The Secret Of Viral Reproduction, George W. Cochran May 1963

The Secret Of Viral Reproduction, George W. Cochran

Faculty Honor Lectures

Nucleic acid is the basis of life. There are 2 types, ribose nucleic acid (RNA) and deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA). DNA, the material found in the chromosomes within the nuclei of the cells of most living organisms, bears the genetic code that determines all of the characteristics of a living organism. Information from the DNA of the chromosomes is carried to all parts of the cell by one type of RNA called messenger RNA. Additional specialized RNA molecules are found inside the ribosomes, tiny bodies within the protoplasm that make proteins for the cell. Still other, smaller RNA molecules, called …

A Study Of The Effects Of Mastitic Milk On The Quality And Yield Of Cheese, Clayton Shirl Huber

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mastitis is found to some degree all over the world where cows are used for milk production. It could be classed as one of the most perplexing problems of milk production in the airy industry. The loss to the producer and the manufacturer is of considerable importance.

Today sub-clinical mastitis is probably the most common form. This type of infection is commonly so mild that it passes without recognition. It will be investigated in this study.

The influence of mastitis on milk composition has not been studied extensively. Very little research has been done on the influence of mastitic milk …

A Nutritional Survey Of Sweet Cherry Orchards In Utah, M. Dale Christensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The sweet cherry crop has always been the number one fruit crop in Utah until the last three or four years when it shifted to second place due to severe spring frosts. However, the outlook for its continued success is still very good. Even though there are drawbacks such as virus infestations, spring frosts, nutritional disorders, cracking, doubling, and bird injury, new plantings are being made each year in each of the important fruit producing counties. Utah is also important in the national production of sweet cherries and is presently sixth in the nation.

A nutritional survey of sweet cheries …

Factors Influencing The Quality And Palatability Of Venison In Utah, Flora H. Bardwell

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Outdoor recreational activities dealing with the pursuit of game is exceedingly popular today and its popularity is increasing each year. Annually over 180,000 hunters go afield in Utah in search of deer. There is harvested in the state over 12,000,000 pounds of dressed venison from Utah deer herds each fall. These hunters contribute 10.5 million dollars to the economy of the state for licenses, lodging, transportation and other expense of hunting.

Deer hunting is often done by the amateur, who with little or no experience has few or improper tools or information for dressing and caring for his game, and …

Effect Of Forage Height Upon The Microtemperature Of A Grass-Legume Pasture And A Comparison Of Forage Composition, Robert E. Warnick May 1963

Effect Of Forage Height Upon The Microtemperature Of A Grass-Legume Pasture And A Comparison Of Forage Composition, Robert E. Warnick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The use of pasture to provide low cost feed for dairy and other farm animals is an important factor in the success of livestock operations.

Some of the factors which influence the income from pasture land are: management, pasture mix, and climate. The management of a pasture can determine to a great extent the value of pasture in a farming enterprise. Irrigating the pasture at the right time, using the right fertilizer, and proper methods of harvesting are examples of some of the management problems facing the grassland farmer.

Thermal Degradation Of Pigments And Relative Biochemical Changes In Cherries And Apricots, K. B. Dalal May 1963

Thermal Degradation Of Pigments And Relative Biochemical Changes In Cherries And Apricots, K. B. Dalal

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The extent and nature of biochemical changes that take place in canned fruits during storage temperatures above freezing have been reviewed and discussed by Pederson, et al. (1947). These changes include loss in nutritive value, e.g. ascorbic acid, thiamine (Brenner, et al., 1948) and deterioration of color (Tressler, et al., 1955). Bauernfeind (1953) reported that canned peaches, apricots, and sweet cherries, after a few months of storage at 70°F, frequently undergo changes such as destruction of anthocyanin and carotenoid pigments with the subsequent formation of brown colored compounds. Darkening of fruit-color eventually results in their unacceptability at …

The Effects Of Cooking Temperature And Stage Of Doneness On Some Factors In Broiled Beef, Carmencita Salvosa May 1963

The Effects Of Cooking Temperature And Stage Of Doneness On Some Factors In Broiled Beef, Carmencita Salvosa

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Broiling is cooking tender cuts of meat by radiant heat from hot coals, a gas flame, or an electric element. Steaks and chops for broiling are from 1 to 2 inches thick.

