Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

A total of 95 mixed parity sows (DNA 241) and litters (DNA 241 × 600) were used across four batch farrowing groups to evaluate the effects of precision feeding Lys during lactation. Sows were blocked by parity and allotted to 1 of 3 treatments on day 2 (the day after farrowing) of lactation. Dietary treatments were formed by using 2 diets: a low Lys diet (0.25% SID Lys) and a high Lys diet (1.10% SID Lys). Treatments included a control, NRC (2012), or INRA (2009) treatment curve. Sows on the NRC or INRA treatment curves received a blend of the …

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

A total of 600 mixed parity sows (PIC, Line 3) were used to evaluate the effect of different lactation feeders and drip cooling on lactating sow farrowing performance and litter growth performance during summer conditions. For the lactation feeder evaluation, the trial was conducted in 2 sequential groups with 300 sows per group in the same facility in central Arkansas. Five rooms with 60 farrowing stalls per room were used for each group. At approximately d 110 to 112 of gestation, sows were blocked by body condition score (BCS), parity, and offspring genetics (Line 2 or Line 3 sires). Sows …

At approximately d 112 of gestation, sows were blocked by parity within farrowing room and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 experimental treatments. Lactation diets were corn-soybean meal-wheat-based and included 0.5 (Control) or 3% choice white grease (CWG), 3% soybean oil (SO), or a combination of 3% soybean oil and 2% choice white grease (Combination). Thus, sows were provided diets with low essential fatty acid (EFA; …

A total of 360 weaned pigs (DNA 241 × 600: initially 12.6 lb) were used to evaluate the effects of previous sow feed flavoring treatment (control vs. flavor) and nursery diets formulated with or without a feed flavor on growth performance in a 38-d trial. Pigs were weaned at approximately 19 d from sows fed diets with or without 0.05% of the feed flavor (Krave AP, Adisseo, Alpharetta, GA). Pigs were placed in pens (5 to 6 pigs per pen) within sow treatment and were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 dietary nursery treatments. There were 14 to 17 replications …

A total of 27 sows (Line 241; DNA Genetics) were used in a study to evaluate the effect of feeding live yeast and yeast extracts to lactating sows on antimicrobial susceptibilities of fecalE. coli. Sows were blocked by BW and parity on d 110 of gestation and allotted to 1 of 2 dietary treatments. Dietary treatments consisted of a standard corn-soybean meal lactation diet or a diet that contained yeast-based pre- and probiotics (0.10% Actisaf Sc 47 HR+ and 0.025% SafMannan; Phileo by Lesaffre, Milwaukee, WI). Diets were fed from d 110 of gestation until weaning (approximately d …

A total of 69 sows (DNA Line 200 × 400) and their progeny were used to determine if feeding a combination of vitamin D3(Rovimix D3, 500,000 IU/g; DSM Nutritional Products, Parsippany, NJ) and 25(OH)D3(Hy-D, DSM Nutritional Products, Parsippany, NJ) influences neonatal and sow vitamin D3 status, muscle fiber morphometrics and development of the piglets, and subsequent growth performance to market. Within 3 days of breeding, sows were allotted to 1 of 3 dietary treatments fortified with 680 IU/lb vitamin D3(CON), 227 IU/lb vitamin D3+ 11.3 μg/lb 25(OH)D3(DL), or …

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

The effects of parity and stage of gestation on female growth criteria and reproductive performance were evaluated at a commercial sow farm. A total of 712 females (Camborough, PIC, Hendersonville, TN) were group-housed and individually fed with electronic sow feeders. Gilts (parity 1) and sows were offered 4.4 and 5.0 lb of feed per day (4.7 and 5.3 Mcal NE per d), respectively. Females were moved from the breeding stall to pens on d 5 of gestation. A scale was located in the alleyway to weigh sows as they left individual feeding stations. Feed intake and BW were recorded daily …

The Effects Of Feeding Benzoic Acid And Essential Oils On Sows And Litter Performance, M. T. Thayer, J. L. Nelssen, A. Langemeier, J. Morton, Z. Ou, J. R. Bergstrom

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

A total of 48 sows (DNA Line 200 × 400) and their progeny were used in this study to determine if feeding sows and/or piglets benzoic acid (VevoVitall, DSM Nutritional Products, Parsippany, NJ) paired with an essential oil blend (CRINA, DSM Nutritional Products, Parsippany, NJ) enhances sow and pig performance during lactation, piglet weight gain in the nursery, and survivability to market. For sow and preweaned piglet performance in the farrowing house, adding benzoic acid and an essential oil blend to the maternal diet did not affect (P>0.05) litter performance or weaning weight of the piglets. Fecal swabbing litters …

A total of 712 females (Camborough, PIC, Hendersonville, TN) were group-housed from d 5 to 112 of gestation and individually fed with electronic sow feeders (ESF). Feed intake and BW were recorded daily throughout gestation via the ESF and a scale located in an alleyway just after sows exited the feeding station. Gilts (parity 1) and sows received 6.5 and 7.3 Mcal ME per d. Maternal …

Generating An Equation To Predict Post- Farrow Maternal Weight In Multiple Parity Sows, L. L. Thomas, S. S. Dritz, R. D. Goodband, M. D. Tokach, J. M. Derouchey, J. C. Woodworth Jan 2016

Generating An Equation To Predict Post- Farrow Maternal Weight In Multiple Parity Sows, L. L. Thomas, S. S. Dritz, R. D. Goodband, M. D. Tokach, J. M. Derouchey, J. C. Woodworth

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

ost-farrow maternal weight is required when partitioning maternal and fetal weight gains throughout gestation. Equations were developed from the analysis of 150 females (Line 1050, PIC, Hendersonville, TN) to predict the weight of conceptus by difference of pre- and post-farrowing weight change in multi-parity sows. Females were individually weighed as they were moved into the farrowing house at d 110 to 112 of gestation and again at 12 to 24 h after farrowing. Data were divided into 4 groups: (1) parity 1 sows; (2) parity 2 sows; (3) parity 3 sows; and (4) parity 4+ sows. Each group tested 3 …

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

A total of 111 primiparous sows (Line 241; DNA, Columbus, NE) were used in a 21-d study to determine the effect of lysine (Lys) intake during lactation on sow and litter performance and subsequent reproductive performance of primiparous sows. At d 110 of gestation, sows were weighed and randomly assigned to treatment based on weight block. Dietary treatments consisted of increasing levels of standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys (0.80, 0.95, 1.10, and 1.25% with other AA meeting or exceeding NRC [2012] recommendations as a ratio to Lys). All other nutrients met or exceeded the NRC (2012) estimates. During the lactation …
