Bulletin No. 63 - Sugar Beets In Sanpete And Sevier Counties, Luther Foster
UAES Bulletins
The co-operative experiments in sugar beet culture for the past season were confined to the farmers of Sanpete and Sevier counties. They were carried on in conjunction with an organization formed by the citizens of the two counties and known as the Sanpete-Sevier Sugar Company. This association was organized at a delegate convention, held at Gunnison Feb. 17, 1899, which was composed of the representatives from all of the principal settlements in the two counties. Bishop Christian A. Madsen, the chief promoter of the movement was chosen president of the company, Mr. C. A. Short secretary, and Mr. Thomas Kearnes, …

A Generic Table Of The Family Panurgidae: A Reply To Mr. Cockerell's Critique On The Segregation Of Perdita Cockerell, William H. Ashmead

In Psyche for January 1899, Mr. Cockerell has made some criticisms on my segregation of the genus Perdita Cockerell, which seem to require a reply. Now, I think the whole trouble with Mr. Cockerell is expressed m his opening sentence: "I hardly know what to say about Mr. Ashmead's three new genera, established in Psyche pp. 284-285 at the expanse of Perdita"; and, had he waited a little longer and given himself more time to investigate the subject a little more thoroughly, I am convinced he would have been better able to have said something more to the point.

In the Journal of the New York Entomological Society, for March, 1 99, I separatesuperfamilies, . The first of these or the Apoidea comprise the bees, among which, especially among the social bees, are to be found probably the highest or most specialized type in the order; hence my rea on for beginning the classification of the Hymenoptera with these in insects. Our own bees, and indeed the bees of most countries, except those of the European fauna, are but little studied and very imperfectly known.

Bulletin No. 61 - Alfalfa Or Lucern: The Cutting Time. Its Feeding Value., Luther Foster, Lewis A. Merrill
UAES Bulletins
These experiments, as originally planed, had for their object the determination of the best time to cut alfalfa in order to secure the most profitable annual yield, its chemical composition, digestibility and the results of feeding trials being considered. A comparison of the yield and feeding value of the first, second and third crops was also made a part of the investigation, and as with the different cuttings, the composition and digestibility formed a part of the work. In conducting this experiment to determine the comparative feeding value of the various cuttings and of the different crops of alfalfa, some …
Super-Families In The Hymenoptera And Generic Synopses Of The Families Thynnidae, Myrmosidae And Mutillidae, William H. Ashmead
Super-Families In The Hymenoptera And Generic Synopses Of The Families Thynnidae, Myrmosidae And Mutillidae, William H. Ashmead

The three families, Thynnidre, Myrmosidre and Mutillidre have never been properly defined, or characterized, and their genera, at present, on account of the diversity between the sexes, and the diffi-culties attending their proper correlation, are in utter confusion, and often wrongly placed. This confusion is also due, to a certain extent, to a lack of sufficient study, and the careless and insufficient characterization of some of the species and genera by the original describers, so that until lately it has been impossible to bring them into anything like order.

Four New Species Belonging To The Genus Plenoculus Fox, William H. Ashmead

The genus Plenoculus Fox was erected in Psyche, Vol. VI, 1893, p. 554, with one species P. davisi. Since that time, however, four additional species have been described, three by Fox and one by myself. I have now the pleasure of presenting descriptions of four new species and giving a table for distinguishing all of the species, The genus is unknown outside of boreal North America.

Up to the present time but a single species is known in the genus Diploplectron Fox, the type D. (Liris) brunneipes Cresson. Recently, in arranging a large collection of Hymenoptera, presented to the United States National Museum by Professor Carl F. Bader, three additional species were recognized, which are described below.

The Honey Bee: A Manual Of Instruction In Apiculture, Frank Benton

The Honey Bee: A Manual of Instruction in A pi culture, by Mr. Frank Benton, who has been in charge of the apiarian work of this Division for several years. The constant demand for information concerning bee culture for a long time indicated a need for such a public manual, and the work was begun and nearly completed under the direction of my predecessor, Dr. C. V. Riley. The manuscript was submitted September 20, 1895, and the edition of 1,000 copies was soon exhausted. In April, 1806, Congress ordered a reprint of 20,000 copies, in which some corrections and additions …