Broiling as a method of cooking mat is not new, but the directions for the process are the result of individual trial and error testing and are often in conflict. Current interest in indoor and outdoor broiling, particularly in Western United States, emphasizes the need for better information. There is no measuring device for surface heat during broiling and thus little research on the relationship of surface temperature, …

A Study Of The Manufacture Of Frozen Desserts From Dry Ingredients, Shihadeh H. Dajani

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In many parts of the world where milk production is limited, there is an opportunity to process dairy foods from imported concentrated milk products. Dry ingredients can be shipped conveniently and some can be stored several months generally without deterioration. In these milk deficient areas, dried ingredients of good quality and with proper processing should increase the use and consumption of dairy products.

A large supply of high quality milk by-products which are fit for human consumption are available in the world today.

Many investigators and manufacturers have used dried milk by-products as a source of milk solids in frozen …

Effects Of Beaver On Stream Flow And Water Quality, James W. Bates May 1963

Effects Of Beaver On Stream Flow And Water Quality, James W. Bates

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water, one of the major resources of the western lands, controls the economy and expansion of the communities. Industry, agriculture, timber, livestock, game and home water needs are all dependent upon a steady and continued flow of water from wells, springs, and rivers. Water is derived from one source, precipitation, which occurs in the form of rain and snow. Watersheds which are properly managed accumulate a substantial snow pack during the winter which is the life-giving source of water for our springs.

The Utah Water and Power Report (1948) indicates the annual precipitation over the entire state of Utah averaged …

Farmers' Reactions Toward Upland Bird Hunting In Two Utah Counties, 1957, Frank J. Calkins May 1963

Farmers' Reactions Toward Upland Bird Hunting In Two Utah Counties, 1957, Frank J. Calkins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Proof that public hunting on private lands is a growing Utah problem is, perhaps, most easily found by driving down any country lane. “No Trespassing" signs come one to a fence post or so it must seem to the pheasant hunter. His quarry is the most popular of Utah's farm game species and, unfortunately, the most popular subject of farmer-sportsmen disputes.

Reasoning that short seasons reduce hunter nuisances and property damage, landowners have long advocated three- to five-day pheasant seasons. And because of this and a former game department concern about overshooting the birds (Utah Fish and Game Commission, 1946) …

Some Agronomic Aspects Of Seed Chalcid Bruchophagus Roddi Gussakovsii Resistance In Alfalfas, James H. Thomas May 1963

Some Agronomic Aspects Of Seed Chalcid Bruchophagus Roddi Gussakovsii Resistance In Alfalfas, James H. Thomas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Previous studies have indicated that certain alfalfa varieties and clones are more resistant than others to alfalfa seed chalcid damage. This resistance varies in all cases and data on infestations indicate that agronomic characteristics may be responsible for some of the apparent resistance. Since this is a major pest in alfalfa seed producing areas, and cultural and chemical controls have been essentially ineffective, it was decided to determine if resistance was associated with certain pod characteristics in order to find a partial solution to the problem.

The Nitrification Of Ammonium Sulfate In Polyethylene Bags In The Field And Laboratory, Carlos Dean Smith May 1963

The Nitrification Of Ammonium Sulfate In Polyethylene Bags In The Field And Laboratory, Carlos Dean Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There are many advantages and some disadvantages associated with the fall application of nitrogen fertilizers. The advantages of applying fertilizer at this time appear very convincing. It is easier to get onto the land in the fall. During the fall, farmers usually have more time to apply fertilizer than they do in the spring. In the fall the fertilizer companies offer better services. This is because the fall application of fertilizer lengthens out their season, thus making it possible for them to handle more fertilizer.

