Aggregate Stability And Water Retention Near Saturation Characteristics As Affected By Soil Texture, Aggregate Size And Polyacrylamide Application, Amrakh I. Mamedov, Chi-Hua Huang, Fazil A. Aliev, Guy J. Levy

Biology Publications

Understanding the effects of soil intrinsic properties and extrinsic conditions on aggregate stability is essential for the development of effective soil and water conservation practices. Our objective was to evaluate the combined role of soil texture, aggregate size and application of a stabilizing agent on aggregate and structure stability indices (composite structure index [SI], the and n parameters of the VG model and the S-index) by employing the high energy (0-5.0 J kg(-1)) moisture characteristic (HEMC) method. We used aggregates of three sizes (0.25-0.5, 0.5-1.0 and 1.0-2.0 mm) from four semi-arid soils treated with polyacrylamide (PAM). An increase in SI ā€¦

Thompson, Trevor M. Faske, Nana Banahene, Dominique Grim, Salvatore J. Agosta, Dylan Parry, Patrick C. Tobin, Derek M. Johnson, Kristine L. Grayson

Biology Publications

Variation in thermal performance within and between populations provides the potential for adaptive responses to increasing temperatures associated with climate change. Organisms experiencing temperatures above their optimum on a thermal performance curve exhibit rapid declines in function and these supraoptimal temperatures can be a critical physiological component of range limits. The gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae), is one of the best-documented biological invasions and factors driving its spatial spread are of significant ecological and economic interest. The present study examines gypsy moth sourced from different latitudes across its North American range for sensitivity to high temperature in constant ā€¦

Individually Markā€“Mass Releaseā€“Resight Study Elucidates Effects Of Patch Characteristics And Distance On Host Patch Location By An Insect Herbivore, Zeynep Sezen, Derek M. Johnson, Katriona Shea

Biology Publications

1. How organisms locate their hosts is of fundamental importance in a variety of basic and applied ecological fields, including population dynamics, invasive species management and biological control. However, tracking movement of small organisms, such as insects, poses significant logistical challenges.

2. Mass-release and individualā€“markā€“recapture techniques were combined in an individually markā€“mass releaseā€“resight (IMMRR) approach to track the movement of over 2000 adult insects in an economically important plantā€“herbivore system. Despite its widespread use for the biological control of the invasive thistle Carduus nutans, the host-finding behaviour of the thistle head weevil Rhinocyllus conicus has not previously been studied. ā€¦

Functional Responses Canā€™T Unify Invasion Ecology, James Vonesh, Mike Mccoy, Res Altwegg, Pietro Landi, John Measey

Biology Publications

Dick et al. (Biol Invasions, 2017) propose that the comparative functional response framework provides a unifying approach for the study of invasive species. We agree that functional responses are an important and powerful quantitative description of consumer effects on resources, and co-opting classical ecological theory to better predict invasive species impacts is a laudable move for invasion biology. However, we fear that the early successes of select examples of the comparative functional response (CFR) approach has led Dick et al. to exaggerate the generality of its utility, and about its ability to unify the field. Further, they fail to provide ā€¦

Nerve Conduction Through Dendrites Via Proton Hopping, Lemont B. Kier Jan 2017

Nerve Conduction Through Dendrites Via Proton Hopping, Lemont B. Kier

Biology Publications

Background: In our previous studies of nerve conduction conducted by proton hopping, we have considered the axon, soma, synapse and the nodes of Ranvier. The role of proton hopping described the passage of information through each of these units of a typical nerve system. The synapse projects information from the axon to the dendrite and their associated spines.

Methods: We have invoked the passage of protons via a hopping mechanism to illustrate the continuum of the impulse through the system, via the soma following the dendrites. This is proposed to be a continuum invoked by the proton hopping method.

Results: ā€¦

Minionā„¢ Nanopore Sequencing Of Environmental Metagenomes: A Synthetic Approach, Bonnie L. Brown, Mick Watson, Samuel S. Minot, Maria C. Rivera, Rima B. Franklin

Biology Publications

Environmental metagenomic analysis is typically accomplished by assigning taxonomy and/or function from whole genome sequencing or 16S amplicon sequences. Both of these approaches are limited, however, by read length, among other technical and biological factors. A nanopore-based sequencing platform, MinIONā„¢, produces reads that are ā‰„1 Ɨ 104 bp in length, potentially providing for more precise assignment, thereby alleviating some of the limitations inherent in determining metagenome composition from short reads. We tested the ability of sequence data produced by MinION (R7.3 flow cells) to correctly assign taxonomy in single bacterial species runs and in three types of low-complexity synthetic communities: ā€¦

