The Preparation And Characterization Of Diastereomeric (+)-Quinicinol, Ronald Timpe
The Preparation And Characterization Of Diastereomeric (+)-Quinicinol, Ronald Timpe
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Female Anopheles mosquitoes are the only known vectors of human malaria (1) so that eradication of the disease depends on either eliminating the Anopheles mosquito or controlling the Plasmodium organism. In the U.S., Fiji Islands, Hawaii, and Guam, the absence of malaria is due to the absence or elimination of the Anopheles (1). Where the mosquito is less easily eliminated, the Plasmodium parasite must be controlled, and so the quest for effective antiplasmodial drugs is a continuing effort. More than 20,000 drugs (1), 14,000 of which were investigated between 1941-1945 (2), have been studied in regard to their aniplasmodial effect. …
The Structure Of Experimental Clastic-Substrate Marine Communities, Wayne Aloysius Evans
The Structure Of Experimental Clastic-Substrate Marine Communities, Wayne Aloysius Evans
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It is hypothesized that difference between containers and between sediments will produce structural differences in the resulting communities by intensifying competition for resources, and by excluding certain classes of predators. It is also hypothesized that the level of the effect of container, substrate, and time on community structures will be dependent on tidal level.
Paine (1969) and Dayton (1972) have demonstrated that the structure of some communities is largely determined by the effects of foundation, or keystone, species. It is suggested that the structure of classic-substrate communities may be determined similarly.
The Antibiogram As An Aid In The Identification Of The Klebsiella-Enterobacter-Serratia Group, Richard Keith Hall
The Antibiogram As An Aid In The Identification Of The Klebsiella-Enterobacter-Serratia Group, Richard Keith Hall
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine and evaluate the K-E-S group from this community with respect to distribution in clinical materials, detailed individual biochemical characteristics, and antibiogram patterns using the Bauer-Kirby disc technique, and compare these findings with those of other investigators from other geographic locations. As far as can be determined, this is the only study of its kind on the West Coast of the United States.
The Life Cycle Of Seven Species Of Drosophila, Miriam Marquez Marin De Flores
The Life Cycle Of Seven Species Of Drosophila, Miriam Marquez Marin De Flores
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this work is to determine the life cycle of different species of Drosophila of different subgenera and coming from different environments.
Visualization Of Neuronal Geometry In Ventral Nerve Cord Ganglia Of Acheta Domesticus, Gordon William Luke
Visualization Of Neuronal Geometry In Ventral Nerve Cord Ganglia Of Acheta Domesticus, Gordon William Luke
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The present is an attempt to show the pattern of innervation, or neuronal geometry, of various nerves leading to their respective ganglia (Fig. 1) and to obtain visualization of the finest terminal branches. A description of the cellular arrangement of a segmental ganglion would be of value in better understanding the results obtained when using the axonal iontophoresis method applied to the third through seventh ventral nerve cord ganglia. A segmental ganglion of the thorax or abdomen is usually an oval mass of nerve tissue, continuous with the interganglionic connectives (Fig. A). Two or three principal lateral nerves extend from …
The Functional Development Of The Adrenal-Sympathetic Nervous System In Neonatal And Adolescent Swine, Sidney Koon Hung Woo
The Functional Development Of The Adrenal-Sympathetic Nervous System In Neonatal And Adolescent Swine, Sidney Koon Hung Woo
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The development of the animal after birth is marked by complex changes. Certain periods are particularly important and have been defined as "critical periods" (Krecek, 1971). Two processes are important to the survival of the animals during these times. The process of "adaptation" involves the maturation of specific physiological systems according to the needs of the neonatal animal, and is dictated by the external environment. The process of "tolerance" renders the neonate relatively unresponsive to a stressor as compared to the adult and protects the animals from over-responding the depleting vital resources until it is physiologically mature. An example of …
The Ecology Of Some Harpacticoid Copepods Of A California Sand Flat, David R. Williams
The Ecology Of Some Harpacticoid Copepods Of A California Sand Flat, David R. Williams
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this study is to describe the population ecology of eight species of harpacticoid copepods over a period of one year with emphasis on the effects of physical interactions and biotic factors on these populations. The species were: Amphiascopsis sintus (Claus) 1866, Stenhelia (D.) oblonga Lang, 1965, Heterolaphote variables Lang, 1965, Ectinosoma melaniceps Boek ? var. T. Scott, 1902, Paralophonte subterraneas Lang, 1965, Tisbe furcata (Baird) 1837, Diasaccus spinatus Cambell, 1929 and Parathelestris bulbiseta Cambell?.
The Use Of Habit Reversal In Reducing Tics With Two Institutionalized Individuals, Phyllis Williamson
The Use Of Habit Reversal In Reducing Tics With Two Institutionalized Individuals, Phyllis Williamson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The possible application of habit reversal to mentally ill institutional residents has not been investigated. While habit reversal holds considerable promise as a treatment mode, due to its rapid success and patient involvement in controlling his-her own behavior, further research is in order. To investigate the generality of habit reversal to an institutionalized population, the present study utilized self-monitoring, which has been found to be effective with hospitalized patients, and habit reversal, which has been found to be effective with a non-hospitalized population, as a treatment package for eliminating nervous tics. There are four major purposes for doing this present …
Photoevoked Response Of The Optic Tectum In Larval Stage Xii And Juvenile Rana Catesbeiana, Michael Gale Phillips
Photoevoked Response Of The Optic Tectum In Larval Stage Xii And Juvenile Rana Catesbeiana, Michael Gale Phillips
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The previous cytological and electrophysiological work suggests that the optic tectum matures during metamorphic climax. It was the aim of the present work to attempt to compare pre metamorphic (Stage XII) larval and post metamorphic juvenile, Rana catesbeiana, using a photostimulated evoked electroencephalographic (E.E.G.) response in the optic tectum and correlate that with tissue studies to verify neurophysiological maturation of the optic tectum.
Correlations Of Some Physico-Chemical Factors With Cladocerans, Copepods, And Rotifers In Fourteenmile Slough, Stockton, California, John Kenneth Frey
Correlations Of Some Physico-Chemical Factors With Cladocerans, Copepods, And Rotifers In Fourteenmile Slough, Stockton, California, John Kenneth Frey
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine correlations between physico-chemical factors; between factors and particular species of zooplankton; between species of zooplankton; and between different locations in a dead-end slough. Fourteenmile Slough, located in northwest Stockton, California) was chosen as the location for this study.
