The objective of the present study is then limited to investigate the parasitic fauna of marine fishes from Ensenada, Baja California, and to compile in a single manuscript all data (Host-Parasite list, Parasite-Host list, and distribution of parasites) on digenea previously reported from the Mexican Pacific and the Gulf of California.

Breeding Behavior Of Captive Emperor Penguins (Aptenodytes Forsteri), Mary Elizabeth Kiel Jan 1983

Breeding Behavior Of Captive Emperor Penguins (Aptenodytes Forsteri), Mary Elizabeth Kiel

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Breeding behavior of captive Emperor Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) was observed at Sea World, San Diego, California during July, August, and September 1980, and April 1981. Emphasis was on displays, courtship, egg-laying, incubation, and care of chicks.

I observed the trumpet display most often between birds of opposite sexes and I interpret it as a signal of sexual identity. I interpreted the sideways stare display as a signal of sexual identity important in pair bond maintenance. Three head movements studied shared several functions including comfort behavior and reduction of intraspecific aggression. My observations confirmed that the display walk occurs in Emperors …

Enteric Infections In Stockton, California : With Special Reference To The Genus Campylobacter, Tom Edward Hathorn

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the last two or three years, the three largest hospitals in Stockton (St. Joseph’s, Dameron and San Joaquin General Hospitals) have modified their procedures to include the search for Campylobacter. On the other hand, the incidence of Yersinia in California is unknown, as most clinical laboratories do not specifically culture for it. There have been only a few reports of Yersinia in this state (personal communication of Dennis Ferrero, Director of the San Joaquin County Public Health Laboratory). This study has a threefold purpose: to investigate the incidences of Campylobacter and Yersinia, especially in relation to the incidence of …

A Comparative Study Of The Allium Obtusum Comples, William R. Mortola Jan 1983

A Comparative Study Of The Allium Obtusum Comples, William R. Mortola

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The taxa of the Allium obtusum complex were examined morphologically, chromosomally, and with the use of the scanning electron microscope, Additional field studies included ultraviolet photography, caging experiments, and collection of insect visitors.

Based on the cumulative information gathered during this investigation, of the 7 taxa previously proposed in this complex, 4 are considered to be valid: A. cratericola, A. obtusum, A. tribracteatum, and A. yosemitense, A new variety of A. obtusum, var, robustum is described.

The base chromosome number among all members of the complex is seven, All species are diploid (2n=14), except for one population of A. cratericola …
