Present and potential fruit farmers are asking the question, "How much do I have invested in an acre of fruit by the time the trees are old enough to produce a paying crop?" or "How much would I have to invest to bring an acre of young trees into production?" Sometimes the question is "How much do trees add to the value of bare land?" or "How much value must I depreciate my trees each year to recover my investment by the time their productive life has passed?"

Operation And Management Guides For A Dairy Manufacturing Plant, Mohammad Valanejad
Operation And Management Guides For A Dairy Manufacturing Plant, Mohammad Valanejad
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The dairy and food industries have become highly technical and almost completely mechanized. They also ranked as one of the greatest industries in the country at the present time and represent an investment of many billions of dollars.
The rigid health department regulations, together with the special processes required, call for many types of specialized equipments and procedures. Most of the processes require heat, power, and refrigeration. More exact control of processes, as well as more efficient operation, have become increasingly important as these industries have matured and as competition has become keener. Material handling and automation are major developments …

Pakistan came into existence on August 14, 1947, by the partitioning of what was British India. The basis for the division was the desire of the Moslem population of India to form a sovereign state. Since the country was established in the sections of India which were predominantly Moslem, Pakistan emerged in the form of two blocks, East and West Pakistan. They are two provinces separated from each other by over 1000 miles.
The Importance Of Farm Management In The Under-Developed Economics, Hardev Singh Dhaliwal
The Importance Of Farm Management In The Under-Developed Economics, Hardev Singh Dhaliwal
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Throughout the history of mankind there always have been famines, disease, and poverty in some parts of the world, and this has been because of economic under - development to a great extent. For nearly a century after the publication of Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" in 1776, economic development was the main interest of economists . In the late nineteenth century, Europe, America, and Australia were developing rapidly and few people were interested in raising the incomes of Africans, Arabs, and Asians . Most of the countries in Africa and Asia were under European colonial rule, and being so, …

Physiological And Biochemical Factors Influencing The Quality Of Canned And Freeze-Dehydrated Applesauce, Yuen San Lee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Applesauce has long been considered an important food product in the United States. Approximately 25 percent of the fresh apples used by the industry in the U.S. are converted into sauce. Recent statistics indicated a further increase in consumption (Canning Trade Almanac, 1964). The reason why so large portion of the crop have been utilized for sauce manufacture is that we can use the desirable varieties for blending techniques in making sauce, and its fine particle character has some advantages as a kind of baby food.
According to the U.S. standard grades of canned applesauce, Grade A (Fancy) applesauce should …

A Survey Of The State Of Utah For Areas Infested With The Stem Nematode Of Alfalfa, Dwayne R. Buxton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Plant nematodes belong to a large group of invertebrates known as round worms, They derive their name from the Greek word "nema," meaning thread. In literature some authors refer to nematodes as nemas. In England and many parts of the United States, plant-parasitic nematodes are called eelworms.
While some damage to plants results from mechanical injury, salivary secretions injected by the nematode into the plant are usually the major cause of damage. Experiments conducted in the first part of the present century have demonstrated large differences in plant growth in soil infested with nematodes and soil freed of nematodes by …

Investigations involving the fluorinated pyrimidine, 5-fluorouracil, and its effects on viruses, bacteria, plants and mammals, have brought to light the following facts: FU inhibits the growth of bacteria, plants and mammalian cells and it decreases the ability of certain viruses to produce progeny. In other words, FU is an antimetabolite that inhibits growth and/or reproduction. Two mechanisms have emerged from these studies to define the mode of action of FU. The first mechanism involves the incorporation of the compound into the RNA of the organism thus altering the base sequence and creating a non functional or damaging nucleic acid. The …

