Coed sport environments can be paradoxical settings where pre-existing gender biases influence participants’ enjoyment and success. Furthermore, gendered messages and stereotypes as well as low expectations for females within coed sports can create participation barriers by reducing feelings of confidence and performance. Within Campus Recreation, intramural sport administrators have a significant role in determining participation opportunities and experiences. In vitro maturation (IVM) is a reproductive technique critical to in vitro embryo production (IVP) in commercial livestock industries, research, and human infertility treatment. Currently, IVP has low efficiency due to an inadequate IVM system in which premature meiotic resumption results in low oocyte viability. Meiotic arrest is regulated primarily by 3’,5’-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), and the most successful methods of improving IVM utilize cAMP modulators to maintain high intra-oocyte cAMP, delaying the onset of maturation. Leaf scald, caused by Xanthomonas albilineans, is a major sugarcane disease worldwide that is controlled primarily with host plant resistance. Since visual evaluation of disease resistance can be uncertain due to erratic symptom expression, a more reliable screening method is needed for resistance research. A quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay was developed previously with demonstrated potential for resistance screening. However, only four cultivars with extreme reaction against the disease (two highly susceptible and two highly resistant) were compared. Abstract Purpose: To determine effects of 8 wks of progressive whole-body training preceded by 4 wks of regional specific (RSTS) or aerobic training (AT), on bone mineral density (BMD). Methods: Subjects were over age 70 y, with a 6-min walk score of 218-490 m. Subjects were randomized to AT or RSTS for the first 4 wks (Phase 1). AT consisted of ~45 min of walking/biking (50-85% HR reserve), 3 d/wk. There are many threats that contribute to the decline in honey bee colonies around the United States; among them is the Varroa mite, Varroa destructor. The Varroa mite is a significant threat to honey bees and, by extension, beekeepers across the United States. It is suspected to be one of the main contributors to the increase in colony collapse and the decline in bee numbers and the beekeeping industry (Danka, May 2013). Bacterial panicle blight, caused by Burkholderia glumae, is a major bacterial disease of rice in Louisiana. This bacterium contains several virulence factors required for disease development such as toxoflavin, lipase and flagella. In a genome-wide search for regulatory factors related to the virulence of B. glumae, tepR was identified as a negative regulator for toxoflavin production and found to encode a sigma 54-dependent response regulator. TepR is homologous to LuxO, a quorum-sensing signaling component of Vibrio spp. A markerless tepR deletion mutant of B. glumae 336gr-1, LSUPB401, produced more toxoflavin and showed higher lipase and protease activities compared to the …

Nationwide, seafood consumers are paying close attention to their seafood options and demanding transparency on point of origin. Recent studies have shown that shrimp can reflect the mineral content of the waters from which they are harvested. Mineral analysis was conducted using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry on the tail muscle from each coastal group and imported farmed raised samples. In 2011 and 2012, 100 residential lawns in the Baton Rouge, LA area were sampled to document the incidence of plant-parasitic nematodes, in addition four full-season microplot experiments and four 71-day duration greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate their pathogenicity on St. Augustine and centipede turfgrasses. Nematode genera associated with both turfgrasses included Criconemella, Helicotylenchus, Meloidogyne, Pratylenchus, Tylenchorynchus and Tylenchus spp. In microplot trials in 2012, nematodes did not cause significant damage to either turfgrass, but soil exhibited an effect on plant growth parameters. Introduction: Eighty percent restriction of normal dietary methionine (MR) intake has been shown to increase energy expenditure and attenuate the rate of adiposity gain in rodents, despite a paradoxical increase in energy intake. Energy expenditure in rats was shown to increase, even though physical activity level stays the same. This observation suggests that metabolic mechanisms account for the majority of increased energy expenditure measured in methionine restricted animals. Golden Veined Oxalis, geranium (Pelargonium peltatum) cv. Crocodile, pseuderanthemum (Pseuderanthemum carruthersii) cv. Golden Net Bush (narrow leaf and broad leaf variants), honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) cv. Yellow Net Honeysuckle and coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides) cv. In a three essay thesis format, I explore the factors affecting migration decision and migration destination choices. A Quantitative And Molecular Evaluation Of Calves Sired By Three Different Breeds For Growth, Performance, And Carcass Traits, Malcolm Seth Mizell

