The Influence Of Fire And Site Factors On Vegetation Pattern And Process: A Case Study Of The Western Portion Of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Mark Edward Harmon Dec 1980

The Influence Of Fire And Site Factors On Vegetation Pattern And Process: A Case Study Of The Western Portion Of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Mark Edward Harmon

Masters Theses

Fire history, the initial effect of fire disturbance on community structure, the response of communities one and two years after fire disturbance, and the present-day vegetation patter were examined in the westernmost portion of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee and North Carolina.

Sectioning of fire scars, field observations, historical accounts, and fire control records indicated that the fire disturbance regime has changed dramatically during the last 200 years. Man-caused fires have probably been an important disturbance since Indians migrated into the area over 12 thousand years ago. Between 1790 and 1940, Euro-American man frequently burned the landscape. …

Folate Status In Adolescent Girls, Hugh Wyatt Dawson Aug 1980

Folate Status In Adolescent Girls, Hugh Wyatt Dawson

Masters Theses

This nutrition status survey was conducted at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville in conjunction with a southern regional nutrition project operative in ten sites throughout the southeast. The purpose of this study was to assess folate nutriture of the subjects using both biochemical and dietary indicators. The sample group was comprised of 94 adolescent females 14 ± 0.5 years of age, from two race groups (black and white) and two income categories (≤ $1,200/capita/year and ≥ $2,000/capita/year). Fasting blood was collected and analyzed by radio assay methods for both serum and red cell folate concentrations. Two 24-hour dietary recalls were …

Density And Distribution Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) In Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, Michael Joseph Kiningham

Masters Theses

Three census techniques were used from June 1978 to August 1979 to estimate population densities of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee. Roadside counts were conducted 3 times a week; once at dawn, dusk, and dark. Drive counts were made every 3 months and a 3-week sampling interval was used to make pellet counts. Seasonal density estimates ranged from: 0.29 to 0.58 deer/ha (dark counts) , 0.29 to 0.76 deer/ha (drive counts) , and 0.18 to 0.47 deer/ha (pellet counts).

Adult sex ratios obtained from dawn and dark counts made during …

The Development And Evaluation Of A Nutrition Education Program For Kindergarten, Mild, And Moderately Retarded Children At The University Of Tennessee Child Development Center, Virginia Stewart Johnson

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop nutrition education material to be used in teaching normal kindergarten, and elementary educable, and trainable mentally retarded children of the same mental age. This study proposed to show that mentally retarded children can make significant improvement in their knowledge of nutrition when taught using appropriate nutrition education methods and materials. Due to Public Law 94-142, mentally retarded children are being mainstreamed into the regular classrooms where nutrition education programs are being conducted as a result of The Child Nutrition Act. However, little information has been made available concerning methods and guidelines to …