Some Movements Of Black-Tailed Jackrabbits In Northern Utah, Donald H. Rusch
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This work describes the extent and pattern of some black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) movements and areas of activity in northern Utah and their relationship to sex and age, and season of the year.
Black-tailed jackrabbits are the most common lagomorphs in much of the western United States, particularly in that vegetational association described by McDougal (1908) as the sagebrush desert. Furthermore, Adams and Adams (1959) have suggested a correlation between sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) incidence and jackrabbit density.
Farmers often regard this species as a liability because of its depredations on alfalfa (Medicago sativa), crested …
Effect Of Fluoride On Respiratory Enzymes In Soybean Leaves, Arthur Chiu-Eng Lee
Effect Of Fluoride On Respiratory Enzymes In Soybean Leaves, Arthur Chiu-Eng Lee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
There are many reports relating the effects of fluorides on plant respiration. Fluoride has been regarded as an inhibitor of respiration. Warburg et al. (1942) demonstrated that fluoride inhibited enolase activity, therefore, decreased the respiration rate of yeast. Miller (1958), found a similar inhibition of enolase from pea seed. Bonner (1948), Bonner and Wildman (1946), and Laties (1949) reported that the fluoride ion in culture solutions reduced the respiration rate in Avena Coleoptile, spinach leaves and barley roots. Since the inhibition was reversed by the addition of pyruvate, they concluded that the inhibition of respiration was due to the inactivation …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The fruit production industry is of significant economic importance in the state of Utah. The annual receipts by the producers of fruit is usually between $3,000,000 and $5,000,000 according to Utah Agricultural Statistics (1963). With the farmer receiving only about 38 percent of the consumer's dollar this amounts to approximately $9,000,000 to $15,000,000 total contribution by the fruit industry. The recent trend, however, is a slight reduction in acreage, number of farms, and total production of fruit.
One of the major problems of the fruit industry and all agriculture in the state is the small size of the farms. In …

A Longitudinal Study: The Relationship Of Various Physical Characteristics To Serum Cholesterol In Preadolescents And Adolescents, Carol Ann Milligan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Although many theories have been formulated concerning atherosclerosis and its relationship to the incidence of coronary heart disease, few actual facts are known. It is known that atherosclerosis is very complex and appears to be influenced by many factors. It is postulated that an elevated serum cholesterol level is one predisposing factor.
Serum cholesterol levels are likewise influenced by many factors. Age, sex, body build, exercise, socio-economic levels, smoking, health status, weight loss or gain, dietary fat, endocrine function, and stress have been shown to be related to serum cholesterol levels, and according to some authors also are related to …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Providing adequate outdoor recreational opportunities to the public is now a national problem. Of the many influences affecting the demand for recreation, increased income, population increase, sociological changes, and rapidly increasing technological developments are the more important. In the face of these factors, we must plan better to insure sufficient future needs. This will require evaluation and development of many recreation opportunities.
The Bear Lake are of northeastern Utah and southeastern Idaho is situated along U.S. 89 and within close driving distance of much of Utah's population. Up to the present there has been little orderly or planned development of …

Cacodylic Acid As A Silvicide, Maurice W. Day
Aspen Bibliography
This report deals with the effectiveness of cacodylic acid (dimethylarsenic acid) as a silvicide for undesirable trees. Cacodylic acid has been used successfully as an herbicide for the destruction of grasses and weeds. Experimental work with this material was begun during the 1963 field season, and continued during 1964, to permit complete evaluation of the results. It appears that cacodylic acid has considerable potential as a silvicide.

Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides, Michx.), R.O. Strothmann
Aspen Bibliography
Quaking aspen in the most widely distributed tree species in North America (66, 78);2/ it has a transcontinental range which covers more than 110 degrees of longitude and 40 degrees of latitude. Other common names include quaking asp, aspen, golden aspen, mountain aspen, trembling aspen, Vancouver aspen, poplar, trembling poplar, and popple (44). The terms "quaking" and "trembling" come from the fact that the leaves tremble in the slightest breeze because the leaf petiole is flattened at right angles to the leaf blade. The term "golden" refers to the brilliant gold and yellow of the foliage in the autumn.
Preliminary Report On Selection And Breeding Of Honeybees For Alfalfa Pollen Collection, William P. Nye, O. Mackensen
Preliminary Report On Selection And Breeding Of Honeybees For Alfalfa Pollen Collection, William P. Nye, O. Mackensen
All PIRU Publications
Some colonies of honeybees on alfalfa collect a much higher percentage of alfalfa pollen than others. The possibility of genetic differences between colonies was investigated. Colonies collecting high and low percentages of alfalfa pollen were first selected. Daughters of queens from three 'high' and three 'low' colonies were inseminated from their brothers, and colonies headed by queens of these six lines were tested. Colonies headed by sister queens were more similar in the proportion of alfalfa pollen they collected than were those headed by unrelated queens. This suggests heritability of the factor studied. On the other hand no correlation was …