The first objective of the two studies in the research herein was to evaluate growth, performance and carcass quality and composition traits from a group of spring born calves sired by Charolais, Braunvieh, or Simmental bulls. Growth traits analyzed included birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), and hip height (HH). Carcass quality and composition traits analyzed included hot carcass weight (HCW), rib eye area (REA), back fat thickness (BF), marbling score (MS), and yield grade (YG). Analysis revealed Simmental sired calves were significantly heavier (P<.05) at birth when compared to Charolais and Braunvieh sired calves. Braunvieh sired calves were reported to be significantly (P<.05) shorter than Simmental sired calves for hip height. Hot carcass weight analysis revealed that Charolais sired calves were significantly (P<.05) heavier when compared to Braunvieh sired calves. No individual sire breed group displayed any significant differences for weaning weight, rib eye area, back fat thickness, marbling score, or yield grade. The second objective was evaluate potential SNP associations on four candidate genes with growth, performance, and carcass composition traits in a population of crossbred steers sired by Charolais, Braunvieh, and Simmental bulls. Traits analyzed for growth, performance, and carcass traits were previously mentioned. Analysis was performed on 38 steer calves. Single nucleotide polymorphisms within four candidate genes including Thyroglobulin (TG), Adiponectin (ADPOQ), Insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and Calpastatin (CAST) were chosen for analysis. A total of 14 SNP on TG, ADPOQ, CAST, and IGF-1 genes were significantly associated with birth weight and weaning weight. Analysis revealed 13 SNP on TG, ADPOQ, IGF-1, and CAST genes significantly associated (P<.05) with HCW, BF, MS, and YG. No markers were reported to be significantly associated (P<.05) with HH or REA. A total of 11 markers with 3 markers located on the ADPOQ gene, 1 marker located on the IGF-1 gene, 3 markers located on the TG gene, and 5 markers located on the CAST gene were significantly associated with both growth and carcass traits.

Secondary data on cost and earnings from a 2012 survey of inshore Louisiana shrimpers was used as the foundation this partial budget analysis examining the feasibility of supplementing direct marketing (DM) strategies for Louisianan shrimp harvesters. Refinement of key variables for the analysis was conducted using supplemental surveys in 2014 of DM shrimp harvesters and DM consumers. The DM harvester survey (n= 72) produced information on actual price per pound for DM shrimp, as well as catch grade distribution, product marketing mix, and labor estimates. ABSTRACT Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) was generally considered as a hospital-associated disease; however, recent studies indicated that foods might also play a role in its epidemical chain. From August-2013 to February-2014, oyster samples and harvesting water samples were collected monthly from 6 commercial oyster harvesting areas along Louisiana Gulf Coast and analyzed for total aerobic bacteria, fecal coliforms, coliphage and pathogenic C. difficile. In this study, C. difficile were isolated from 9 (47.37%) of 19 oyster samples and 3 (37.5%) of 8 harvesting water samples and all isolations were carrying the toxin B-encoding gene (tcdB). Antioxidants have attracted great interests from food industries and scientists in recent years, because they have the capacity to reduce the harmful oxidation reaction in human body. Phenolic compounds are the common antioxidants that are widely found in fruits and vegetables. In this study, three varieties of potatoes and four varieties of sweet potatoes were used to examine the profiles and contents of phenolics in the raw and boiled potatoes and sweet potatoes. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is a target pest of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn in North and South America. In this study, multiple tests were conducted in the laboratory and greenhouse to 1) determine the susceptibility of two field populations of S. frugiperda collected from Florida (FL) and Puerto Rico (PR) to purified Cry1F protein and Bt corn leaf tissue and 2) evaluate larval survival of and plant injury by Cry1F-susceptible, -resistant, and –heterozygous genotypes of S. frugiperda on whole plants of transgenic corn containing single and pyramided Bt genes. Bacterial panicle blight is among the three most limiting diseases of rice production in the United States. Yield loss up to 40% has been reported from rice fields severely infested with bacterial panicle blight. The disease is caused by Burkholderia glumae and B. gladioli. Although, both species produce similar symptoms and are closely related, but B. glumae strains are more aggressive and cause more severe symptoms on rice. Bacterial panicle bight is difficult to manage in the absence of effective chemical control measures. Rapid and early disease detection is needed to avoid severe yield losses. The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)) is a major pest targeted by transgenic corn expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins in both North and South America. The objective of this study was to characterize the inheritance and fitness costs of the Cry1F resistance in two fall armyworm populations collected from Puerto Rico (RR-PR) and Florida (RR-FL). To determine the inheritance of the resistance, besides RR-PR, RR-FL, and a Cry1F-susceptible population (Bt-SS), 14 other populations were developed by reciprocal crosses, F1 by F1 crosses, backcrosses, and crosses between RR-PR and RR-FL.