The Potential Role Of Aerobic Exercise-Induced Pentraxin 3 On Obesity-Related Inflammation And Metabolic Dysregulation, Aaron L. Slusher, Chun-Jung Huang, Edmund O. Acevedo

Kinesiology and Health Sciences Publications

Obesity is defined as the excess accumulation of intra-abdominal body fat, resulting in a state of chronic, low-grade proinflammation that can directly contribute to the development of insulin resistance. Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is an acute-phase protein that is expressed by a variety of tissue and cell sources and provides an anti-inflammatory property to downregulate the production of proinflammatory cytokines, in particular interleukin-1 beta and tumor necrosis factor alpha. Although PTX3 may therapeutically aid in altering the proinflammatory milieu in obese individuals, and despite elevated expression of PTX3 mRNA observed in adipose tissue, the circulating level of PTX3 is reduced with ā€¦

A Closer Look At Rural-Urban Health Disparities: Associations Between Obesity And Rurality Vary By Geospatial And Sociodemographic Factors, Steven A. Cohen, Sarah K. Cook, Lauren Kelley, Julia D. Foutz, Trisha A. Sando

Kinesiology and Health Sciences Publications

Background: Obesity affects over one-third of older adults in the United States. Both aging and obesity contribute to an increased risk for chronic disease, early mortality, and additional health care utilization. Obesity rates are higher in rural areas than in urban areas, although findings are mixed. The objectives of this study are to assess potential nonlinearity in the association between rurality and obesity, and to evaluate the potential for socioeconomic status and geographic area to moderate the associations between rurality and obesity.

Methods: Using a representative sample of adults aged 65 and above from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, ā€¦

Kinesiology and Health Sciences Publications

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is associated with obesity and, indirectly, with unhealthy diet. The role of dietary components in HFpEF is, however, largely unknown. In this study, the authors showed that in obese HFpEF patients, consumption of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), was associated with better cardiorespiratory fitness, and UFA consumption correlated with better diastolic function and with greater fat-free mass. Similarly, mice fed with a high-fat diet rich in UFA and low in sugars had preserved myocardial function and reduced weight gain. Randomized clinical trials increasing dietary UFA consumption and reducing sugar consumption are warranted to confirm ā€¦

Biophysical Drivers Of Carbon Dioxide And Methane Fluxes In A Restored Tidal Freshwater Wetland, Ellen Stuart-Haƫntjens, Scott C. Neubauer, William Shuart, Christopher M. Gough

Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium

Wetlands store large amounts of carbon (C) in biomass and soils, playing a crucial role in offsetting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; however, they also account for 30% of global yearly CH4 emissions. Anthropogenic disturbance has led to the decline of natural wetlands throughout the United States, with a corresponding increase in created and restored wetlands. Studies characterizing biogeochemical processes in restored forested wetlands, particularly those that are both tidal and freshwater, are lacking but essential for informing science- based carbon management.

Characterization Of Legacy Sediment Variations In Accretion And Carbon Dynamics Following Dam Removal In A Recently Restored Tidal Freshwater Wetland, Melissa J. Davis, Christopher D. Gatens, Edward R. Crawford, Arif Sikder

Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium

Damming disrupts the natural flow of sediment to adjoining water bodies resulting in the accumulation of Legacy Sediments (LS). While the impact of LS inputs has been well investigated in lotic Mid-Atlantic piedmont stream restorations, (i.e. milldam removal 1,2,3,4,5,), there have been few studies investigating LS following dam removal in low-gradient coastal plain streams. The objectives of this study were to quantify spatial and temporal variations of LS characteristics in a low-gradient tidal stream restoration within the lower James River watershed. Secondary objectives were to assess the current temporal and spatial variability in sediment deposition within the recently restored Kimages ā€¦

The Effect Of Combined Sewer Overflow (Cso) On The Abundance Of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In The James River, Enjolie Levengood, Sunauz Moezzi, Rima B. Franklin

Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium

Antibiotics have been used to treat bacterial infections worldwide since their discovery in the early 20th century and are vital to human health. Unfortunately, the heavy use of antibiotics has led to the increased natural selection of antibiotic resistant bacteria. In urban rivers, the spread of resistance resistance is through through the direct acquisition of resistance genes by either either either cell-to -cell contact or DNA uptake via a process called horizontal gene transfer transfer(HGT) 2.HGT, resistance genes, and resistant bacteria are in greater abundance in wastewater systems, and are released into the environment in wastewater plant effluent2,3. One problematic ā€¦

Spatial Distribution Modelling Of Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria Citrea) On Breeding Grounds, Elli Bosch, Caitlin M. Vigneau, Rolang Piocuda, Catherine Viverette, Jessica Reese Jan 2017

