson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The changes in population density, growth and biomass of two infaunal, sympatric, suspension-feeding bivalves, Musculus senhousia (Benson, 1842) and Protothaca staminea (Conrad, 1837), have been investigated over an eighteen month period in Tomales Bay, California. M. senhousia, a mussel, displays two basic spawning times, one of which occurs in late spring, while the second spawning takes place in late summer. M. staminea, a venerid, spawns once during late spring. The population density of the mussel ranged from 9,180 m-2 in early spring to 752 m-2 in the fall of 1976. M. staminea had a maximum density of 1,120 m- 2 …

The Effect Of Heparin On Growth Characteristics Of Transplanted Spontaneously Occurring C3h/Hej Mouse Mammary Tumor, Muhammed Saleh Abdullah Banaja Jan 1981

The Effect Of Heparin On Growth Characteristics Of Transplanted Spontaneously Occurring C3h/Hej Mouse Mammary Tumor, Muhammed Saleh Abdullah Banaja

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Mouse mammary tumor is a common form of cancer used for experimental purposes. It is relatively resistant to chemotherapy. This investigation is designed to test the effect of heparin, a naturally occurring anticoagulant, on tumor growth using a genetically uniform laboratory animal.

The Effect Of Temperature On The Life Cycle Of Drosophila Acutilabella, Donald A. Miles Jan 1981

The Effect Of Temperature On The Life Cycle Of Drosophila Acutilabella, Donald A. Miles

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This is a study of the rate of development of the fly, Drosophila acutilabelle, Stalker (1953), at three temperatures, 22°, 25°, and 28°C. It is part of a larger project testing the hypothesis that stenothermal species (those restricted to a narrow temperature range) are more sensitive than eurythermal species, such a the cosmopolitan D. melanogaster and D. hydei (those able to live over a broad temperature range) to the effects of temperature during development. It has been suggested that eurythermal species have a lower Q10 of development. The species used in this study is considered to be stenothermal because …

The Use Of Visually Evoked Cortical Potentials To Evaluate Changes In The Rate Of Recovery From Phenobarbital Anesthesia In The Rat, Steven Theodore Heggeness Jan 1981

The Use Of Visually Evoked Cortical Potentials To Evaluate Changes In The Rate Of Recovery From Phenobarbital Anesthesia In The Rat, Steven Theodore Heggeness

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Signal averaging of visually evoked cortical potentials was done on Wistar strain rats during recovery from nembutal (sodium pentobarbital) anesthesia. Several studies (Dafny, 1978; Gines et al., 1963; Roig et al., 1961) have shown significant differences between recordings from unanesthetized rats and from rats anesthetized with various agents. The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in the cortical response throughout an eight hour nembutal recovery period in order to determine the feasibility of using a signal averaging technique for classification of anesthetic depth.

The results of this study show that the recovery from nembutal anesthesia is characterized by …

Differentiation Of Dopamine Receptor Types In The Central Nervous System Of The Rat, Ihor Krewsun Jan 1981

Differentiation Of Dopamine Receptor Types In The Central Nervous System Of The Rat, Ihor Krewsun

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

There is considerable evidence to suggest that dopamine (DA), in addition to its role as a precursor of norepinephrine (NE) and ephinephrine, has important physiological actions in its own right. One physiological action of DA seems to be that of a neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain (Hornykiewicz, 1966). In addition, there is evidence that abnormalities of dopaminergic transmission in the central nervous system (CNS) may be of clinical importance. For example, dopaminergic over activity in the mesolimbic forebrain may be a primary feature in the etiology of schizophrenia (Meltzer and Stahl, 1976).

The drugs used to treat schizophrenia act as …

Eye Movement Related Single-Unit Recording In The Nucleus Reticularis Tegmenti Pontis In The Alert Monkey, William Franklin Crandall Jr. Jan 1981

Eye Movement Related Single-Unit Recording In The Nucleus Reticularis Tegmenti Pontis In The Alert Monkey, William Franklin Crandall Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Nucleus Reticularis Tegmenti Pontis (NRTP) is a structure which lies in the mid-brain ventral to the oculomotor complex. Anatomical studies strongly implicate it in oculomotor function as most of its inputs and outputs are to systems previously shown to be intimately involved in eye movement generation--superior colliculus (SC) and cerebellum. These reports show an integrative structure with inputs and outputs distributed in a way well suited for performing relay and feedback tasks. Physiological data in the alert, trained monkey has been gathered in an attempt to characterize these neurons and to classify them in functional terms. Three monkeys were trained …

Protective Effects Of Certain Lythraceae Alkaloids And Homologs In Croton Oil- And Carrageenan-Induced Inflammation, John Alan Byrne Jan 1981

Protective Effects Of Certain Lythraceae Alkaloids And Homologs In Croton Oil- And Carrageenan-Induced Inflammation, John Alan Byrne

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Cryogenine's immunosuppressive activity was first evaluated by Kosersky, et al. (21) who, impressed by the drug's ability to inhibit both the irritant- and immune- mediated phases of adjuvant-induced polyarthritis (11), quantitatively confirmed this activity and clearly differentiated the action of cryogenine from that displayed by 6-mercaptopurine. A definitive study by Watson and Malone (22) confirmed cryogenine's lack of immunosuppressive capacity at effective anti-inflammatory dose levels.

The molecular complexity of the lythraceae alkaloids suggests that several active centers may account for their unique pharmacological profile. To assess these potentially active sites, two standard models of acute inflammation were selected for use …
