Does Weather Or Site Characteristics Influence The Ability Of Scavengers To Locate Food?, Rebekah E. Ruzicka, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Olfactory predators and scavengers rely on odors to locate food, and they forage primarily at night. We hypothesized that weather (e.g. wind speed, humidity, and temperature), vegetation, and landscape features affect the dissipation of odors in the atmosphere and, thus, impact the foraging efficiency of olfactory predators. We tested this hypothesis by assessing what conditions were correlated with the persistence of bait along the dike surrounding Willard Bay Reservoir, Utah. We distributed 124 chicken eggs and 199 dead European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) as bait over 21 separate occasions spanning from May 21, 2009, to August 18, 2009. We used timers …

Fine Roots Of Aspen Clones In High Salt And Petroleum Hydrocarbon Pollution, Kim Yrjälä, Ivika Ostonen, Shinjini Mukherjee, Timo Sipila, Lu-Min Vaario, Pertti Pulkkinen

Aspen Bibliography

The quality of polluted soil can much be improved and the environmental risks reduced by use of phytoremediation. Harmful hydrocarbon compounds can be degraded through the activity of plant and its associated microbes. We previously showed that PAHs increase aromatic ring-cleavage gene diversity in rhizosphere of birch (Sipilä et al. 2008, Yrjälä et al. 2010a) and the rhizosphere of aspen harbors Burkholderia bacteria able to degrade aromatics (Yrjälä et al. 2010b). The results are promising for successful remediation of polluted soils with woody plants. The aim of our studies is to elucidate the response of the plant and the associated …

Getting Chemicals Into Trees Without Spraying, Michael R. Kuhns Dec 2011

Getting Chemicals Into Trees Without Spraying, Michael R. Kuhns

All Current Publications

Chemicals are applied to trees for many reasons. Insecticides repel or kill damaging insects, fungicides treat or prevent fungal diseases, nutrients and plant growth regulators affect growth, and herbicides kill trees or prevent sprouting after tree removal. Spraying is the most typical way to apply these chemicals. It is fast, uses readily available equipment, and is understood. The down side of spraying is that much of the chemical being applied is wasted, either to drift, run off, or because it can not be applied precisely to where it is needed in the tree. Also, in many cases the chemical is …

Linking Fruit Traits To Variation In Predispersal Vertebrate Seed Predation, Insect Seed Predation, And Pathogen Attack, Noelle G. Beckman, Helene C. Muller-Landau

Biology Faculty Publications

The importance of vertebrates, invertebrates, and pathogens for plant communities has long been recognized, but their absolute and relative importance in early recruitment of multiple coexisting tropical plant species has not been quantified. Further, little is known about the relationship of fruit traits to seed mortality due to natural enemies in tropical plants. To investigate the influences of vertebrates, invertebrates, and pathogens on reproduction of seven canopy plant species varying in fruit traits, we quantified reductions in fruit development and seed germination due to vertebrates, invertebrates, and fungal pathogens through experimental removal of these enemies using canopy exclosures, insecticide, and …

Western Tentiform Leafminer Phyllonorycter Elmaella, Diane G. Alston, Michael E. Reding

All Current Publications

Western tentiform leafminer populations can vary tremendously between years or even between generations within a single year. A large population in Utah's commercial fruit districts hasn't been observed since the early 2000s. Increasing resistance to organophosphate insecticides and variable effectiveness of at least six parasitic wasp species that attack the leafminer can influence the population size.

Loss-Of-Function Of Constitutive Expresser Of Pathogenesis Related Genes5 Affects Potassium Homeostasis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Monica Borghi, Ana Rus, David E. Salt Oct 2011

Loss-Of-Function Of Constitutive Expresser Of Pathogenesis Related Genes5 Affects Potassium Homeostasis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Monica Borghi, Ana Rus, David E. Salt

Biology Faculty Publications

Here, we demonstrate that the reduction in leaf K+ observed in a mutant previously identified in an ionomic screen of fast neutron mutagenized Arabidopsis thaliana is caused by a loss-of-function allele of CPR5, which we name cpr5-3. This observation establishes low leaf K+ as a new phenotype for loss-of-function alleles of CPR5. We investigate the factors affecting this low leaf K+ in cpr5 using double mutants defective in salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) signalling, and by gene expression analysis of various channels and transporters. Reciprocal grafting between cpr5 and Col-0 was used to determine the relative importance of …

Winter Squash, Brianne Sherwood Sep 2011

Winter Squash, Brianne Sherwood

USU Student Organic Farm Newsletter

Winter squash is one of the most fun vegetables of the season because there are so many shapes and sizes! Butternut is probably the most popular winter squash and is a very delicious one, but there are so many more. Hubbard, Buttercup, Sqaghetti, Delicata, and Banana squash are a few to try this season. Winter squash is named as such because it keeps over the winter months, not because it becomes ripe in winter (even though summer squash becomes ripe in summer).

Microhabitat Selection For Nesting And Brood-Rearing By The Greater Sage-Grouse In Xeric Big Sagebrush, Christopher P. Kirol, Jeffrey L. Beck, Jonathan B. Dinkins, Michael R. Conover Sep 2011

Microhabitat Selection For Nesting And Brood-Rearing By The Greater Sage-Grouse In Xeric Big Sagebrush, Christopher P. Kirol, Jeffrey L. Beck, Jonathan B. Dinkins, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Understanding selection of breeding habitat is critical to conserving and restoring habitats for the Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus), particularly in xeric landscapes (≤25 cm annual precipitation). We monitored radio-marked female sage-grouse in south-central Wyoming in 2008 and 2009 to assess microhabitat use during nesting and brood rearing. For each model we grouped variables into three hypothesis sets on the basis of the weight of support from previous research (a priori information). We used binary logistic regression to compare habitat used by grouse to that at random locations and used an information-theoretic approach to identify the best-supported models. Selection of microhabitat …

Corn, Brianne Sherwood, Amanda Hawks Sep 2011

Corn, Brianne Sherwood, Amanda Hawks

USU Student Organic Farm Newsletter

We have so much corn right now it's coming out of our ears (great pun, right?). And it's SO incredibly cheap! This is probably because the US produces 42% of the world's corn! Most of it is used for animal feed, but other uses include exporting to other countries, human food, seed, and industrial uses such as ethanol production. Because there is so much corn available here in the U.S. You can find it in a lot more foods than you think. It's in peanut butter, snack foods, soft drinks, multivitamins, ketchup, mustard, ground beef, and frozen yogurt just to …
