The Origin And Development Of Sclereids In The Leaves Of Camellia Reticulata Lindl, Chris Kelvin Kjeldsen

This study is concerned primarily with sclerenchymatous idioblasts. These idioblasts are polymorphic, and are commonly termed sclereids. The term sclereid is derived from the Greek work skleros (meaning hard). The hardness of sclereids and sclerenchyma tissue is due to their thickened cell walls, which are for the most part lignified. Their principal function is mechanical giving strength to plant tissue organs, therefore, enabling them to withstand various environmental stresses.

This paper deals with the foliar sclereid type of sclerenchymatous idioblast. The study of sclereids raises many of the fundamental problems of botany. Some of these are: growth and development, senescence …

Little information is available concerning the nematode parasites of salamanders in California. Lehmann (1954) reported the finding of Oxyuris dubia Leidy 1856, in the rectum of 33 Ensatine e. Eschscholtzii from Sonoma County, California, and in 3 of 10 Batrachoseps a. Attenuatus, from San Francisco County, California. He also reported Oxyuris magnivulvaris Rankin 1937 in the rectum of 1 to 2 Aneides flavipunctatus, from Marin County, California and Rhabdias sp., from lungs of 2 of 12 aquatic Triturus torosus from Contra Costa County, California. In August, 1959, Pacific Marine Station became an active participant in the California Co-operative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (C.C.O.F.I.). The program began in 1949 as an investigation of factors that might be associated with the disappearance of the California Sardine. Since that time, the general scope and purpose has broadened, and new information about the coastal water of California has been obtained. With each passing year, more information is being gathered and put to use. The location of structures within an organism and the chemical nature of these structures can be determined by cytochemical techniques. Further, such techniques may be used to demonstrate the presence of an enzyme or an enzyme system within the cell. This information can assist in the elucidation of metabolic pathways available to an organism. Despite the apparently large potential value of cytochemical information, few investigations of the cytochemistry of trypanosomes have been reported, and there are no reports available of studies upon cultural forms.

Work on the systematics of a large collection of Antarctic Pycnogohida has revealed very forcibly the limitations of existing systems of classification of this group. In an attempt to rectify some of these shortcomings for a monograph on the pycnogonid fauna of the Ross Sea area, the author has been led to seek new characters and character states which will be useful in taxonomy.

Virtually nothing is known of pycnogonid behaviour and ecology, and it seems unlikely that additional knowledge in these fields will be forthcoming in the near future. Our knowledge of pycnogonid comparative anatomy and histology is also …

During the summer of 1957 the writer became interested in water mites while collecting insects in an unnamed pond (see map in appendix) near Tomales, California. It was noted during that period that specimens of a giant water-bug, Lethocerus americanus Leidy (1847) had many larval mites attached to their ventral sides, and the lack of information concerning these animals and their life histories stimulated interest in investigating the problem detailed in this thesis. The large gumboot chiton, Cryptochiton stelleri, (Middendorf, 1846) annually undergoes a reproductive cycle terminated by spawning in the spring. Cryptochiton stelleri is one of the marine invertebrates which possess carotenoid prognosis. Cryptochiton acquired its carotenoid moiety from the algae upon which it feeds. Following digestion carotenoids are transported to various sites in the body. The mechanisms and routes of this transport, as well as the eventual fate of the carotenoids in nutrition, are unknown. Perhaps storage in the animal occurs because of an inability to eliminate the carotenoids. On the other hand, the presence of carotenoids in the gonads would …
