Reports
The literature, minutes of conference, data reports and other records, pertaining to the 1963 Chesapeake Bay fish kills has been reviewed in detail. Data concerning the few 1964 fish kills in Virginia waters are also appended. The various theories concerning the cause(s) of the kills have been carefully examined. All evidence indicates that the fishes killed, died as a result of interaction between unfavorable environmental factors and, in most species, bacterial disease (protozoan disease in 1964). Among the likely environmental stresses involved were: 1) severe hydroclimate, rapidly changing temperatures, high salinities due to drought, 2) low and high oxygens, 3) …

Frequencies Of Infaunal Invertebrates Related To Water Content Of Chesapeake Bay Sediments, W. Harrison, Marvin L. Wass
VIMS Articles
The following relationship was investigated for a total of 44 stations, using sequential (linear) multiregression analysis: A = f (D, S a , S i., C, M z, S o , W) 1 z o where A = the frequency of an infaual invertebrate species, D : water depth at the station, Sa = per cent sand, Si =percent silt, C = per cent clay, Mz = mean grain size, S o = sediment Sorting Coefficient, and W = water content. Three animals were chosen for the dependent variable: Ensis directus, Nephtys incisa, and Retusa canaliculata. Results of the least-squares …

Catch And Value Of The Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab 1880 -1960, Willard A. Van Engel, Frank J. Wojcik
Catch And Value Of The Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab 1880 -1960, Willard A. Van Engel, Frank J. Wojcik
Reports
The aim of this report is to compile in a compact form for ready reference numerous data pertinent to the blue crab fisheries of Virginia and Maryland. The need for such a compilation became evident when an attempt was made to evaluate the usefulness of those data as indices of past abundance, and it was realized that many publications had to be referred to in order to cover the field even partially.

License Records Of The Blue Crab Fisheries, Virginia And Maryland, 1898-1960, Willard A. Van Engel, Frank J. Wojcik
Reports
Gear used in the Virginia and Maryland blue crab fisheries have been regulated since 1989. Numbers of fishermen and kinds of fishing devices have been reported in official state publications, in Virginia from 1899 through 1941 and in Maryland from 1916 to date. Unfortunately, these reports have sometimes been incomplete. The fact that Virginia licenses have been reported by fiscal year and Maryland's by calendar year, has made analysis and comparison difficult. The most complete Virginia record was extracted from files of the Commission of Fisheries, and is made available here for the first time, for the calendar years 1920 …
Catch And Value Of Various American Crustaceans 1929-1960, Willard A. Van Engel, Frank J. Wojcik
Catch And Value Of Various American Crustaceans 1929-1960, Willard A. Van Engel, Frank J. Wojcik
Reports
Occasional reference has been made to the relative magnitude of the catch of the blue crab in waters outside Chesapeake Bay, yet comparisons are not easily made unless data are readily available. Both parallel and opposite trends in catch have been observed. These could be reflections of the amount of fishing effort or the size of the crab stocks. Comparable records of other crustacean fisheries are often of interest. Compilations are given here of data on crabs, shrimp and lobsters originally published in "Fishery Industries of the United States" and "Fishery Statistics of the United States".

Check List Of The Marine Invertebrates Of Virginia, Marvin L. Wass
Reports
This list is the third revision of a preliminary list compiled by Dr. Willis G. Hewatt in 1959. This latest revision has been shortened by the deletion of most oceanic species. Conversely, a number of estuarine species have been added through further work. Those species known from the published work of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, Solomons Island, Maryland, have been included.
For several groups the list should be quite complete; for others, such as the amphipods, of which there are 21 unidentified species in the VIMS collection, much taxonomic work remains. Since many species have been identified only by the …