Spatial Distribution Modelling Of Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria Citrea) On Breeding Grounds, Elli Bosch, Caitlin M. Vigneau, Rolang Piocuda, Catherine Viverette, Jessica Reese

Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium

Ecological niche modeling is used to predict a speciesā€™ distribution in a geographic area based on abiotic and biotic variables. Understanding a speciesā€™ range is important for conservation and restoration efforts. As anthropogenic forces may alter or deplete habitat, it is important to know the ecological requirements of a species to understand how and what habitat to protect. With the increasing threat of climate change and rising temperature and precipitation, the suitable habitat and the distribution for many species is expected to shift. Migratory species are particularly at risk of these changes as they require suitable habitat not only on ā€¦

Identifying Biotic Determinants Of Historic American Eel (Anguilla Rostrata) Distributions, Taylor E. Woods, Daniel J. Mcgarvey

Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium

Traditionally, ecologists studying large scale patterns in species distributions emphasize abiotic variables over biotic interactions. Noting that both abiotic & biotic variables likely determine distributions of all organisms, many ecologists now aim for a more comprehensive view of species distributions, inclusive of both abiotic and biotic components (SoberĆ³n 2007).

Offspring Sex Ratio In Double Brooding Prothonotary Warblers, Radleigh Herschel, Anthony G. Kouri, Rebecca Vareed, Stephanie Warshawsky, Matthew Desaix Jan 2017

Offspring Sex Ratio In Double Brooding Prothonotary Warblers, Radleigh Herschel, Anthony G. Kouri, Rebecca Vareed, Stephanie Warshawsky, Matthew Desaix

Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium

Prothonotary warblers are bright, golden birds who, with their loud calls, make themselves known in wetland habitats in the spring after returning from their winter homes in the Neotropics to breed. This migratory species is important to study because of their need for these habitats and are declining in population due to the degradation of wetland environments across the western hemisphere.

VCU started a project in 1987 to study prothonotary warblers including population genetics, breeding biology, and migration ecology. Since then, with the help of Richmond Audubon Society, the project has erected over 600 nesting boxes along the James River ā€¦

Projecting Habitat Of The Nonbreeding Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria Citrea) Under Various Climate Scenarios, Hannah Byrne, Lindsey Flanary, Ernesto Gagarin, Jessica A. Reese, Catherine B. Viverette

Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium

Understanding a speciesā€™ range, and how it may change over time, allows researchers to develop more robust species management plans and to identify vital habitat for conservation planning. For migratory bird species, different habitats are utilized during different times of year. While a neotropical migratory speciesā€™ breeding grounds may be adequate, its wintering ground or various stopover areas may be under threat. In what is known as a carry over effect, the degradation of wintering grounds can lead to poor quality individuals in the breeding range (Rockwell et al., 2012), thus reduced fitness.

The tropics are predicted to experience changes ā€¦

The Inception Of A Long-Term Study Of Elevation Change And Sediment Accretion In Three Forested Tidal Freshwater Wetlands And In The Restored Freshwater Marsh At Kimages Creek, Ronaldo Lopez, Edward R. Crawford, Scott C. Neubauer, Jessica Anne Powell, Sean Weber Jan 2017

Neubauer, Jessica Anne Powell, Sean Weber

Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium

Sediment accretion and the corresponding ability to keep pace with sea level rise in both mature forested tidal freshwater wetlands and restored wetland sites represent significant data gaps in the current body of literature pertaining to wetland sustainability. In order to address these data gaps, Surface Elevation Tables (SETs) were installed along with feldspar marker horizons to measure contemporary sediment accretion rates in three mature forested tidal freshwater wetlands, as well as accretion within a tidal marsh currently undergoing restoration. These are the first SETs installed in tidal forests in the James River watershed, and establish VCU Rice Rivers Center ā€¦

The Effects Of Inorganic Nitrogen And Phosphorus Enrichment On Herbaceous Species Growth Of The Kimages Creek Wetland (Va), Kristen Burton, Scott C. Neubauer Jan 2017

The Effects Of Inorganic Nitrogen And Phosphorus Enrichment On Herbaceous Species Growth Of The Kimages Creek Wetland (Va), Kristen Burton, Scott C. Neubauer

Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium

Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) infiltrate waterways through fertilizer application, urban stormwater runoff, and sewer infrastructure leaks. As surrounding waterbodies experience increased DIN and DIP inputs, wetlands can experience corresponding nutrient enrichment. Vegetation uses DIN and DIP for structural growth, color, and seed production. Changes in DIN and DIP availability can influence species distribution due to differences in photosynthetic rates, root morphology and structure, and tissue type.

DIP and DIN inputs are projected to increase 15-30% and 30-60% in the next fifty yearsĀ¹. It is of interest to examine plant growth characteristics within this nutrient enrichment ā€¦