The main disadvantage is the fact that it is possible to lose the fall-applied nitrogen …

Nitrogen Effect On Cation Exchange Capacity Of Plant Roots, Kamilia Shoukry Mohamed Shoukry May 1963

Nitrogen Effect On Cation Exchange Capacity Of Plant Roots, Kamilia Shoukry Mohamed Shoukry

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The relationships that exist between soil and plant are very complicated and have aroused man's curiosity for centuries. Many studies have been done in order to understand and clarify this relation. Among these is the hypothesis that plant roots exhibit cation exchange capacity (CEC) and that this is in some way responsible for differential cation uptake . The CEC of the roots was defined by Helmy (l958a) as the total cations which can be exchanged or replaced from the root surface under a given set of conditions and is usually expressed as milli-equivalents per 100 grams (me/100 g) of dry …

The Effect Of Range Condition And Intensity Of Grazing Upon The Daily Intake And Nutritive Value Of The Diet Of Sheep On Summer Ranges Of Northern Utah, Merwyn Mortimer Kothmann May 1963

The Effect Of Range Condition And Intensity Of Grazing Upon The Daily Intake And Nutritive Value Of The Diet Of Sheep On Summer Ranges Of Northern Utah, Merwyn Mortimer Kothmann

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The mountainous ranges of the West are commonly used during the summer and have been used in this manner since the settlement of white men over a century ago. Many of these ranges have been mis-managed and are in poor condition. The productivity of these ranges greatly affects the economy of the nation; thus, if ranges in poor condition have a nutritive value lower than ranges in good condition, it results in an economic loss. little work has been done to determine the nutritive value of mountainous summer ranges in good condition compared to similar ranges in poor condition.

The Effect Of Urea, Ammonium Sulfate, And Organic Materials On Nitrite Accumulation And Gaseous Loss Of Nitrogen In Acid Soil, Siddangouda V. Patil May 1963

The Effect Of Urea, Ammonium Sulfate, And Organic Materials On Nitrite Accumulation And Gaseous Loss Of Nitrogen In Acid Soil, Siddangouda V. Patil

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nitrogen is one of the major elements essential for plant growth. It is the element most prone to depletion by cultivation and is usually found deficient in soils. In successful farming the problem of nitrogen supply is of special importance because plants need it in large amounts, it is fairly expensive to supply, and it is easily lost from the soil.

Abundance, Movements, Harvest, And Survival Of Brown Trout And Mountain Whitefish In A Section Of Logan River, Utah, David W. Bridges

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Comprehensive population studies in the field of fisheries are in great demand. Many of our fishable waters are being changed, and we need to be able to predict the results of these habitat alterations. We must know how to include beneficial modifications in readjustments of habitat in order to create a fishery or prevent destruction of an existing one.

The acceptable situations for good fish production in large mountain streams are not well-known. A fishery can be properly managed only if the manager has sufficient knowledge of the carrying capacity of the habitat, the survival and mortality of the population, …

Cost Of Raising Dairy Heifers In Northern Utah, Earnest M. Morrison, J'Wayne Mcarthur Jan 1963

Cost Of Raising Dairy Heifers In Northern Utah, Earnest M. Morrison, J'Wayne Mcarthur

Utah Resources Series

Dairymen have a continuing problem in maintaining herd size. Disease, injuries, and low production, make it necessary for them to cull animals from their herds. Replacements equal to a complete herd turnover are necessary every two to six years. Consequently, many are wondering as to the most profitable practice to supply the needed replacements in the herd. Three alternatives are available: Dairymen can produce herd replacements. They can purchase either heifers or cows. They can contract with growers specializing in raising heifers to provide replacements. Since all dairy enterprises differ to some degree, each dairyman should seek a specific solution …
